For a home electronics lab, “a rack of all trades” most naturally means a compact 10-inch equipment rack: a smaller alternative to the familiar 19-inch rack that can organize networking gear, mini PCs, storage, power equipment and Raspberry Pi systems. The phrase is ambiguous, though—it is also the tagline for JACK, a tool-free front bicycle rack. This guide explains the mini-rack idea and clarifies the bicycle product.
What is a 10-inch mini rack?
A 10-inch mini rack is a compact enclosure for mounting or organizing compatible electronics. It can be more practical in a home lab than a full-size 19-inch rack, which may take up too much room or cost more than a small setup warrants. Hackster.io’s article on Jeff Geerling’s Project Mini Rack describes the 10-inch format as more appropriate for home use: Project Mini Rack.
The “10-inch” label describes the rack’s nominal equipment-mounting width, not the enclosure’s complete outside width. Before choosing equipment, check its mounting standard and the rack’s usable depth and height; a device that is physically small may still lack compatible mounting points.

These categories describe possibilities, not a promise that every listed device fits every 10-inch rack. Confirm dimensions, mounting compatibility, ventilation and cable access for the specific rack and equipment you plan to use.
How to choose and plan a mini rack
- List the equipment first. Note each device’s dimensions, mounting requirements, power needs and the space its cables require. This prevents choosing an enclosure around an assumed standard that your hardware does not meet.
- Check width, depth and usable height. Compare the rack’s mounting standard and interior dimensions with your devices, shelves and panels. Also account for clearance behind equipment so connectors and cables can be reached.
- Plan power and airflow. Decide whether the setup needs a PDU, a UPS or both. Check ventilation and how heat can escape; a compact enclosure should not obstruct equipment cooling.
- Include storage and cable management. If you need a disk shelf, confirm its fit separately. Plan cable routes and access so power and network connections remain manageable.
- Verify the complete arrangement. Check that equipment, shelves, power hardware and panels work together in the enclosure before buying. Noise may also matter if the rack will sit in a living or working space.
For a Raspberry Pi build, a rack-mount panel can provide an organized way to install boards, while a shelf may suit hardware that does not attach directly to the rack. The right choice depends on the rack’s mounting standard and the panel or shelf’s compatibility.

Is “A Rack of All Trades” about a bicycle rack?
Yes. WholeGrain Cycles uses “The rack of all trades” as a tagline for JACK, a universal front bicycle rack. Its descriptions say JACK attaches to common handlebar diameters with woven straps and a tool-free system. The manufacturer and retailer descriptions state a 5 kg load rating; that is a product rating, not an independent test result. “Universal” should not be taken to mean guaranteed compatibility with every bicycle. Check whether the strap attachment suits your handlebar and bike, whether your bags can be secured, and whether the stated load rating meets your needs before purchasing.
