Intel announced the XMM 6255 in 2014 as an embedded 3G HSPA modem platform for compact connected products, including IoT, machine-to-machine equipment and wearables. Intel specified a 7.2 Mbps downlink, 5.7 Mbps uplink and an effective board area of approximately 300 mm². The later “world’s smallest standalone 3G modem” description applies to the XMM 6255M, introduced in 2016—not the original XMM 6255.

What is the Intel XMM 6255 modem?

The XMM 6255 is cellular modem silicon intended for integration into products rather than use as a consumer USB dongle or standalone hotspot. Intel lists its launch as Q3 2014. The platform combines an Intel X-GOLD 625 baseband with integrated power management and a SMARTi UE2p RF transceiver. Intel described the SMARTi UE2p as the first transceiver with a fully integrated 3G power amplifier.

Intel’s design description includes protection controls for the transceiver and power amplifier against overheating, voltage peaks and overcurrent. Those are manufacturer-supplied design features, not independent reliability or performance test results.

How small is the Intel XMM 6255?

Intel’s 2014 product brief gives the original XMM 6255 an effective board area of approximately 300 mm². That figure describes the modem board footprint, not the size of the RF chip package.

  • Our 4G router/modem only support valid universal SIM cards. For some locked SIM cards, contract SIM cards which operators don't allow to use on WiFi routers, or only allow to use on their authorized devices, This product might not work. (IF your SIM card can not access to the Internet, usually you change another operator's universal SIM card, then it will work.) The router will automatically recognize most SIM cards and APN. If not, users should fill in APN information manually.

Intel separately lists the SMARTi UE2p transceiver package at 5.0 × 5.4 mm. A package measurement should not be presented as the complete modem’s board area: the baseband, power-management circuitry, memory, antenna connections and other implementation requirements also occupy space in a finished design.

What speeds and radio features does the XMM 6255 support?

Feature Intel’s stated specification
Downlink HSPA, up to 7.2 Mbps
Uplink HSUPA, up to 5.7 Mbps
HSPA coverage Dual-band HSPA
GPRS option Optional quad-band GPRS, requiring an external power amplifier
Process technology 40 nm
Baseband Intel X-GOLD 625
RF transceiver Intel SMARTi UE2p, with integrated 3G power amplifier

The 7.2 Mbps and 5.7 Mbps figures are peak capabilities in Intel’s specification. They are not a guarantee of throughput on a particular carrier network, in a particular country or inside a finished product. Real performance depends on network technology, spectrum, signal conditions, antenna design, software and network congestion.

Why the XMM 6255 was aimed at IoT and M2M designs

The platform’s value was its integration and small implementation footprint. Combining the baseband, power-management functions and a transceiver with an integrated 3G power amplifier can simplify a compact cellular design compared with using separate RF power-amplifier components.

That approach suited products that needed wide-area 3G connectivity but had little board space, such as asset trackers, industrial monitors, telemetry equipment, wearables and other machine-to-machine devices. A finished product still needs a suitable antenna, SIM or SIM interface, host processor connections, firmware, regulatory approvals and a carrier-compatible band configuration.

XMM 6255 versus XMM 6255M: the “world’s smallest” distinction

Model Generation and evidence Size or integration statement How to interpret it
XMM 6255 Original platform, launched Q3 2014 Approximately 300 mm² effective board area; SMARTi UE2p package 5.0 × 5.4 mm Intel’s product and brief figures for the original design
XMM 6255M Later product, documented by Intel in 2016 Intel said it was nearly 20% smaller than its predecessor Intel also called this model the “world’s smallest standalone 3G modem”; the statement is a vendor claim, not an independently verified industry ranking

Intel attributed the XMM 6255M’s reduced footprint to a system-in-package design that combines baseband and memory dies. Do not transfer the nearly-20%-smaller figure or the “world’s smallest” label to the original XMM 6255.

Is the XMM 6255 still available?

Intel’s current catalog labels the XMM 6255 as Launched. That lifecycle label does not establish that Intel still manufactures the part, that distributors have stock, or that a complete module can be purchased today. Intel also warns that product-lifecycle and availability information can change.

A Japanese technology report dated August 28, 2014 described a u-blox SARA-U2 module as available through an online shop at that time. That is historical distribution evidence, not confirmation of present inventory or worldwide availability.

What the announcement means for a modern design

The XMM 6255 remains historically notable for fitting a complete 3G modem platform into a compact embedded design. Its headline specifications are 7.2 Mbps HSPA downlink, 5.7 Mbps HSUPA uplink, dual-band HSPA and an approximately 300 mm² board implementation according to Intel.

For a new product, however, the important question is not only physical size. 3G network shutdowns, regional band requirements, certification, supply continuity and module-level integration can determine whether an XMM 6255-based design is practical. Treat Intel’s dimensions and speed figures as historical product specifications, and treat the XMM 6255M superlative as a claim specific to that later model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Intel XMM 6255 a consumer modem that plugs into a computer?

No. It is embedded modem silicon intended for integration into products such as IoT and machine-to-machine equipment. A finished design needs additional host, antenna, SIM, power and certification work.

Does “world’s smallest 3G modem” describe the XMM 6255?

No. Intel used that wording for the later XMM 6255M in a 2016 release. Intel’s statement is a vendor claim, and the evidence does not independently verify an industry-wide ranking.
