A neon light bulb produces light by sending a controlled electric current through low-pressure gas sealed between two metal electrodes. The electric field accelerates electrons; collisions excite and ionize gas atoms, creating a glow-discharge plasma. As excited atoms return to lower energy states, they emit visible photons. Genuine neon produces an orange-red glow, while many products sold as “neon” use other gases, phosphors, colored glass, or LEDs.
First, identify which “neon bulb” you mean
The term covers two very different gas-discharge devices. A miniature indicator lamp, such as an NE-2-style bulb, is a small glass envelope used in equipment and panel indicators. A traditional neon sign is a long, shaped glass tube with an electrode at each end. Both use low-pressure gas, but their power supplies and hazards differ greatly.
| Device | Construction | Typical power system | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miniature neon indicator | Small glass bulb, two electrodes, low-pressure gas | Series resistor; some complete indicators include a limiter | Power or status indication |
| Traditional sign tube | Shaped glass tube, sealed electrodes, selected gas or gas mixture | High-voltage, current-limited transformer or electronic ballast | Signs and decorative lettering |
| LED “neon” or neon flex | LEDs inside a silicone or plastic diffuser | Low-voltage LED driver | Decorative lighting that imitates neon |
A neon lamp is not an incandescent bulb with a hidden filament. It is a cold-cathode gas-discharge lamp.

What is inside a neon lamp?
- A glass envelope or tube that holds the discharge.
- Two metal electrodes, with electrical leads sealed through the glass.
- A small quantity of gas at pressure far below atmospheric pressure.
- In some sign tubes, a different gas, a gas mixture, an internal fluorescent phosphor coating, colored glass, or an external filter.
- An external resistor, ballast, or transformer that limits current; some commercial indicators integrate part of this circuitry.
Sign makers evacuate the tube, fill it with the selected gas at a controlled pressure, install the electrodes, and seal the glass. “Evacuated” does not mean empty: the tube still contains gas, just at low pressure. The sealed construction of traditional luminous signs is described by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

How the glow starts
1. Voltage creates an electric field
A voltage difference between the electrodes creates an electric field through the gas. Before ignition, the gas conducts very little. A few free electrons exist from background radiation, impurities, or previous activity.
2. Electrons accelerate and collide
The field accelerates those electrons. At low pressure, an electron can travel far enough between collisions to gain useful energy. At atmospheric pressure, collisions occur too frequently for this type of discharge to operate under ordinary lamp conditions.
3. Collisions excite and ionize atoms
An electron can excite a neon atom by raising one of its electrons to a higher allowed energy level without removing it. A more energetic collision can ionize the atom by knocking an electron away, leaving a positive neon ion and another free electron. Those new electrons can cause further collisions, multiplying the charge carriers.

When enough ionization occurs, the gas changes from mostly insulating to a conducting plasma. The voltage at which this starts is the breakdown, firing, or strike voltage. The discharge then needs a lower sustaining voltage to continue. This start-versus-run behavior is why a lamp can require a high initial voltage yet operate at a lower voltage afterward.

5. Excited atoms emit photons
Excited atoms do not remain excited indefinitely. When an electron falls to a lower energy level, the atom releases the energy difference as electromagnetic radiation. Some of that radiation is visible light. Recombination of free electrons with positive ions and processes at the electrodes also contribute to the discharge, but visible neon color is chiefly associated with radiative transitions in excited atoms—not with the gas simply becoming hot.
Scientific American provides an accessible overview of electron acceleration, excitation, ionization, plasma, and photon emission in neon lamps: How Do Neon Lights Work?
Why genuine neon is orange-red
Neon’s atomic energy levels produce a characteristic orange-red, often described as reddish-orange, emission spectrum. That color is a signature of genuine neon gas. A tube that appears blue, green, purple, or white is not necessarily filled with neon.
How “neon” signs produce other colors
| Method | Result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Argon or another gas | Often blue or other distinctive hues | The lamp is still a gas-discharge tube, but not pure neon. |
| Argon-mercury mixture | Blue and related colors | Mercury-containing equipment needs appropriate handling. |
| Fluorescent phosphor coating | Many bright colors | Ultraviolet discharge radiation excites the coating, which emits visible light. |
| Colored glass or external filter | Modified apparent color | The gas color and the viewed color may differ. |
| LED neon flex | Any LED-defined color | This is an LED product, not a gas-discharge lamp. |
“Neon sign” is therefore commonly a trade term for gas-discharge signage, not a guarantee that every tube contains pure neon. NIST discusses the relationship between gas fills and sign colors in its history of luminous signs.

