In outdoor 11-a-side field hockey, the four basic position groups are goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards. Each has a primary job, but players move out of their usual areas as possession changes: defenders can support attacks, midfielders help at both ends, and forwards can track back. A formation describes a team’s intended shape, not fixed player locations.

What are the four main field hockey positions?

The role descriptions below apply to outdoor 11-a-side hockey. The USA Field Hockey beginner guide describes the customary responsibilities; a Michigan High School Athletic Association positioning guide provides a complementary overview and formation example.

Position Usual responsibility Contribution in attack Contribution in defense
Goalkeeper Protect the goal and coordinate the defense in front of it. Supports the team from the goal area; the cited introductory guide does not detail specific ball-playing techniques. Works to prevent opponents from scoring.
Defenders (backs) Protect the goalkeeper and prevent opposing forwards reaching scoring positions. Help advance possession toward midfielders and forwards; defenders can also join attacks. Guard space nearer their own goal and help stop attacks.
Midfielders (middies) Link the defensive and attacking lines. Carry or move the ball forward and connect possession to the forwards. Act as an initial line of defense and help win or retain possession.
Forwards (attackers or strikers) Advance play toward the opponent’s goal and turn chances into goals. Lead attacks and try to finish opportunities created with teammates. Can retreat to help defend when play requires it.

What does each position do?

Goalkeeper

The goalkeeper’s central task is to stop opponents scoring and organize the defense around the goal. This is a specialized defensive role; do not assume that a goalkeeper’s job or way of playing the ball is identical to a soccer keeper’s. The introductory role source does not provide technical coaching instructions or a detailed equipment standard.

Defenders (backs)

Defenders protect the goalkeeper by disrupting attacks before opponents can reach dangerous scoring positions. They also help move the ball out of defense and toward the midfield and forward lines. Their job is not simply to remain beside the goal: a defender may support an attack when the team has possession.

Midfielders (middies)

Midfielders contribute in both phases of play. Without the ball, they help form an initial defensive line; with it, they connect the defense to the attackers and help progress possession upfield. Their linking responsibility is why a midfielder may be involved in defending, carrying the ball forward and supporting a scoring opportunity during the same passage of play.

Forwards (attackers or strikers)

Forwards are the most attack-oriented line. They work toward the opposing goal and try to convert chances created with teammates. Their primary role does not keep them permanently in attack: when possession turns over, forwards can track back and help the team defend.

What is a sweeper or cover player?

Some team shapes include a sweeper or cover player, whose main responsibility is defensive. Depending on the arrangement, this player may cover space in front of or behind the defensive line. A sweeper is an optional tactical role, not a required fifth position group; the cited sources do not establish that every modern team uses one.

How do formations work?

A formation is a coach’s arrangement of role groups, chosen in part around the players available and the opponent. USA Field Hockey lists 4-3-3, 3-4-3 and 3-3-3-1 (with a defensive sweeper) as examples; the MHSAA guide also illustrates 3-3-3-1. These are examples, not mandatory or universal shapes. The numbers describe an arrangement, not a rule that players must stay in fixed lanes.

To follow a formation, look for the team’s broad lines and the responsibilities players are taking on, rather than expecting every player to occupy one spot throughout the match. The most useful questions are: who is protecting the goal, who is helping connect possession through midfield, and who is trying to create or finish chances?

Why do players move out of position?

Field hockey positions describe primary responsibilities, not permanent locations. When a team wins the ball, defenders may advance to support possession, midfielders help carry play forward, and forwards work toward scoring chances. When the team loses it, midfielders help defend, forwards can retreat, and defenders focus on protecting the goal. Communication and teamwork help the group adjust as the ball changes hands.

Does this apply to every kind of hockey?

No. This guide covers outdoor 11-a-side hockey. The International Hockey Federation lists indoor hockey, Hockey5s, beach hockey and para hockey as distinct formats, each with its own rules. The FIH’s official documents page states that the outdoor Rules of Hockey were published and took effect in March 2026. Formation examples here are coaching conventions, not rules from that publication. Terminology may also vary by region; the sources establish common role groups, not a complete map of regional names.
