Yes—an outdated graphics driver can be one possible cause of a VALORANT startup problem, and Riot includes updating it as a troubleshooting step for system or critical errors. It is not a guaranteed fix. First check the exact error: if it contains “VAN,” use Riot’s Vanguard error-code guidance rather than treating it as a graphics-driver problem.
Check the error before updating a driver
Write down the full message or code shown when VALORANT fails to start. Riot directs errors containing “VAN” to its Vanguard error-code guidance. A VAN error should not automatically be diagnosed as a graphics issue.
For other system or critical launch errors, Riot’s startup troubleshooting guide lists a graphics-driver update among several possible steps. It also covers clearing local game data, performing a clean boot, checking firewall exceptions, and, if earlier steps do not resolve the problem, reinstalling VALORANT and Vanguard.
Update the driver from the GPU manufacturer
- Identify your graphics hardware. Find the GPU brand and model installed in your PC, and note which operating system you use.
- Go to the GPU manufacturer’s official channel. Choose a driver that matches both your exact graphics hardware and operating system. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions; the steps and available options can vary by product.
- Install the matching driver and restart the PC. Then try launching VALORANT again.
- If the error remains, follow the Riot path for that error. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling drivers without a reason. Give Riot Support the exact message or code if the listed troubleshooting steps do not help.
Prefer the GPU or device manufacturer’s official driver source over an unverified third-party driver utility. The important checks are an exact hardware match, operating-system compatibility, and instructions from the manufacturer.

When a driver update is not the answer
A launch failure can have causes beyond graphics drivers. If updating does not resolve a general system or critical error, use Riot’s troubleshooting guide to work through its other listed options. If the message contains “VAN,” start with Riot’s Vanguard guidance instead. Match your next step to the displayed error rather than assuming every startup problem has the same cause.
What Riot’s patch 10.05 notice said
Riot’s notice about launch problems after patch 10.05 advised players to restart the PC first and said a clean graphics-driver reinstall might help if restarting did not. That was guidance for the patch 10.05 issue, not evidence that the same issue or recommendation applies to current launch problems.
