Windows 11 does not have one universal download called “Thunderbolt software.” On a compatible PC, most Thunderbolt and USB4 support comes from Windows itself, while the computer manufacturer supplies the BIOS, controller firmware, and model-specific drivers that make the port work correctly.
The right software depends on what you are trying to do: use a Thunderbolt dock, authorize an older device, update controller firmware, or connect two PCs with Intel Thunderbolt Share. Installing a random Intel package is often the wrong fix.
What “Thunderbolt software” can mean
The phrase usually refers to one of five separate components:
| Component | Purpose | Who normally supplies it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows USB4/Thunderbolt device stack | Detects USB4 and compatible Thunderbolt devices and configures tunneling, power states, and networking. | Microsoft through Windows 11 |
| OEM driver package | Connects the operating system to the computer’s particular Thunderbolt or USB4 controller. | Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, MSI, or another PC manufacturer |
| Thunderbolt firmware | Firmware stored in the computer’s controller; updates can fix compatibility, security, and dock problems. | The computer manufacturer |
| Thunderbolt Control Center | A legacy or OEM-dependent management and authorization application. | Intel or the PC manufacturer |
| Thunderbolt Share | Shares displays, input devices, files, and storage between two Windows PCs. | Intel, with licensing supplied through selected PCs and accessories |
For current Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 systems, Intel says a separate Thunderbolt application or driver is not required merely to use a Thunderbolt accessory. The computer still needs compatible hardware, firmware, Windows support, and validated OEM drivers. Intel also directs owners of OEM computers to the manufacturer for Thunderbolt updates rather than offering one universal driver for every Windows PC.

Windows 11’s built-in Thunderbolt and USB4 support
On systems using the Windows USB4 stack, Windows 11 supplies the connection-manager drivers. These handle USB4 host-router detection, compatible Thunderbolt 3 device routers, tunneling, bandwidth management, power states, and USB4 peer-to-peer networking.
| Function | Windows component |
|---|---|
| USB4 host router | Usb4HostRouter.sys |
| USB4 and compatible Thunderbolt 3 device routers | Usb4DeviceRouter.sys |
| USB4 peer-to-peer network adapter | USB4P2PNetAdapter.sys |
These are Windows components, not a generic Intel download that should be installed manually.
Where to view USB4 devices in Windows 11
On a USB4-capable system, open:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices
This page shows detected USB4 hubs and attached devices and, where reported, their capabilities. Microsoft introduced it beginning with Windows 11 build 22621.1778, delivered through KB5026446.
The page is conditional. It appears only when Windows detects a USB4 host router. Its absence can mean that:
- the computer does not support USB4;
- the particular USB-C port does not support Thunderbolt or USB4;
- the host router is not enumerating;
- UEFI has disabled USB4 PCIe tunneling;
- the OEM has not exposed the controller correctly; or
- the computer uses an older Thunderbolt implementation that does not expose the Windows USB4 page.
It is therefore not a universal replacement for every version of Thunderbolt Control Center.
Also check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB and leave Connection notifications enabled. Windows uses those notifications to report limitations involving USB-C, charging, displays, USB4, and Thunderbolt.

