Equalizer APO can appear to be installed correctly while processing the wrong playback device, a different Bluetooth profile, or an application-specific output. Windows 11 can also disable the APO path through its audio-enhancement setting, while an audio-driver update may remove Equalizer APO’s device registration.
Work through the checks below in order. Start by identifying the exact device producing sound, then confirm that Equalizer APO is attached to it, test the configuration with a deliberately large volume change, and only then change installation modes or reinstall drivers.
1. Confirm that Windows is using the device configured for Equalizer APO
Equalizer APO is installed per audio endpoint. Installing it for your laptop speakers does not install it for a USB DAC, monitor audio output, Bluetooth headset, or virtual audio cable.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the device that is currently producing sound.
- Note its exact name and connection type.
- Open Equalizer APO’s Device Selector. In older installations, this tool is called Configurator.
- Select the same playback device by clicking its connection name, not merely a similarly named device.
Test every likely duplicate separately. For example, a Bluetooth headset may appear as a high-quality stereo endpoint and a hands-free endpoint. A monitor connected over HDMI may appear separately from the computer’s internal speakers.

Check the application’s output device
Windows can route an individual application to a different endpoint from the system default:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Expand Apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Check its Output device and set it to the device configured in Device Selector.
- Verify that the app’s volume is not muted or set unusually low.
If you are trying to process a microphone, select the microphone or capture endpoint separately in Device Selector. Equalizer APO can be installed on capture devices as well as playback devices.
2. Use the current Device Selector installation test
Equalizer APO 1.4 replaced the old Configurator with Device Selector. Older guides that tell you to open Configurator are referring to the previous name; the purpose is the same.
- Open Device Selector from the Equalizer APO folder in the Start menu.
- Click the connection name for the affected device.
- Run the built-in installation test.
- Allow Device Selector to adjust the installation mode automatically if it recommends doing so.
- Restart Windows, or restart the Windows audio services as described below.
Use the automatic adjustment first. Do not immediately force a mode from an old guide. Equalizer APO 1.3 and later normally use SFX/EFX on Windows 8.1 and newer, but combined Windows 11 Bluetooth stereo and hands-free devices use SFX/MFX by default because EFX does not work for that configuration.
3. Keep Windows audio enhancements enabled
A common troubleshooting recommendation is to turn off Windows audio enhancements. That can help with crackling or distortion, but it can also disable the APO processing path that Equalizer APO needs. If Equalizer APO has no effect, check that enhancements are enabled.
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > [your audio device], then find Audio enhancements. Keep the setting enabled while testing Equalizer APO.
Some drivers still expose the older properties dialog:

- On an Enhancements tab, Disable all enhancements must be unchecked.
- If there is no Enhancements tab, open Advanced and make sure Enable audio enhancements is checked.
Restart the audio service or Windows after changing this setting.
4. Prove whether the configuration is being loaded
Before adjusting equalizer bands, test the actual configuration file. The default file is:
C:Program FilesEqualizerAPOconfigconfig.txt
- Open
config.txtin a text editor with administrator permission if Windows does not allow you to save it. - While audio is playing, temporarily change or add this line:
Preamp: -20 dB
- Save the file.
- Listen for an immediate, obvious volume reduction.
- Restore the original value, such as:
Preamp: +0 dB
If the volume does not change immediately, Equalizer APO is either attached to another endpoint, the application is bypassing that endpoint, the APO is disabled, or the configuration is not loading. This test is more useful than making a small change to a single EQ band.
Check included configuration files
If config.txt loads another file, confirm that the Include line points to a real, readable file:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Include: my-config.txt
Place the included file in C:Program FilesEqualizerAPOconfig, unless the line specifies another valid path. Check for spelling errors, a missing file extension, and permissions. An unreadable file selected through Include or Convolution can prevent the intended configuration from loading.
5. Restart the audio service after installation changes
Equalizer APO is not used by an existing audio session until the Windows audio service is restarted. A full reboot is the simplest option, but you can restart the services manually:
- Select Start, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart.
- Close and reopen the application you are testing.
Device Selector may also restart the audio service and dependent services on supported systems. If the device still behaves as though nothing changed, reboot Windows before continuing.

