Bring the goalie equipment you know fits, and confirm with the team’s equipment staff what it expects you to bring and what it will provide. A practical ready-to-go set includes leg pads, goalie pants, chest and arm protection, blocker, catching glove, mask, skates and stick, plus base layers and personal fit items. This is a preparation checklist—not an official NHL packing list.
What to have ready
Pack familiar, properly fitted equipment rather than assuming a team can replace or adjust unfamiliar gear at short notice. Check each item against current league rules and the club’s instructions.
- Leg pads and goalie pants
- Chest and arm protector
- Blocker and catching glove
- Approved mask
- Goalie skates and stick
- Jock or jill and base layers compatible with the team’s uniform
- Neck and throat protection, as appropriate to current rules and team policy
- Spare laces, tape and personal fit items
The NHL sources cited here do not publish a full call-up packing list or establish which of these items a team supplies. Ask the club directly rather than treating this list as a league mandate.

Why personal fit matters
Leg pads
NHL Rule 11 treats leg-pad sizing as individual, not interchangeable by nominal size alone. The NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules, Rule 11.2, says pads must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. It sets an 11-inch maximum extreme width and gives the League discretion over maximum height based on individual measurements. These are 2025–26 rule details; check the current-season rulebook for any changes before relying on dimensions.

Chest and arm protection
NHL.com’s report on the NHL and NHLPA’s 2018 chest-and-arm-pad rule says the protector must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. Kay Whitmore, NHL vice president of hockey operations, described the design principle: “The whole thing was, try to make equipment that mimics the shape of the body it’s protecting … [while] never reducing protection.” The practical implication is to bring protection that fits your body and is acceptable to the team, not simply gear marked with a matching size.
Confirm the team’s call-up arrangements
Contact the equipment staff as soon as the call comes. Confirm what gear must arrive with you, what the club can provide, any approval requirements and any current rule or team-policy details that affect your setup. The league sources cited here do not say whether a team supplies a recalled goalie with a mask, pads or other personal equipment.

NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026, that every team is required to have an emergency backup goalie on its roster for the 2026–27 season. That goalie dresses with the team, wears No. 00, and practices and travels with it. The report describes eligibility limits: no NHL game under a standard player contract, no more than 80 professional games, and no professional hockey in the previous three seasons. Those details concern rostered emergency backups; they should not be assumed to apply to every injured-player recall or contracted NHL goalie.
A 2020 NHL report described an emergency backup as eligible to play for either team and said a called EBUG signed an amateur tryout contract before going on the ice. That is historical context, not current contract guidance. Follow the club’s instructions for your situation.
