To capture part of a web page that is currently visible on Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + S, choose Rectangular snip, and drag around the area you need. Release the mouse button, then paste the image with Ctrl + V or save it from Snipping Tool.

Capture a visible portion with Windows + Shift + S

This built-in method works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other desktop browsers because it captures the displayed screen rather than depending on the browser. Microsoft describes the shortcut as opening the Snipping Tool overlay for an “image snapshot.” See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

  1. Open the web page and scroll until the text, image or control you want is visible.
  2. Resize or move the browser window if necessary. Close menus or overlays that should not appear in the image.
  3. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and a snipping toolbar appears.
  4. Select Rectangular snip when that mode is shown. Click at one corner of the required area and drag to the opposite corner.
  5. Release the mouse button. Windows copies the selected pixels to the clipboard and opens a notification or Snipping Tool window.
  6. Press Ctrl + V in an email, document, chat, Paint or another image editor, or open Snipping Tool and use its save control.

A rectangle is normally the best choice for a web-page fragment because it keeps text and screenshots aligned with the page. Use Freeform snip only when an irregular outline is genuinely useful; the pixels outside that outline are excluded.

Choose the right capture mode

Mode or shortcut What it captures Best use
Rectangular snip A rectangular area you draw on the current display Articles, forms, charts and ordinary page sections
Freeform snip An irregular hand-drawn screen area Highlighting a nonrectangular object
Windows + Shift + S Opens the region-selection overlay Choosing exactly which visible pixels to copy
Windows + PrtScn The entire screen, saved under Pictures/Screenshots Full-screen evidence, not a page fragment

Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference distinguishes the region shortcut from Windows + PrtScn. Do not use the latter when you need only one part of a page.

#1 Best Overall

Prepare the page before drawing the rectangle

  • Show the complete target: Region snips capture what is visible now. Scroll to the exact paragraph, image or table row first.
  • Set a readable scale: Increase browser zoom if small text is hard to read, but check that the whole target still fits in the viewport.
  • Remove transient UI: Dismiss cookie notices, translation bars, chat bubbles and browser menus if they cover the content.
  • Wait for loading: Let images, fonts and charts finish rendering before invoking the overlay.
  • Use a stable window: Keep the browser focused and avoid moving it while you drag. On a multi-monitor setup, place the page on the monitor you intend to capture.

Copy, save and annotate the snip

The selection is immediately available on the clipboard, so Ctrl + V is the fastest way to put it into a message or document. If you need a file, open the Snipping Tool preview and choose its save command, then select a folder, filename and format. Using Save as gives you a predictable destination even when automatic-save behavior differs between Windows updates.

Snipping Tool can also provide basic markup, such as a pen, highlighter or crop, before you save or copy the result. Crop after capture when you want to remove a few extra pixels without repeating the selection.

What this Windows method can—and cannot—capture

A region snip records the rendered screen area, including browser chrome or other windows if you draw across them. It does not understand the page structure, export the underlying HTML, or automatically stitch content below the current viewport.

For a long article, capture several viewport-sized regions and label them, or use a browser-specific full-page feature if your goal is the entire document. The Microsoft instructions for this shortcut document selecting a screen area; they do not establish a scrolling capture mode. A full-screen Windows + PrtScn image is also not the same as a full web page.

Saving and sharing without losing clarity

Choose a useful format

PNG is a good default for text, diagrams and interface screenshots because it preserves sharp edges. JPEG can produce smaller files for photographic content but may soften small type. If Snipping Tool offers a format choice, select based on whether legibility or file size matters more.

Check the result at 100 percent

Before sending the image, open it at its actual size. Make sure the first and last lines are not clipped, and verify that sensitive information such as account numbers, addresses or private notifications is outside the rectangle or deliberately obscured in an editor.

Keep context when it matters

A tight crop is easier to read, but a small margin can show the page heading or browser context that explains what the fragment represents. Capture the smallest area that still makes the evidence understandable.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens when Windows + Shift + S is pressed

Click the browser window first and try again. If the shortcut still does not open the overlay, launch Snipping Tool from the Start menu and choose New. A managed work PC may have keyboard shortcuts restricted by policy; in that case, use the app’s button or ask your administrator.

The wrong monitor or window is dimmed

Move the browser to the monitor you want and focus it before pressing the shortcut. The overlay is screen-based, so it begins from the current display arrangement rather than from a web-page tab selected in software.

The rectangle is the wrong size

Cancel the snip and start again. Begin at a corner, keep the mouse button held while dragging, and release only at the opposite corner. For pixel-level adjustment after capture, use Snipping Tool’s crop control or an image editor.

The pasted image is blank or incomplete

Wait for the page to finish painting, especially when images or charts load lazily, then repeat the snip. Also check that a browser menu, permission prompt or system notification did not cover the target at the moment of capture.

The page extends below the screen

A region snip cannot select content that is not currently displayed. Scroll and capture additional sections, or choose a browser feature designed for full-page output. Do not expect Windows + PrtScn to solve this; it captures the whole screen at one instant.

The keyboard has no PrtScn key

You do not need PrtScn for a portion capture: Windows + Shift + S is sufficient. Microsoft notes that hardware without a Print Screen key may use Fn + Windows + Space for print-screen functions; see Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut guidance.

For automated, repeatable web captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is different from a desktop snip: the service loads the URL itself, so it can capture a page or a selected element without arranging a Windows window. Use a CSS selector when you need one page component, or set a viewport and device preset for consistent output.

The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF responses, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, hidden selectors, blocked ads or resource types, custom headers and cookies, user-agent, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

Practical choice: local snip or automated capture?

Need Best fit Reason
One visible fragment right now Windows + Shift + S Immediate, free and already installed
Irregular hand-drawn boundary Freeform snip Excludes pixels outside your outline
Entire long page Browser full-page tool or ScreenshotNeo The Windows region overlay is viewport-based
Repeatable selector-based images ScreenshotNeo CSS selection, waits, cleanup and API automation
AI-agent screenshot workflow ScreenshotNeo MCP server Tools are available through MCP clients

For a single visible portion, the Windows shortcut is the shortest path: arrange the page, draw the rectangle, then paste or save. Choose an automated service only when you need repeatability, page-structure controls or captures that do not depend on a person’s desktop.
