If a table header does not line up with the body, first check whether the rows represent the same number of logical columns. Count each cell’s colspan as multiple columns and account for rowspan; if those counts and the table’s declared column groups are consistent, investigate the rendered layout and CSS instead. Without the markup and styles, it is not possible to identify a particular cause.

Check whether the mismatch is structural or visual

“Width” can mean either the number of columns represented by the table structure or the visible width and alignment of the header. Start by simplifying the example to one <table> containing its <thead>, <tbody>, and any <colgroup>. Temporarily remove unrelated CSS if you can. This makes it easier to tell a column-count problem from a presentation problem.

For each row, add the logical columns represented by its cells. A cell without a colspan represents one column; a cell with colspan="3" represents three. In a multi-row header, also account for cells extended into other rows by rowspan. The HTML Standard defines these spans and says, “These attributes must not be used to overlap cells.” WHATWG HTML Standard: attributes common to td and th elements.

Make the header and body represent the same columns

Compare every header row with the body rows it labels. A grouped heading is not an extra column: it spans the columns beneath it. Encode that intent with colspan rather than adding an empty or misleading header cell. Check that the combined declared span of any column groups matches the table’s total columns, as described in the W3C WAI tutorial for tables with irregular headers.

Simple, one-row header

For a straightforward table, use one column header for each logical column and mark it with scope="col":

<table>
  <thead>
    <tr>
      <th scope="col">Name</th>
      <th scope="col">Role</th>
      <th scope="col">Location</th>
    </tr>
  </thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td>Ari</td>
      <td>Editor</td>
      <td>Remote</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

Grouped or multi-level header

If one heading genuinely labels several columns, give it a span equal to the number of columns in that group. For irregular, multi-level headers, use column groups where appropriate and mark the group header with scope="colgroup"; mark its leaf headers with scope="col". WAI’s irregular-header example demonstrates this approach.

Verify header semantics, not just appearance

Use <th> for actual header cells and <td> for data cells. A table that looks aligned can still lack clear associations between headings and data. For ordinary column headers, scope="col" can identify the relationship. In more complex tables, use explicit header IDs and headers references where needed. See the W3C WAI tables tutorial and MDN’s table accessibility guide.

If the counts match, inspect the rendered layout

When the logical structure checks out, look at the computed widths and table layout in the browser’s developer tools. Confirm that the header and body are parts of the same table; separate tables can render with different column widths even when their contents appear related. Inspect the CSS affecting the table, rows, and cells, then compare the rendered header and body. The query alone does not establish which styling rule, if any, is responsible, so there is no universal CSS change to prescribe without the actual markup and styles.
