XRP Ledger lending generally refers to the proposed XLS-66 Lending Protocol: a design for fixed-term, uncollateralized loans funded through pooled assets in a Single Asset Vault (XLS-65). The ledger can record protocol operations, but a loan broker—not the ledger—assesses borrowers and handles key credit-risk work. Depositing into such a vault would not mean earning guaranteed interest or having an automatically collateralized loan.

As of October 4, 2026, the XRP Ledger Standards page lists XLS-66 as Draft. The official material reviewed does not establish a live provider or a currently available vault offer, so verify the amendment’s present status and any service’s terms before considering it.

What XRP Ledger lending means

“XRP Ledger lending” in this context means the proposed XLS-66 protocol, not a verified retail product or a general promise that XRP holders can deposit XRP and earn a return. The protocol is designed to support fixed-term loans using assets pooled in a Single Asset Vault, specified separately in XLS-65. A vault holds one asset type; a Loan Broker manages the lending protocol and its associated vault. In the described design, the vault owner and Loan Broker must be the same account.

The protocol standardizes certain on-ledger loan and vault operations after the loan terms have been set. It does not independently determine that a borrower is trustworthy, guarantee repayment, or make all assets deposited in a vault immediately available for withdrawal.

How the proposed protocol is intended to work

Assets are pooled in a Single Asset Vault

A vault gathers deposits of a single asset. Those assets can be used to fund loans under the configured terms. The nature of the asset matters: native XRP and issued assets do not necessarily have the same issuer-related controls.

A broker handles credit assessment

The Loan Broker is responsible for off-chain underwriting and risk management, including assessing borrower creditworthiness. The XRP Ledger Standards specification says the design “relies on off-chain underwriting and risk management to assess the creditworthiness of the borrowers.” The ledger’s record of protocol activity does not itself validate that assessment or show that a broker’s servicing and recovery processes are effective.

Loans have terms and repayment schedules

The design describes loans with fixed terms, interest terms, and configured repayment schedules. A depositor should therefore distinguish the loan’s schedule from their own need to access funds: the protocol design does not establish that deposits can be withdrawn on demand or that withdrawals will coincide with borrower payments.

First-loss capital may absorb part of a default loss

A broker may fund an optional first-loss capital arrangement. Under the specification, some of that capital can be partially liquidated after a loan default and returned to the vault to cover some loss. This protection is limited by whether it is enabled, how much is actually funded, and the applicable default and loss-allocation rules. It is not insurance or a repayment guarantee.

Current status and what is not established

As of October 4, 2026, the XRP Ledger Standards entry for XLS-66 identifies it as an Amendment in Draft status, with a creation date of October 18, 2024, and an update date of September 15, 2026. Check that official status again before relying on it: a draft specification is not proof that an amendment is active on XRPL mainnet.

Ripple Open Source documentation includes XLS-66 material and V1.1 resources, including a security audit, security update, and performance testing. Those resources can inform an implementation review, but their existence does not establish that every risk has been eliminated or that a production lending service is available. A reference application for XLS-65/66 is likewise evidence of a software implementation, not proof of mainnet activation or a user-facing offer.

The official XRPL Permissioned Domains documentation says, “Currently, there are no available XRP Ledger features that use permissioned domains.” It lists Single Asset Vault and Lending Protocol among amendments in development that may use them. Credential-based access restrictions can help limit who interacts with a service; they do not establish borrower credit quality or guarantee legal compliance in every jurisdiction.

Risks users should understand

Borrower default and underwriting risk

The described loans are uncollateralized, and the protocol does not supply on-chain collateral and liquidation management. Repayment and recovery therefore depend substantially on borrower performance and the broker’s off-chain underwriting, servicing, and recovery processes. Ask how borrowers are assessed, what loan and performance information is disclosed, how a default is defined, and what recovery rights apply.

Limited loss protection

First-loss capital is optional and finite. If a vault uses it, determine whether it is actually funded, how much is available relative to the loans, which defaults qualify, and the order in which losses are allocated. A stated buffer does not by itself show how much a depositor might recover.

Broker and operational dependence

The broker manages the loan protocol and vault and performs key off-chain functions. Weak underwriting or servicing, operational failure, conflicts of interest, or inadequate disclosure can affect depositors even if the ledger records transactions correctly. Review who controls the broker account and vault, how the broker reports loan status, and what happens if the broker cannot continue operating.

Asset issuer and control risk

The specification discusses issuer controls, including freeze and deep-freeze behavior for certain pseudo-accounts, and notes that an issuer may claw back funds from a lending-associated vault in the documented design. Check the specific asset’s issuer permissions and the service’s disclosures; do not assume that an issued token has the same control profile as native XRP.

Maturity and liquidity risk

Fixed-term loans and scheduled repayments can create a mismatch between the time borrowers repay and the time depositors need their funds. Before depositing, inspect the particular vault’s withdrawal, redemption, and closure terms, including any limits or conditions. Do not infer immediate liquidity from the fact that activity is recorded on-ledger.

Protocol and implementation risk

XLS-66 is a changing proposal that depends on amendments and software implementations. Specification changes, bugs, or differences between a reference application and a production service can affect how a service works. Read current official protocol documentation and relevant security disclosures, and verify whether the implementation you are considering matches the claimed design.

Access control is not credit protection

A permissioned domain can restrict access based on credentials if used, but gating participation does not reduce the risk that an admitted borrower will default. Nor does credential access alone establish that a service meets legal requirements for a user’s location.

How to assess a vault or broker offer

If a provider presents an offer, evaluate the actual service rather than relying on a general description of XLS-66. The official protocol material allows for configurable terms, but the sources cited here do not identify a verified live provider to compare or rank.

Quick Recap

  • Status: Confirm the amendment and the provider’s implementation are active in production; distinguish a proposal, demo, or reference application from a functioning service.
  • Asset: Identify the deposited asset and issuer, then review relevant issuer controls and any clawback or freeze disclosures.
  • Broker and loans: Identify the broker, its underwriting approach, the loan information it reports, and its servicing and recovery processes.
  • Security and loss allocation: Review available audit and security disclosures. If first-loss capital is offered, check its funded amount, coverage conditions, and loss waterfall.
  • Terms and access: Read the interest and repayment terms, fees, withdrawal and closure limits, credential requirements, and jurisdictional and legal documents.
