SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launched the classified NROL-97 mission for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) from Kennedy Space Center on October 1, 2026, at 11:54 p.m. EDT (October 2 at 03:54 UTC). The Space Force described the Eastern Range mission as headed to a “Higher Energy” orbit, but the exact orbit and payload details have not been publicly identified.
When and where did NROL-97 launch?
Falcon Heavy lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 11:54 p.m. EDT on October 1, 2026—03:54 UTC on October 2. Space.com reported the successful launch and booster outcomes on October 2, 2026. Read Space.com’s launch report; SpaceX’s NROL-97 mission page identified the launch site.
What is known about NROL-97’s orbit?
The U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command assigned NROL-97 as an Eastern Range mission to a “Higher Energy” orbit. That wording is the public description—not a specific orbit designation. SpaceX did not publish the target orbit, and Space.com reported that it was not disclosed. The reviewed public sources do not establish NROL-97’s orbit type, altitude, or inclination. See the Space Force mission-assignment document.
What remains classified?
NROL-97 is an NRO mission, and its payload is classified. Public sources do not identify the spacecraft’s design or mission function, so descriptions of it as a particular kind of satellite or intelligence system would be speculation. Space.com reported that the launch webcast ended at the NRO’s request shortly after the side boosters landed.

This was Falcon Heavy’s first mission for the NRO, according to Space.com. The Space Force mission-assignment announcement identifies NROL-97 as an NRO partner mission assigned to SpaceX.
What happened to Falcon Heavy’s boosters?
The two side boosters landed at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station a little under eight minutes after liftoff. Space.com reported that they were on their second and fourth flights, respectively. The center core was not recovered.

How does Falcon Heavy reach higher-energy orbits?
Falcon Heavy is a two-stage, heavy-lift launch vehicle powered by liquid oxygen (LOX) and RP-1, according to SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide, dated May 9, 2025. Its first stage combines three Falcon 9 first stages: a center core and two side boosters. SpaceX states that the 27 first-stage engines produce 22,819 kN (5,130,000 lbf) of sea-level liftoff thrust. This is the vehicle’s stated specification, not a measurement of the NROL-97 flight.
SpaceX’s guide lists general Falcon Heavy services from the Eastern Range that include low Earth orbit (LEO), geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), direct geosynchronous orbit, and Earth-escape trajectories. These published capabilities provide context for the rocket’s range of possible mission profiles; they do not reveal NROL-97’s destination. The Space Force’s “Higher Energy” description should not be converted into a claim that the satellite went to GEO, GTO, or any particular altitude.
