The answer depends on both your device and the app that downloaded the file. A browser usually uses the operating system’s standard Downloads folder, but apps such as Netflix, Spotify, email clients, cloud-storage tools, and game launchers may keep downloads inside their own storage.
Use the section for your device below. If the file still does not appear, follow the troubleshooting steps at the end—especially if you opened a document instead of saving it, changed the download location, or downloaded offline content from an app.
Find downloads on Android
On most Android phones, browser downloads are available through the file manager:
- Open Files by Google.
- Tap Browse.
- Tap Downloads.
Depending on the manufacturer, the file manager may be called My Files, File Manager, or something similar. Android phones do not all ship with the same file-management app or labels.

If you connected the phone to a computer with a USB cable, open the phone’s storage on the computer and check its Downloads folder.
When Android’s Downloads folder is empty
Android does not require every app to use the standard Downloads folder. A downloaded movie, song, book, podcast, or offline playlist may remain inside the app that downloaded it. Open that app and look for Downloads, Offline, Saved, or Attachments.
Some apps store files in app-specific directories. Modern Android versions also restrict ordinary file managers from browsing parts of Android/data. Finding a file in an app-specific location does not mean it will appear in the normal Downloads category, and you may not be able to access that directory directly.

Find downloads on an iPhone or iPad
Apple devices use the Files app for most downloaded documents:
- Open Files.
- Tap Browse.
- Tap Downloads.
Depending on Safari’s configured destination, the folder may be under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone/On My iPad. To check both locations, open:

- On My iPhone or On My iPad → Downloads
Use Safari’s download shortcut
After a Safari download starts or finishes, tap the Downloads button next to the search field, then tap Downloads. Safari can show the current download status and provide a shortcut to the downloaded item.
Check or change Safari’s download location
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → Safari.
- Tap Downloads.
- Review the selected location: iCloud Drive, On My iPhone/On My iPad, or a folder selected through Other….
Changing this setting does not move files that were already downloaded. If Safari previously used iCloud Drive and now uses local storage, check both Downloads folders.

Images may be in Photos instead
A picture saved with Save Image normally goes to the Photos app, not necessarily to Files → Downloads. Web documents, PDFs, and files downloaded from mail are generally handled by the Files app.
Find downloads on Windows 10 and Windows 11
The normal Windows Downloads folder is:

- Open File Explorer.
- Select Downloads in the navigation pane.
If Downloads is not listed, click the File Explorer address bar, enter %USERPROFILE%Downloads, and press Enter.
You can also press the Windows key, type Downloads, and open the Downloads folder from the results. For a direct Run command, press Windows-R, enter the following, and press Enter:

- Open Chrome.
- Click More (the three-dot menu) → Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Check the folder shown beside Location.
Click Change to select another default folder. You can also enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. If that option is enabled, the location may be different for every file.

Chrome can display PDFs in its built-in viewer. To make Chrome download them:
- Open More → Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security → Site Settings.
- Open Additional content settings → PDF documents.
- Select Download PDFs.
You can also save an individual PDF from Chrome’s viewer using its Save button.
Find downloads on macOS
The usual macOS Downloads folder is:
/Users/<username>/DownloadsThe shorter Terminal form is ~/Downloads.
To open it in Finder:
- Open Finder.
- Click Downloads in the sidebar under Favorites.
If Downloads is missing from the sidebar, it may only have been removed from Favorites. In Finder, choose Go → Downloads, or press Command-Option-L. From Terminal, run:
open ~/DownloadsReveal a Chrome download on a Mac
- Open Chrome and click More → Downloads.
- Find the file in the list.
- Choose Show in Folder.
To check or change Chrome’s default folder, open More → Settings → Downloads. Click Change, or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading.

Why a download may not be in the standard folder

Use download history to identify the file
Browser download history can tell you the filename, extension, and sometimes the file’s current location. Search for an extension such as .pdf, .zip, .docx, .jpg, or .mp4 if you do not remember the name.
However, download history is not a second copy of the file. If a browser lists a download but the file is missing, it may never have completed, or it may have been moved, deleted, quarantined, or saved somewhere else. The operating system’s file manager is the authority for where the file exists now.
In Chrome, removing an item from the Downloads page with Remove removes the entry from Chrome’s list; it does not restore or create the file on the computer.

Where are downloads stored on Android?
Open Files by Google, tap Browse, and select Downloads. Some apps use their own Downloads or Offline area instead, so music, videos, books, and app-only content may not appear there.

Why is my iPhone Downloads folder empty?
Safari may be saving to a different storage location. Check Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads, then inspect both iCloud Drive → Downloads and On My iPhone/iPad → Downloads. Existing files remain in their original location after you change the setting.

The download may have been canceled, blocked, opened without being saved, moved, deleted, or sent to a custom folder. Check the browser’s download settings and search by the file’s extension.
Are Netflix, Spotify, and similar offline downloads saved in Downloads?
Usually not. Offline media is commonly managed inside the app and may be encrypted or stored in app-private storage. Use the service’s own Downloads or Offline screen.
The Bottom Line
Start with the standard location: Files by Google → Browse → Downloads on Android, Files → Browse → Downloads on iPhone and iPad, C:Users<username>Downloads on Windows, or ~/Downloads on macOS. If the file is absent, check the browser’s configured destination and the downloading app itself. A download listing alone does not prove that a completed file remains in the default folder.
