At every stop, reassess the light instead of carrying yesterday’s—or even the previous scene’s—camera settings forward. Check the sun’s direction and height, cloud cover, subject placement, and the contrast between bright and dark areas. Then choose a position or timing for the look you want, adjust exposure, and review the histogram.

What to check when the light changes

Natural light changes with the sun’s position, weather, and the direction you point the camera. A roadside view can look entirely different after a short drive or a change in shooting angle. Before taking the shot, consider:

  • Direction: Is the light falling on the front of the subject, coming from the side, or behind it?
  • Height: Is the sun high overhead or low enough to cast long shadows?
  • Quality: Is the light direct and contrasty, or softened by cloud cover?
  • Contrast: Are important parts of the scene much brighter or darker than others?
  • Subject and frame: Can you reposition yourself or the subject to get the light and composition you want?

As the Fujifilm X Series & GFX Learning Centre puts it, “Rather, natural light photography is more a case of making the best of what’s available.” The practical approach is to respond to the light in front of you, rather than rely on one setting for a time of day.

Adjust your approach to the conditions

Hard midday sun

Direct overhead sunlight can create strong contrast, with bright highlights and deep shadows; it can also be unflattering on faces. Decide which tonal detail matters most before adjusting exposure. If preserving bright areas is the priority, watch for highlight clipping and use exposure compensation to correct automatic exposure when needed.

K&F CONCEPT 82mm Variable ND2-400 Lens Filter (1-9 Stops) for Camera Lens
  • 【Import Optical Glass】Crafted from premium AGC optical glass with 8 multi-layer coatings, this ND filter reduces reflections and glare, ensuring superior image quality.
  • 【Versatile Light Control】With 1 to 9 stops of adjustable light reduction and 360-degree rotation for precise dimming settings, this filter is perfect for diverse scenarios. (Note: Max stops may cause a cross-pattern effect, commonly known as an "X black cross." This phenomenon is natural and temporary, occurring due to the adjustable ND filter's interaction with specific lenses and focal lengths.
  • 【Glare-Free Surface】Treated with an oxidized sandblasting process, this filter prevents unwanted stray light and minimizes unnecessary reflections on the metal surface.
  • 【Slim and Secure】At a mere 7.4mm thickness, the CNC-patterned design ensures enhanced friction while rotating, making it easy to attach/detach lenses and accessories anytime, anywhere.
  • 【Compatibility Note】This ND filter suits all 82mm lenses. Check your camera's lens thread size (usually beside a "ø" diameter symbol) before ordering. Additionally, a 86mm lens cap is required for this 82mm variable ND filter.

For portraits, look for shade or change your angle when practical. Backlighting is another option, though it can introduce lens flare. The right choice depends on the subject and the look you want, not on a universal midday setting.

Low sun at sunrise or sunset

Low-angle light is more horizontal, warm, and directional, and it creates longer shadows. Use its direction to shape a landscape or subject: side light can emphasize texture, while backlighting can make a subject stand out against the brighter background.

Do not treat “golden hour” as a fixed recipe. The light’s effect depends on the scene, your shooting direction, and where the subject sits in the frame. Recheck composition and exposure at each stop.

Blue hour and falling light

As available light declines, check exposure again and make a deliberate trade-off among aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The choice depends on whether the subject is moving and whether camera movement is acceptable. A faster shutter may help freeze motion; a slower one may suit a still scene if the camera can remain steady. There is no single setting that works for every subject or camera.

Overcast conditions

Cloud cover reduces direct sunlight and increases the role of diffuse skylight, changing both contrast and apparent color. Reassess exposure and color rather than assuming settings from clear sun will still suit the scene. Look at the image and its histogram before moving on.

Review exposure instead of guessing

The camera histogram is a useful check on how tones are distributed. A spike clipped against the right edge can indicate lost highlight detail, but no one histogram shape is correct for every subject or lighting situation. Interpret it alongside the scene and the image you intend to make.

When a graduated ND filter can help

For a landscape with a bright sky and a darker foreground, a graduated neutral-density (ND) filter can darken the sky relative to the land. It is most suitable when the scene’s horizon and tonal division fit the filter’s transition. If that boundary cuts across a subject or an irregular skyline, the filter may affect parts of the scene you want to keep bright.

  • 【Imported AGC Optical Glass】Made by importing AGC optical glass, 28 multi-layer coating waterproof, scratch-resistant and ensures high definition image quality.
  • 【Without Partial Yellow】Our all-new titanium coating technology, bid farewell to the common problem of partial yellow and color shift with our true color variable ND filter. Enjoy the true colors of your images and videos like never before.
  • 【Note】This filter is compatible with all 67mm lenses. Please verify your camera's lens thread size before ordering. The number beside a "ø" (diameter) symbol. Additionally, a 72mm lens cap is required for this 67mm variable ND filter.

A graduated ND filter is an optional tool, not a requirement for every trip or lighting change. Consider the scene’s geometry, whether a stationary subject could be photographed with exposure bracketing, how much highlight detail you need to protect, and how much editing you plan to do. RAW flexibility and a filter can both help in suitable situations, but neither is best for every scene.
