Skyrim’s August 20, 2026 update is free, but Bethesda does not describe it as a new DLC or story expansion. It mainly increases console storage for mods and Creations, improves the Creations menu and Creation Kit, and includes fixes. The free additions that more closely resemble new gameplay—Fishing, Survival Mode and Saints & Seducers—were announced for Skyrim Special Edition’s tenth anniversary in 2021, not in 2026.
What the August 2026 Skyrim update adds
Bethesda Game Studios’ August 20, 2026 update notes describe changes to storage, the Creations interface and creator tools, rather than a new questline or expansion.
More space for console mods

Creations menu and Creation Kit changes
The update also adjusts how Creations are grouped in the menu, adds a “Most Popular” sorting option, changes the display of favorited works in progress, and updates some Creation Kit functions. Bethesda additionally corrected an issue that could place free creations from Verified Creators in the wrong store category.
Additional fixes
A further section of Bethesda’s notes, dated August 27, lists two crash fixes and a fix for a storage-display problem. These are maintenance changes, not an announcement of new narrative content.

Why “Creations” does not mean every item is free
Bethesda uses the Creations menu to bring together existing mods, Creation Club items and newer community creations. Availability can differ by game, platform and region. Some Verified Creators can set prices for creations they sell and receive royalties; the category therefore includes paid as well as free content. See Bethesda’s Creations overview for its explanation of the system.
The August fix for the category placement of free Verified Creator content confirms that free items exist in the store. It does not identify a newly released creation as a free DLC, and the update notes do not announce a new free quest or expansion.

The free gameplay additions people may be remembering are from 2021
For Skyrim Special Edition’s tenth anniversary, Bethesda announced three free Creation Club additions for owners of the game: Fishing, Survival Mode and the Saints & Seducers quests. Parker Wilhelm, Bethesda’s Content Manager, described the offer in the 2021 anniversary announcement. That is a genuine earlier example of free content adding gameplay, but it is separate from the August 2026 update.

How Anniversary Edition differs from the free update
Skyrim Anniversary Edition and the Anniversary Upgrade are separate offerings from the August 2026 game update. The Xbox product listing says the upgrade includes Creation Club content released through November 11, 2021, and requires Skyrim Special Edition; check the Xbox Anniversary Upgrade listing for platform-specific details.

Bethesda’s December 2025 announcement of Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 describes a bundle with the base game, Dawnguard, Dragonborn and Hearthfire, plus hundreds of Creation Club items. At announcement, Bethesda listed U.S. prices of $59.99 for the complete edition and $19.99 for an upgrade from the Switch version, and noted a physical code-in-box release. Those are dated Switch 2 offer details, not a purchase requirement for the free 2026 update; consult Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement for the offer context.

What to expect on your platform
- If you already own Skyrim Special Edition on a supported platform, the August update is a game update, not an Anniversary Upgrade purchase.
- On PS5 or Xbox, the headline storage change is a 15 GB mod allocation. On PS4, Bethesda describes roughly 16 GB for Creations but warns that actual usable space can be constrained by how the console allocates storage.
- To find additional free Creations, browse the in-game Creations menu and check the item’s price and platform availability. Do not assume every Creation is free or available in every region.
- If you are looking for fresh story content specifically, the August 2026 notes do not announce a new free DLC. The named free gameplay additions in Bethesda’s anniversary announcement are from 2021.
