OpenAI president Greg Brockman reportedly decided not to give the remaining $25 million of a personal $50 million commitment to the AI-focused super PAC Leading the Future (LTF). Semafor reported the decision on October 2, 2026, citing employee objections and Brockman’s own concerns; OpenAI did not comment to Semafor, and no on-record statement from Brockman independently confirms the withdrawal.

What did Greg Brockman reportedly decide?

Semafor reported on October 2, 2026, that Brockman abandoned the second half of a $50 million commitment he and his wife, Anna, had made to Leading the Future. The report says $25 million had already been donated, leaving a reported $25 million balance that Brockman would not contribute.

The distinction matters: this is a reported decision about the remaining portion of a personal pledge, not a report that OpenAI withdrew corporate money. The sources available for this account do not include an on-record statement from Brockman confirming the decision or a filing establishing whether the remaining pledge was legally binding.

Why did he reportedly pull back?

Semafor attributed the decision in part to employee objections and Brockman’s concerns about LTF’s tactics and its effect on OpenAI’s reputation. The outlet reported that, in an employee Slack thread, Brockman apologized for the way the group reflected on the company. A source familiar with the situation told Semafor that staff pushback contributed to the decision and that Brockman had qualms after LTF targeted New York Assemblymember Alex Bores; the source also said he had expected more support for allied candidates.

Those explanations are attributed to Semafor’s reporting and its source, rather than established public statements from Brockman. Gizmodo, recounting a New York Times account of the Slack message, reported that Brockman wrote, “I feel terrible about the fact that LTF keeps reflecting on the company and become so much of a distraction for people here,” and, “We’ve donated $25m so far, and have no plans to donate more at this time.”

Did OpenAI fund Leading the Future?

OpenAI says it did not make super PAC donations and characterizes Greg and Anna Brockman’s involvement with LTF as personal. In a June 1, 2026 statement, the company said: “We have not made donations to any super PACs, and we do not have an employee-funded PAC.” It also said it does not direct LTF or have visibility into its operations. These are OpenAI’s statements about its relationship with the group, not independent verification of the group’s finances.

OpenAI also stated: “No outside political group speaks for OpenAI or represents our company’s views.” The reported change to the Brockmans’ personal commitment therefore should not be described as an OpenAI corporate contribution being stopped.

What is Leading the Future trying to do?

Axios reported in January 2026 that LTF and its network supported candidates who favor a national AI policy framework and opposed a patchwork of state regulation. Those are the group’s stated aims as described by Axios. The policy dispute is about whether AI rules should be primarily national or whether states should set their own requirements; it is distinct from the criticism of particular campaign tactics and targets described in Semafor’s account.

Axios reported, citing a news release shared with the outlet, that LTF had raised more than $125 million and held more than $70 million in cash as of its January 2026 report. Those are dated figures, not current totals. The reported decision by Brockman does not establish that LTF stopped operating or that every person associated with OpenAI ended involvement with the group.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain?

  • Reported: Semafor says Brockman abandoned the remaining portion of the personal $50 million commitment after $25 million had been donated.
  • OpenAI’s public position: The company says it made no super PAC donations and describes the Brockmans’ support as personal.
  • Not independently established here: Brockman has not provided an on-record confirmation in the sources cited, and no cited filing establishes the legal status of the remaining pledge.
  • Not current: LTF’s fundraising and cash figures cited by Axios are from January 2026; no later total is established here.
