Windows 11 calls grayscale a Color filter, not a separate “grayscale mode.” When the filter is enabled, Windows displays the desktop, File Explorer, Settings, and supported applications in shades of gray.
You can switch it on or off from Settings, toggle it with a keyboard shortcut, or use Quick Settings. If the screen remains black and white after Color filters are disabled, check Contrast themes, Magnifier, and any application-specific appearance settings.
Enable grayscale in Windows 11
Use the main Color filters page when you want to select grayscale specifically.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Accessibility in the left sidebar.
- Select Color filters.
- Turn on the Color filters switch.
- Under the filter list, select Grayscale.
The screen should change immediately. The other available filters may include Red-green (green weak), Red-green (red weak), Blue-yellow, Grayscale inverted, and Inverted. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows display language and build.

Open Color filters directly
You can jump straight to the required Settings page with the Run dialog:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
ms-settings:easeofaccess-colorfilter. - Press Enter.
Windows will open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. Turn on the master switch and choose Grayscale.
Disable grayscale in Windows 11
To return the display to its normal colors:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Accessibility > Color filters.
- Turn the Color filters switch off.
This disables the active filter, whether it is Grayscale, Grayscale inverted, Inverted, or one of the color-vision filters. You do not need to change the selected filter before switching the master control off.
Toggle Color filters with a keyboard shortcut
Windows 11 can toggle Color filters with:
Windows + Ctrl + C
This shortcut is not a dedicated grayscale command. It turns the currently configured Color filter on or off. For example, if Grayscale is selected, the shortcut toggles grayscale. If Inverted is selected, it toggles the inverted filter instead.

Turn the shortcut on or off
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.
- Find Keyboard shortcut for color filters.
- Turn the option on if you want to use Windows + Ctrl + C, or turn it off to prevent the shortcut from working.
Turning off this shortcut does not disable a filter that is already active. If the display is currently grayscale, also turn off the main Color filters switch.
Disabling the shortcut is useful if grayscale keeps appearing after an accidental key combination. It prevents the shortcut from changing the display without changing your selected filter.
Use Quick Settings to turn Color filters on or off
Some Windows 11 builds expose Accessibility controls in Quick Settings.
- Press Windows + A.
- Select Accessibility.
- Turn Color filters on or off.
Quick Settings can toggle the filter, but it normally does not let you choose which filter is active. To select Grayscale rather than another filter, use Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.

If the screen is still black and white
Color filters are not the only Windows features that can alter the screen’s colors. Work through these checks if turning off Color filters did not restore normal color.
1. Turn off Contrast themes
A contrast theme can make Windows appear monochrome or dramatically change its colors independently of Color filters.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- Set the theme drop-down to None.
- Select Apply.
Check the desktop and several applications again after the theme has been removed.
2. Check Magnifier’s color inversion
Magnifier has a separate Invert colors option. It is not the same as the Inverted or Grayscale inverted Color filter.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier.
- If Magnifier is enabled, check the Invert colors setting under Appearance.
- To close Magnifier, press Windows + Esc.
While Magnifier is active, Ctrl + Alt + I toggles its color inversion.
3. Check whether only one application is affected
If Windows, Settings, the taskbar, and multiple applications are grayscale, start with Windows Color filters, Contrast themes, and Magnifier. If only one program appears black and white, Windows may not be responsible.
Open that application’s settings and look for options such as Dark mode, High contrast, Accessibility, Color correction, or an image filter. Some browsers, media players, design tools, and games can change their own appearance without changing the rest of Windows.
Windows 11 terminology and version notes
- The current Windows 11 path is Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.
- Ease of Access is the older Windows 10 name. Instructions using Settings > Ease of Access do not describe the current Windows 11 navigation.
- Older instructions may call the master control Turn on color filters and the shortcut setting Allow the shortcut key to toggle filter on or off. Windows 11 uses different wording.
- A Windows 11 version 21H2 issue once caused the Inverted choice to select Grayscale. Microsoft fixed that issue in preview update KB5022905, OS Build 22000.1641, released on February 21, 2023. It should not normally affect an up-to-date installation.
- Some Windows Insider builds have added controls such as Intensity and Color Boost. These are optional adjustments and are not required to enable or disable grayscale.

What is the shortcut to turn grayscale off in Windows 11?
Press Windows + Ctrl + C. The shortcut works only if Keyboard shortcut for color filters is enabled under Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. You can also turn off the main Color filters switch from that page.

Why does Windows 11 still look black and white after I disable Color filters?
Check Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes and set the theme to None, then select Apply. Also check Magnifier’s Invert colors option. If only one application is affected, inspect that application’s own appearance or accessibility settings.
Can I enable grayscale without opening Settings?
Yes. If Grayscale is already the selected filter and the keyboard shortcut is enabled, press Windows + Ctrl + C. You can also press Windows + A and toggle Color filters from Accessibility in Quick Settings when that control is available.
Does Windows key plus Ctrl plus C select grayscale?
No. It toggles Color filters on or off. It activates whichever filter is currently selected, so choose Grayscale in Settings > Accessibility > Color filters first if that is the effect you want.
The Bottom Line
For a reliable fix, open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. Turn on the master switch and choose Grayscale to enable it; turn the switch off to disable it. The Windows + Ctrl + C shortcut is only an on/off toggle for the selected filter, and it must be enabled in Color filters settings first.
