Yes, people really do buy WinRAR. The joke is that its trial reminder is famously easy to dismiss, so many users can keep using the program without feeling an immediate need to pay. That does not make WinRAR free: its license allows a maximum 40-day trial and requires a purchase afterward.
Why does everyone joke that nobody buys WinRAR?
WinRAR presents itself as “try before you buy.” After the trial period, users may still see a registration reminder and be able to dismiss it, rather than being met with an obvious lockout. That combination—commercial licensing but a reminder that can be waved away—made the question “Who actually buys WinRAR?” a durable internet joke.
The reminder’s continued presence is a fact; the company’s reason for making it dismissible is not established in the official material. One plausible interpretation is that a low-friction trial lets people evaluate the software on real files while keeping archive access convenient. That is an interpretation, not a stated company strategy.
Yes, people really do buy WinRAR
There are recent posts from people who say they purchased a license, including users describing a purchase after years of trial use. A Reddit community is also devoted to people who paid for WinRAR. These are evidence that buyers exist, not a representative survey of WinRAR users or sales.

WinRAR also maintains official individual and bulk licensing, reseller, and business sales channels. Those channels make the “nobody pays” line a meme, not a literal account of how the product is sold. The publisher identifies win.rar GmbH as responsible for support, marketing, and sales, and Alexander L. Roshal as copyright holder.
No reliable figure in the available public sources establishes how many users pay or what share of all users they represent. Claims that almost nobody pays—or that most users do—would go beyond the evidence.
Is WinRAR free after the trial?
No, not under the official license terms. The WinRAR EULA describes the software as try-before-you-buy, sets a maximum 40-day test period, and says a license must be purchased afterward to continue using it.

That licensing requirement is separate from what the program does technically. A reminder that can be dismissed, or continued functionality after it appears, does not itself grant permission to use the licensed software without buying a license. The official terms establish the trial limit and purchase requirement; they do not establish that every version universally stops working on day 41.
What does a WinRAR license cost?
The official purchase page displayed the following U.S.-dollar prices, excluding VAT, when checked in August 2026. The final amount may vary with region, tax, reseller, payment method, or promotion; check the page at checkout for current terms.

What does one license cover?
The EULA distinguishes personal home use from business deployment. Under its stated terms, a home user may use one license on all computers and mobile devices they own. A business user needs a license for each computer or mobile device on which the software is installed. Network use also has a specific rule: each client or workstation that uses or accesses the software requires a separate license copy.

- Business: License each computer or mobile device where WinRAR is installed.
- Network: Account for each client or workstation that uses or accesses the software, not just the server installation.
The EULA says a licensed copy may be permanently transferred in its entirety if the recipient accepts the license terms. It also prohibits unauthorized copying, cloning, rental, leasing, and reverse engineering, subject to the agreement’s exceptions. For an organization, asset sale, or software audit, consult the current EULA and the reseller or legal team rather than treating this summary as legal advice.
What does buying provide—and do future upgrades come with it?
WinRAR’s registration notice describes the purchase as a one-time, perpetual license and lists Windows 11 compatibility, full RAR and ZIP support, and AES-256-bit encryption capability. Because that notice is tied to an older notification page, treat these as the publisher’s stated registration benefits, not an independently verified promise for every edition or future release.

A one-time, perpetual license does not by itself settle upgrade rights. The reviewed official material does not clearly establish that every purchase includes every future major version at no added cost. Check the current upgrade and maintenance terms for the specific license before assuming otherwise; user reports about older purchases are anecdotal and may reflect different purchase dates or terms.
When is buying WinRAR worth it?
Buying makes sense when
- You use WinRAR in a business, school, nonprofit, or other managed environment and need a clear license position.
- You regularly create RAR archives and want the official RAR implementation.
- You value the WinRAR workflow, registration support, or supporting the product’s developers.
- The reminder is a persistent annoyance and the price is worthwhile to you.
A free option may be enough when
- You only extract occasional archives and do not need to create RAR files.
- You are comfortable switching to another archive manager.
- Your needs are limited to basic ZIP creation and extraction supported by Windows.
The key distinction is often creating versus extracting RAR files. Receiving a .rar archive does not automatically mean you need WinRAR; regularly creating RAR archives or relying on a WinRAR-specific workflow can change the decision.
What are the alternatives?

What if you never pay?
At home, the reminder may continue to appear and the software may remain usable, but those behaviors do not change the EULA’s 40-day trial limit and purchase requirement. For a business, treat the license terms as a compliance obligation and license the deployment accordingly.
Do not use cracked copies, key generators, or unofficial “free license” downloads. The EULA prohibits distributing or pointing users to hacks, cracks, keys, and key generators. Download from RARLAB or an authorized reseller; if you bought a license but lost the registration details, use the official support and lost-key contacts.
Why can WinRAR keep selling licenses?
The publisher offers individual and volume purchases and works through resellers, including business licensing channels. That establishes how people and organizations can buy WinRAR; it does not reveal the company’s revenue, conversion rate, profit margin, or customer count. It is reasonable to infer that organizational and bulk purchases contribute to sales, but no published breakdown here verifies how much.