6. Try troubleshooting options only when the normal installation fails
In Device Selector, select the affected device and enable Troubleshooting options. You may see controls for Use original APO and Install APO.
Recommended Free Tools
Resolve conflicts with the original APO
Some audio drivers use their own APOs for effects such as surround sound, speaker correction, or microphone processing. If playback or recording is unstable:
- Open the device’s troubleshooting options.
- Uncheck both Use original APO checkboxes.
- Apply the change and restart the audio service.
- Test Equalizer APO again.
This can remove features supplied by the sound-card or headset manufacturer. If you need one of those features, try unchecking only one original-APO option instead.
Try a single installation stage
Some sound-card drivers disable features when another APO is registered in both processing stages. In that case, uncheck one of the Install APO checkboxes so Equalizer APO runs only in the pre-mix or post-mix stage. Apply the setting, restart audio, and repeat the Preamp: -20 dB test.
Do not blindly change every device to LFX/GFX or SFX/EFX. Those recommendations are incomplete: current Windows versions generally use SFX/EFX, while combined Bluetooth profiles require SFX/MFX. The installation test is the better starting point.
7. Install the latest Equalizer APO version
The latest official release is Equalizer APO 1.4.2. SourceForge lists x64, x86, and ARM64 installers, with the 1.4.2 files modified on March 21, 2025.
Version 1.4.2 is particularly relevant on Windows 11 because it fixes GraphicEQ and Convolution failures on Bluetooth devices. It also fixes Configuration Editor crashes on CPUs without AVX support that were introduced in version 1.4.1.

- Download the appropriate installer from the official SourceForge release folder.
- Use x64 for a normal 64-bit Intel or AMD Windows installation, x86 for 32-bit Windows, or ARM64 on Windows-on-ARM.
- Install or upgrade Equalizer APO.
- Open Device Selector and verify the affected endpoint again.
- Restart Windows or the audio services.
Windows-on-ARM support was added through the ARM64 build. VST support is limited there because VST plug-ins also need native ARM64 versions.
8. Repair the audio driver after an update or reinstall
A driver update can create a new device instance, change APO registration, or disable registry values required by Equalizer APO. If the problem began after Windows Update or a manufacturer driver update, repair the driver before rebuilding your EQ configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device and choose Update driver.
- Restart Windows.
If that does not help, uninstall the audio driver and install the latest version from the computer, motherboard, sound-card, or headset manufacturer. Then open Device Selector and install Equalizer APO on the device instance that now appears.
Also check Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Equalizer APO’s device tool checks and repairs registry values required for operation, so rerun it after a driver change rather than assuming the old registration remains valid.
9. Check the Equalizer APO error log
Critical errors are written to:
C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataLocalTempEqualizerAPO.log
The file normally does not exist unless an error occurs. If it is present, open it after reproducing the failure and look for the affected device, configuration file, permission error, or failed APO initialization.
Enable trace logging for a difficult case
- Press Win+R, type
regedit.exe, and press Enter. - Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREEqualizerAPO
- Set
EnableTracetotrue. - Play or record through the affected device and reproduce the problem.
- Review the log.
- Set
EnableTraceback tofalsewhen finished.
Changing the registry incorrectly can cause Windows problems. Change only the specified value, and export the key first if you want a rollback.

10. Check whether the application bypasses Windows APO processing
Equalizer APO is not guaranteed to affect every program. Hardware-accelerated OpenAL can access audio hardware directly and bypass the Windows APO chain. Equalizer APO’s documentation says there is no way to add APO support to hardware-accelerated OpenAL.

FAQ
Why does Equalizer APO show as installed but do nothing?
It is usually installed on a different endpoint from the one producing sound, or Windows audio enhancements are disabled for that endpoint. Check the selected device in Windows Sound and Device Selector, enable audio enhancements, and confirm the change with Preamp: -20 dB.
Should I turn off Windows audio enhancements for Equalizer APO?
Not as a general fix. Equalizer APO’s documentation requires enhancements to remain enabled for the APO path. Turning them off may help crackling or distortion, but it can also make Equalizer APO stop processing audio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Configurator still included with Equalizer APO?
Equalizer APO 1.4 replaced Configurator with Device Selector. Older documentation may still use the Configurator name, but current installations use Device Selector and its installation test.
Which installation mode should I choose?
Use Device Selector’s installation test and automatic adjustment first. Do not universally force LFX/GFX or SFX/EFX: normal modern Windows devices commonly use SFX/EFX, while combined Windows 11 Bluetooth profiles use SFX/MFX.
How do I make Equalizer APO work with a Bluetooth headset?
Select the exact Bluetooth endpoint currently in use, install Equalizer APO for it, use the Device Selector test, and restart audio. Upgrade to version 1.4.2 if GraphicEQ or Convolution fails on Windows 11 Bluetooth devices.
Why does Equalizer APO work in some programs but not others?
An application may be assigned a different output device in Windows Volume mixer, or it may use a direct hardware path such as hardware-accelerated OpenAL that bypasses Windows APO processing.
The Bottom Line
The decisive test is not whether Equalizer APO is installed; it is whether the APO is attached to the endpoint and configuration that Windows is actually using. Select the active device in Settings > System > Sound, verify the same device in Device Selector, keep audio enhancements enabled, and test with Preamp: -20 dB. If that fails, use Device Selector’s troubleshooting options, restart the audio services, and repair the driver or update to Equalizer APO 1.4.2.
