To make your first open-source contribution on GitHub, choose a project you care about, read its contribution guide, and take on a small, clearly defined task. Work on a branch (and fork the repository if you cannot push to it), follow the project’s checks, then open a pull request and respond to review. Labels such as good first issue and help wanted can help you find candidate work, but they do not guarantee that an issue is available or that a contribution will be accepted.
Choose a project that welcomes contributions
Start with software, documentation, or a community project you already use or want to support. A project is a stronger first choice when it has a license, clear contributor instructions, recent activity, and maintainers who respond to issues and review proposed changes. GitHub’s Open Source Guides offers advice on finding projects and evaluating whether they are active and welcoming.
To discover possible tasks, search for issues labeled good first issue or help wanted, or check the repository’s /contribute page. GitHub describes good first issue as a label indicating that an issue is beginner-friendly in its May 11, 2026 beginner guide. Treat either label as a starting point, not a promise: read the issue and check whether the work is still open before volunteering.
Compare candidate projects
- Relevance: You will be more motivated if the project solves a problem you care about.
- Openness: Look for a license and a clear
CONTRIBUTINGguide or equivalent instructions. - Activity: Check recent commits, issues, and pull requests rather than relying on popularity alone.
- Responsiveness: See whether maintainers answer questions and review contributions constructively.
- Scope: Choose an issue that fits your current skills and the time you can commit.
GitHub’s beginner guide also mentions at least 100 stars as one suggested screening characteristic. That is an editorial rule of thumb, not a measured threshold or a requirement for a worthwhile project.

Read the project instructions before starting
Read the repository’s README and contribution guide, then review the full issue discussion. Check whether another contributor has claimed the task, whether maintainers have clarified the expected outcome, and whether the problem has already been fixed. The repository’s own instructions govern that project; GitHub’s general workflow is a useful starting point, not a universal set of rules.
Follow any project-specific requirements for coding style, tests, documentation, commit messages, and pull-request templates. If an issue is ambiguous, unlabelled, or likely to involve a substantial change, ask maintainers whether they want the contribution before investing in implementation. GitHub specifically recommends checking with maintainers when it is unclear whether an issue without a beginner or help-wanted label is a good fit.

Pick a small, useful change
A focused documentation improvement, broken-link fix, typo correction, or clearly described small bug is often a good first task. GitHub Docs says that “starting with minor fixes like documentation improvements or small bug reports can help you familiarize yourself with the codebase and contributor workflow” in “Contributing to open source.”
Prefer a change that addresses a project need over one that only reflects personal preference. If you need clarification, explain what you checked and ask a specific question. A short, contextual question is easier for maintainers to answer than a broad request for direction.

Make the change on a branch or fork
A branch keeps your proposed work separate from the project’s default branch. A fork is your own copy of a repository, which you need when you do not have permission to push a branch to the original project. GitHub’s general steps for contributing to open source cover forking, branching, committing, and opening a pull request.
- Fork if needed. If you lack write access, create a fork of the project and work from that copy. If you have permission to work in the original repository, follow its instructions on where to create your branch.
- Create a topic branch. Give it a descriptive name so the change stays separate from the default branch.
- Edit and check your work. Work locally or directly on GitHub when suitable. Run the tests and checks the project requires, and report only checks you actually ran.
- Commit related changes together. Keep the work focused and use a clear commit message. GitHub’s example guidance suggests a commit title under 50 characters and description lines under 72 characters; those are recommendations in its example, not universal Git rules. Follow the repository’s own standards first.
If you want a deeper introduction to Git, the Pro Git book is available online; its second edition was published in 2014, so it is a reference for Git concepts rather than a guide to every current GitHub screen.

Open a pull request to the original project
A pull request (PR) proposes your changes so project maintainers can review them. Push your branch, then create a PR with the original project as the base and your branch as the compare branch. GitHub’s pull-request quickstart describes the web workflow as well as an alternative command-line path.
- Review the diff and confirm it contains only the intended change.
- Write a concise title and explain what changed and why.
- Link the related issue when relevant. GitHub’s example uses wording such as
Closes: #15; use the project’s preferred format. - Use a draft PR if the work is not ready for final review but early discussion would be useful.
Some repositories use templates or additional checks, so complete the fields and steps they require.

Respond to maintainer feedback
Review is part of contributing, not a sign that the work has failed. Answer questions, make requested updates in the existing PR, and keep the conversation professional. GitHub advises against force-pushing after review has started because it can make it harder for maintainers to see how you addressed feedback. Acceptance and review timing depend on the project and its maintainers; no label or workflow guarantees a merge.
