MediaGoblin is free software for running your own media-publishing website. It supports multiple kinds of media and can give you direct control over your site and its storage—but it is not yet a fully federated network. Its stable documentation says that full federation is not supported, although media uploads work.
What is MediaGoblin?
GNU MediaGoblin is a platform for publishing and sharing photos, video and other media. The project presents it as a decentralized alternative to services such as Flickr, YouTube and SoundCloud: instead of relying on one central service, an operator can run an independent MediaGoblin site. Does MediaGoblin support federation?
Not fully. The stable documentation states that “full federation is not supported at the moment, but media uploading works!” MediaGoblin stable documentation You can run a site and let users upload media, but the available documentation does not describe a completed system for connecting independent instances into a federated network. What can you do with MediaGoblin?
- Publish different media types: The documentation covers photos, video and other media.
- Customize the site: MediaGoblin documents support for plugins and theming.
- Manage uploads: Command-line and batch uploading tools are documented alongside administration features.
- Build on its interfaces: The documentation includes a Pump API.
These are capabilities of a self-hosted publishing platform, not evidence that MediaGoblin currently replaces every feature of a large commercial service. Its suitability depends on the media formats and workflows you need, as well as your willingness to operate the site.

Can MediaGoblin replace YouTube or Flickr?
It can provide a place to host and share media under your own administration, but it is not a drop-in replacement for the reach or finished federation of major hosted platforms. With MediaGoblin, you control the instance; you also take responsibility for maintaining it. The project documents multiple media types and extension options, while explicitly noting that full federation remains unsupported.
How do you install MediaGoblin?
The official deployment guide recommends GNU/Linux, Python virtual environments (virtualenv) and Nginx. Its listed core dependencies include Python 3.7 or later, Git, SQLite or PostgreSQL, Pillow and Node.js. Installation is therefore a server-administration task, not simply creating an account on a hosted service. The operator must maintain the Linux system and the supporting web server, database and processing queue, as well as apply upgrades. Consult the deployment guide for the instructions and configuration applicable to your environment.

Is MediaGoblin still maintained, and what is the latest version?
The latest release identified by the project is MediaGoblin 0.15.0, announced on February 26, 2026. The project says this patch release fixes installation issues on Debian Trixie and Bookworm. It reports testing on Debian 12, Debian 13, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 43, and says support for Debian 11 and Ubuntu 20.04 has been dropped. MediaGoblin 0.15.0 release announcement
A current release and its platform-specific fixes are evidence of project activity; they do not establish a particular release schedule or support guarantee for future versions. Check the project’s release information before choosing an operating system for a new installation.

Who should consider MediaGoblin?
- It may suit you if you want to administer your own media-publishing site, value control over hosting and storage, and are comfortable maintaining a Linux server.
- It may not suit you if you need a finished federated network, a managed service that requires no server administration, or a platform whose audience and performance are established by published usage statistics. The project’s canonical sources do not provide authoritative user-count, adoption, revenue or performance figures.