Should you install Thunderbolt Control Center?
Usually, do not install it just because a search result tells you to. Thunderbolt Control Center was used by many older Thunderbolt 3 systems, but it is not universally supported on Windows 11.
Intel documents that, on several discontinued Intel NUC products, Thunderbolt Control Center was designed for Windows 10 and may open on Windows 11 without showing attached devices or the driver version. Other manufacturers may still provide a Store-based management component for particular models.
A blank Control Center window therefore does not prove that the Thunderbolt hardware is faulty. On a modern system, Windows’ built-in USB4 stack may be the intended management path. On an older system, the correct application may be an OEM-specific package.
Where to download the correct Thunderbolt driver
- Identify the exact computer model. Press Win+R, enter
msinfo32.exe, and note System Manufacturer and System Model. - Open the manufacturer’s support page and search for that exact model or serial number.
- Install available BIOS/UEFI, Thunderbolt or USB4, chipset, USB-C power-delivery, and graphics updates in the manufacturer’s recommended order.
- Restart after firmware updates, even if the installer does not insist on it.
- Update the dock’s firmware separately. A current laptop firmware does not automatically update the dock.
Do not assume that a Thunderbolt package for one Lenovo, Dell, or HP model is suitable for another model using the same processor or Thunderbolt generation. The controller, firmware, PCIe-tunneling policy, power-delivery implementation, graphics path, and security configuration can all differ.
Recommended update order when a dock fails
- Computer BIOS/UEFI
- Thunderbolt or USB4 controller firmware
- OEM Thunderbolt, USB4, chipset, and USB-C power-delivery drivers
- Graphics driver
- Dock firmware
- Windows Update
- Microsoft Store updates, if the OEM specifically requires an application
Windows Update and Microsoft Store updates are separate. Installing all Windows updates does not necessarily update an OEM management application obtained from the Store.

Look for entries with a yellow warning icon in Device Manager, especially under USB4, Thunderbolt, system devices, USB controllers, or network adapters. A device error is more useful evidence than the mere absence of Thunderbolt Control Center.
Check BIOS and UEFI settings
Firmware settings vary by manufacturer, but the relevant options may be named:
- Thunderbolt Technology Support
- Thunderbolt Support
- USB4 PCIe Tunneling
- Disable USB4 PCIe Tunneling
- Thunderbolt Security Level
- Thunderbolt Boot Support
- PCIe tunneling
- VT-d or IOMMU
For example, Dell documents that a disabled Thunderbolt Technology Support setting or enabled Disable USB4 PCIe Tunneling setting can produce a yellow warning icon. Its documented correction is to enter BIOS, turn Disable USB4 PCIe Tunneling off, and enable Thunderbolt Technology Support.
PCIe tunneling matters because some Thunderbolt devices, including eGPUs and certain storage devices, depend on it. USB, DisplayPort, and PCIe tunneling are separate functions, so a port can continue to provide display or ordinary USB operation while PCIe-based devices fail.
Thunderbolt authorization and security
Older or platform-specific Thunderbolt security settings may require approval before a newly connected device receives PCIe access. Common modes include:
| Mode | Typical behavior |
|---|---|
| No Security | New Thunderbolt devices connect automatically. |
| User Authorization | The user must approve a newly connected device. |
| Secure Connect | The device must pass a saved-key or secure authorization check. |
| DisplayPort Only | DisplayPort devices are allowed, but PCIe Thunderbolt devices are blocked. |
On many Dell systems, the setting is under System Configuration > USB / Thunderbolt Configuration. When Windows presents an approval prompt, the choices may include Always Connect, Connect Only Once, and Do Not Connect.
Do not routinely change security to No Security. It may remove an authorization prompt, but it also weakens an important security control. Kernel DMA Protection and Thunderbolt authorization address related, but different, risks.
Check Kernel DMA Protection
Press Win+R, enter:
msinfo32.exe
In System Information, find Kernel DMA Protection. You can also open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory access protection.

Kernel DMA Protection uses the system IOMMU to restrict unauthorized direct memory access from hot-pluggable PCIe devices, including Thunderbolt and USB4 devices. If it is off, the relevant UEFI settings may include:
- Intel Virtualization Technology
- Intel Virtualization Technology for I/O (VT-d)
- IOMMU
The menu names and available options depend on the manufacturer.
Rule out the cable, port, and connection path
A USB-C connector does not automatically indicate Thunderbolt. The same connector shape may support only USB, charging, DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or a mixture of those features.
- Check the computer’s specifications for the exact port, not merely the model family.
- Use the USB-C port marked with the Thunderbolt lightning symbol or USB4 designation.
- Connect the device directly to the computer, bypassing another hub or dock.
- Use the supplied or certified cable. A USB-C cable can fit physically while lacking the required Thunderbolt capabilities.
- Disconnect other Alternate Mode devices temporarily.
- Check whether the dock or accessory needs more power than the port or dock can provide.
If the device works directly but not through a hub, the problem is likely topology, bandwidth, power, cable capability, or dock firmware rather than the Windows Thunderbolt stack.

