Yes, some router firmware vulnerabilities can let an attacker run commands as root—but root access is not the automatic result of every flaw, and vulnerability records apply to specific models and firmware versions. Check your router’s exact model and hardware revision, install updates only through its manufacturer or ISP, and replace it if security updates are no longer available.

How a router flaw can become root access

Router firmware is the software that runs the device’s administration tools, network services, and configuration functions. A flaw in one of those components may let an attacker bypass an access check, use credentials embedded in the firmware, or inject commands into a process.

The outcome depends partly on the privileges of the vulnerable process. If it runs as root—the highest-privilege account on many router operating systems—commands it executes may also have root-level control. A flaw that does not reach a privileged process may have a narrower impact. The exploit path and consequences depend on the specific vulnerability, the router’s exposure, and the network design.

A compromised router can affect more than its own settings: it sits between connected devices and other networks, carrying their traffic. NIST identifies router cybersecurity as important to network integrity and availability. NIST’s September 2024 publication page for IR 8425A and its full report describe security outcomes for consumer-grade routers.

What documented vulnerabilities show—and what they do not

Public vulnerability records show that root-level router compromise is technically possible through more than one mechanism. They do not show that every router is affected or that any particular vulnerability is currently being exploited.

Product or record Reported issue Version detail in the record
KAON CG3000T and CG3000TC, CVE-2025-7072 NVD says clear-text hard-coded credentials shared across units of the affected model could be used by an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute commands with root privileges. The record lists fixed firmware 1.00.27 for CG3000T and 1.00.67 for CG3000TC. Confirm the applicable hardware revision and firmware with the vendor or ISP.
Certain ASUS routers, CVE-2026-13313 NVD describes an active debug code issue: a remote authenticated user could send a crafted HTTP request to bypass protections, enable Telnet, and execute commands with root privileges. The NVD record does not provide enough affected-version detail to responsibly list models or fixed versions here. Consult the linked ASUS security advisory from the record.
MSI Radix AXE6600, CVE-2026-71984 NVD describes command injection in the urlfilter function, allowing remote attackers to execute commands and obtain root privileges. The record identifies firmware v781521. Check vendor guidance before drawing conclusions about other versions.

These examples apply to the named products and versions in their records; they are not evidence that other router models share the same flaw.

How to reduce the risk

1. Identify your exact router and check for firmware updates

  1. Find the router’s manufacturer, model, and hardware revision on its label or in its administration interface. ISP-supplied equipment may use provider-specific firmware.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and revision, or follow your ISP’s support instructions. Use the router’s administration interface to check for updates if its official documentation recommends that route.
  3. Install an applicable update using the official instructions. Do not install firmware from unofficial mirrors. NIST recommends authenticated, authorized update mechanisms and signed software updates; its IR 8425A report also calls for keeping firmware current and preventing rollback to versions with known vulnerabilities.

2. Protect administration access

Change factory administrator credentials to a strong, unique password. Factory credentials are widely known, as noted in US-CERT’s 2011 Small Office/Home Office Router Security guidance. A password change helps protect the administration interface; it cannot fix a vulnerability that allows unauthenticated access or otherwise bypasses authentication.

Limit router configuration access to authorized users and necessary interfaces. Disable remote administration, Telnet, or other exposed services if you do not need them, following the device’s official documentation. NIST recommends access controls for router interfaces and permitting only those needed for router operation.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

3. Decide what to do with an unsupported router

If the manufacturer or ISP no longer supplies security updates, replacing the router with a supported device may be the practical option. CISA recommends upgrading unsupported network devices in its 2025 guidance on compromising networks worldwide. An old router is not necessarily compromised simply because of its age; the key issue is whether security fixes are available for its software.

When comparing replacements, check whether security updates are still supplied, how they are delivered, how clearly the support period and end-of-support notices are stated, and whether the device is compatible with your ISP and modem. Also check whether its administration features let you disable unnecessary remote access and protect access with strong credentials. No specific replacement model is established here as secure or compatible with your service.

4. Review settings and signs of unexpected change

Where the router provides them, check logs and configuration for unfamiliar administrator accounts, changed DNS or port-forwarding settings, unexpected remote access, and unexplained reboots. NIST identifies login attempts, administrative events, system status, and firewall status as useful cybersecurity information; CISA also recommends reviewing router logs and configuration for unusual activity.

5. If you suspect compromise, follow provider or vendor recovery guidance

Contact the ISP or manufacturer if you cannot determine the safe recovery process for your model. A factory reset may remove unauthorized configuration, but it does not repair a firmware flaw. Recovery should include installing a supported, fixed firmware version where available and changing credentials from a trusted device. Use the model-specific instructions from the vendor or ISP rather than assuming a reset alone is sufficient.
