If Vivaldi Sync is not connecting or your data is missing on another device, check Vivaldi’s service status, sign out and back in, and make sure you are using the right password for each step. If the initial sync is still running, give it time. Do not reset Sync encryption or clear remote data until you have verified that the data you need is available on a device or can be recovered with a saved backup key.
Start with the safest connection checks
- Check Vivaldi’s Status page. Look for a reported Sync incident at Vivaldi Status. If there is a relevant service issue, local troubleshooting may not resolve it.
- Sign out of Sync and sign back in. On desktop, open Settings > Sync, log out, then log in again and select Start Sync if prompted. Restart Vivaldi first if you need to. On mobile, open the Vivaldi menu and go to Settings > Sync. Vivaldi says logging out and back in often helps with connection problems. See its Sync troubleshooting guide.
- Allow a large first sync to finish. Vivaldi says changes may be reflected within a minute, but that does not mean a large profile’s initial sync will finish that quickly. A delay during the first transfer alone does not prove Sync has failed.
Use the right password for each step
Vivaldi Sync uses two distinct credentials. Your Vivaldi account login password authenticates your account. Your Sync encryption password encrypts data sent from a device and decrypts data received on another. Changing the account login password does not automatically change the encryption password, even if you originally set them to the same value.
Vivaldi requires an encryption password of at least 12 characters. If account login succeeds but Sync will not unlock, check the encryption password rather than repeatedly changing the account password. Confirm the data should sync to that device
Vivaldi’s documented Sync categories differ by platform. Desktop lists bookmarks and Speed Dials, some settings, stored passwords, autofill, history, extensions, web apps, reading list, open tabs, and notes (partially, without attachments). Android lists bookmarks and Speed Dials, settings, passwords, autofill, history, extensions, reading list, open tabs, and notes. iOS lists bookmarks and Speed Dials, settings, passwords, autofill, open tabs, history, reading list, and notes. A category appearing on one platform’s list does not establish that every platform syncs it in the same way.

Find tabs synced from another device
- Desktop: Look for Synced Tabs in the Tab Button menu or the Windows and Tabs Panel.
- Android: Open the Tab Switcher and use its Synced Tabs pane.
- Send Tab to Device on Android: Receiving a tab notification depends on Vivaldi having notification permission in Android settings.
Understand the consequences before resetting Sync
If you forgot the encryption password, first look for a saved backup encryption key. If you have neither the password nor a usable key, Vivaldi’s reset flow clears remote Sync data and uploads data again from the device used to perform the reset. That means the resetting device’s local data becomes critical: information that exists only on the server may be lost if it cannot be decrypted with a backup key.
Before proceeding, check that the device you plan to use still has every item you need, or that the backup key can recover the encrypted data. Vivaldi explicitly warns that Sync is not intended to be a guaranteed backup service. Its troubleshooting guide and platform Sync guides describe the recovery options.

Choose a recovery route based on what you still have

When to report a persistent connection failure
If Sync has not connected for more than six hours and Vivaldi’s Status page has no relevant update, Vivaldi asks users to submit a bug report. Include the account username, displayed error, time the problem occurred, steps to reproduce it, and a screenshot of vivaldi://sync-internals and vivaldi://settings/sync/.