Thunderbolt Share is not Thunderbolt Control Center and is not required for ordinary Thunderbolt accessories. It is Intel software for connecting two PCs and sharing a display, keyboard, mouse, files, folders, or storage.
Typical requirements include:
- Windows 11 on both PCs;
- Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 ports on both PCs;
- a Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 cable;
- Thunderbolt Share installed on both PCs;
- at least one PC or accessory with a manufacturer-provided Thunderbolt Share license; and
- Intel graphics driver version 31.0.101.4826 or later where Intel graphics is used.
A computer with a Thunderbolt port is not automatically licensed for Thunderbolt Share. Check Intel’s Thunderbolt Share requirements and licensed configurations.
Intel also documents a reporting oddity: Windows may show a fixed 20 Gbps speed for USB4/Thunderbolt Networking interfaces even when the hardware supports more. That number is not necessarily evidence of a defective cable or limited Thunderbolt hardware.
Security and old installer problems
Intel’s INTEL-SA-00851 advisory affects some Intel Thunderbolt DCH drivers below version 88. Keep the computer on the current OEM-provided package rather than retaining an old downloaded installer.

There is another compatibility issue for older packages: Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy changes beginning with the April 2026 security update can prevent certain older cross-signed drivers from being trusted by default. An old Thunderbolt installer may therefore fail even when the computer and accessory are compatible. The safe response is to obtain a current, digitally signed package from the computer manufacturer—not to disable Windows driver security.
FAQ
Does Windows 11 need Thunderbolt Control Center?
No. Modern Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 PCs generally use Windows 11’s built-in USB4/Thunderbolt support. Control Center is relevant only to certain older or OEM-specific systems.
Where can I download a Thunderbolt driver for Windows 11?
Use the support page for the exact computer model. The manufacturer’s package is validated for that model’s controller, firmware, BIOS settings, security configuration, and USB-C implementation.
Why is USB4 Hubs and Devices missing from Settings?
The page appears only when Windows detects a USB4 host router. The computer or port may not support USB4, the router may not be enumerating, firmware may have restricted PCIe tunneling, or the system may use a legacy Thunderbolt implementation.
Does every USB-C port support Thunderbolt?
No. USB-C describes the connector shape. Thunderbolt, USB4, USB 3, charging, and DisplayPort support can vary from one port to another on the same computer.
Should I set Thunderbolt security to No Security?
Not as a general troubleshooting step. That setting can remove approval requirements but weakens protection against unauthorized Thunderbolt devices. Check the OEM documentation and use the least permissive setting that supports your equipment.
Why does Thunderbolt Control Center open but show no devices?
The application may not be compatible with that Windows 11 platform. Check the Windows USB4 page, Device Manager, OEM firmware, and the computer manufacturer’s support instructions instead.
Is Thunderbolt Share required to use a Thunderbolt dock?
No. Thunderbolt Share is separate software for connecting two PCs and sharing peripherals, displays, files, or storage. It is not needed for normal dock, monitor, storage, or audio use.

The Bottom Line
For Windows 11, start with the computer manufacturer—not a generic “Thunderbolt driver” website. Confirm that the specific USB-C port supports Thunderbolt or USB4, update the BIOS and OEM controller firmware, install model-specific drivers, and check the USB4 Settings page and Device Manager. Use Thunderbolt Control Center only when the manufacturer documents it for that platform, and install Thunderbolt Share only when you need its PC-to-PC features and have a licensed configuration.
