The key difference is not just a new set of endpoints: Azure Maps changes authentication options, operational tools, and transaction-based billing. Bing Maps for Enterprise is already retired for free Basic accounts; Microsoft says Enterprise customers can continue using it through June 30, 2028, so they should plan a tested migration before that date.
What is the difference between Azure Maps and Bing Maps?
Both platforms cover common developer needs such as maps, geocoding, place search, routing, traffic, and time zones. Microsoft’s migration overview maps many Bing Maps features to Azure Maps equivalents, but describes migration targets—not a guarantee that API contracts, data shapes, or application behavior are identical. The overview was last updated May 17, 2024. Microsoft’s migration overview is a starting point; check the service-specific guide for each feature you use.
| Area | Bing Maps for Enterprise | Azure Maps |
|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Basic accounts retired; Enterprise use permitted through June 30, 2028 | Microsoft’s documented migration destination |
| Core developer services | Web map controls, REST services, Spatial Data Services, and mobile SDKs | Web Map Control and REST services for maps, search, routes, traffic, time zones, weather, and geolocation |
| Authentication | API key | Shared Key, Microsoft Entra ID, or Shared Access Signature (SAS) token options |
| Operations | Bing Maps Account Center for key and usage management | Azure portal tools for access, CORS, usage reporting, budget alerts, and health or support resources |
| Billing | Separate Bing licensing and transaction rules | Usage-based, pay-as-you-go monthly billing, with a monthly free allowance and service-specific transaction units |
| Migration approach | Existing APIs and SDKs | Corresponding Azure APIs and SDKs, with service-specific migration guides |
The lifecycle date is from Microsoft’s Bing Maps developer guidance, last updated May 22, 2024. Microsoft’s current notice says Bing Maps for Enterprise has been deprecated and retired for all free Basic account customers.
Which Bing Maps features have Azure Maps equivalents?
Microsoft’s overview pairs familiar Bing Maps features with Azure Maps services. Use the mapping to identify candidate replacements, then verify the specific guide for the API or SDK in your application.

The overview links separate migration guides for imagery, locations, routes, Spatial Data Services, time zones, traffic, and the Web SDK. A listed equivalent identifies a service to investigate; it does not establish drop-in compatibility.
How do authentication and operations change?
Bing Maps for Enterprise uses API key authentication. Azure Maps offers Shared Key, Microsoft Entra ID, and SAS token options. That gives teams more than one way to handle access, including identity-based authentication, but the appropriate choice depends on the application’s security and deployment needs.

Operations move as well as code. Bing Maps key and usage management is associated with the Bing Maps Account Center; Azure Maps work is managed through the Azure portal, including authentication and access, CORS, usage reporting, budget alerts, and health or support resources. Include these changes in ownership, deployment, and monitoring plans.
How does Azure Maps billing work?
Microsoft describes Azure Maps as transaction-based, pay-as-you-go, billed monthly, and available without an annual commitment; a free monthly allowance is also available. The unit counted depends on the service. A request, query, or matrix cell should not automatically be treated as one transaction.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Base map, imagery, traffic, and weather tile requests: one transaction per 15 tile requests.
- Route Matrix: one transaction for every four matrix cells, rounded up.
- Batch Search and Batch Route: each query or calculation in the batch counts individually.
- Search Geocode Autocomplete: one transaction per 10 autocomplete requests.
These transaction rules and free allowances are listed on Microsoft’s Azure Maps pricing page. Its Gen2 pricing table recommends Gen2 for new and existing customers and, in the pricing snapshot reviewed, lists free monthly allowances including 5,000 for base map tiles, search, and routing-related meter entries as specified in that table, and 1,000 for imagery tiles. The exact meter entries and prices depend on the live table. Microsoft says displayed prices are estimates and may vary by agreement, purchase date, and currency; check the page for current terms and the relevant geography before estimating a workload.
For a sound comparison, translate your actual application traffic into Azure’s service-specific meters before comparing costs. The pricing page’s transaction examples show why two implementations that appear similar to users may consume transactions differently.

How should developers plan a migration?
Treat this as a service-by-service migration rather than an endpoint swap. Microsoft’s overview supports the mapping and migration approach below; the listed test cases are practical checks for an application, not a claim about a prescribed Microsoft test plan.
- Inventory the existing implementation. List every Bing Maps for Enterprise REST API and SDK in use, including less-visible imagery or Spatial Data Services calls.
- Map each dependency. Match every call to a candidate Azure Maps API or SDK and flag features where data shape or behavior may require code changes. Use the relevant service-specific migration guide.
- Recalculate usage. Estimate traffic using Azure’s service-specific transaction rules and the current pricing for your geography and agreement.
- Set up Azure access. Create the required Azure subscription and Maps account, then choose an authentication approach suited to the application.
- Port the implementation. Make code changes using Microsoft’s REST and Web SDK migration guidance as applicable.
- Validate before deployment. Test representative locations, routes, traffic, map rendering, authentication, errors, and expected transaction volume with realistic application traffic.
For Enterprise customers, the June 30, 2028 end date makes migration planning time-sensitive. Start with an inventory and a small representative workload so feature, authentication, and billing differences surface before a production cutover.