Why a resistor, ballast, or transformer is essential
After breakdown, a gas discharge can have a region in which increasing current does not require a proportional increase in voltage. Connected directly to a stiff voltage source, the lamp could draw excessive current, damage its electrodes, or overheat. An appropriate current-limiting element is mandatory.
- Miniature indicator: normally uses a series resistor. A representative VCC A2B lamp is listed at 65 VAC and 0.7 mA, with approximately 90 VDC operation; those figures apply to that product, not every NE-2 variant. See the Mouser listing.
- Sign tube: uses a high-voltage, current-limited transformer or electronic ballast. Technical material cites roughly 2,000–15,000 V for some sign transformers and 15–60 mA for a typical standard-sign operating range; actual requirements depend on tube length, diameter, gas, pressure, electrodes, and design. See How Luminous Lamps Work.
- Preassembled panel indicator: may include a housing, leads, and internal limiting components. A VCC 1053A5, for example, is listed for 208–250 VAC; it is not an interchangeable substitute for a bare low-current lamp or a 120 V indicator. See the DigiKey listing.
Philips explains the role of resistive, inductive, and electronic ballasts in gas-discharge lighting: Theory of Light.
Miniature indicator versus sign tube
A small lamp may strike near the tens-of-volts range and run at a fraction of a milliampere, depending on its exact design. A long tube needs a much greater voltage because the discharge path is longer; gas type, pressure, tube diameter, electrode design, and temperature also matter. There is no universal “volts per inch” rule.
On DC, the negative electrode is the cathode and the positive electrode is the anode, so the glow can be concentrated near one electrode. With AC, polarity alternates and both electrodes participate on alternate half-cycles. The exact glow pattern depends on lamp construction, voltage, current, and frequency.

Why a neon lamp flickers or fails
Lamp does not light
- Supply voltage never reaches strike voltage.
- Resistor, ballast, transformer, wiring, or socket is open or incorrectly sized.
- The lamp rating does not match the circuit.
- A sign tube is too long for its power supply.
- Gas has leaked, electrodes have degraded, or an electronic driver has failed.
Lamp lights briefly, then goes out
- The supply is close to the sustaining threshold.
- The ballast is incompatible or underspecified.
- An electronic driver is cycling protection.
- The lamp or tube is overheating.
Only part of a sign tube glows
- Gas leakage, contamination, or electrode degradation.
- Damaged tube sections or incorrect transformer output.
Unusually bright operation
- Missing or incorrect current limiting.
- Overvoltage or a mismatched transformer.
- An altered discharge path or wrong replacement component.
Flicker can be normal with AC or operation near threshold, but it can also indicate poor connections, aging electrodes, gas-pressure changes, or an incompatible ballast. Do not perform energized “touch the wire” tests.
Safety: the gas is inert, the circuit may not be
Safety warning: Do not connect a bare neon lamp directly to household mains, bypass its resistor or ballast, or service a traditional sign while energized. Sign transformers and electronic ballasts can produce lethal voltage, and capacitors may retain energy after power is removed. Broken glass is a physical hazard; mercury-containing systems add handling concerns. High-voltage sign work belongs to a qualified technician.
A mains-rated panel indicator is a complete product category with its own wiring and insulation requirements. Verify the exact part number, voltage, current, AC/DC rating, and whether a limiter is included before replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a neon bulb have a filament?
No. A traditional neon lamp is a cold-cathode gas-discharge device; its electrodes are not heated like an incandescent tungsten filament.
Can I connect an NE-2 directly to a battery?
Usually not. A typical NE-2-style lamp needs a sufficiently high strike voltage and a current-limiting circuit; ordinary low-voltage batteries generally cannot provide the required conditions.
Why does only one electrode glow?
On DC, one electrode is the cathode and the visible glow may concentrate near it. AC alternates the polarity, while the exact appearance also depends on lamp construction and operating conditions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Are blue neon signs really neon?
Not necessarily. Blue signs may use argon, an argon-mercury mixture, phosphors, colored glass, or LEDs rather than pure neon gas.
Do neon lights get hot?
They generally run cooler than incandescent bulbs because they have no hot filament, but electrodes, ballasts, transformers, and glass can still become warm.
