Windows 11 does not include a built-in FM tuner. The radio apps below stream audio over the internet, so they require a working connection; installing one does not let a standard PC receive over-the-air FM broadcasts.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “radio.” TuneIn, iHeart, myTuner, Streema, radio.net, and Online Radio Box are mainly discovery services for live stations. Radio Garden is best for exploring stations geographically. VLC is a lightweight player when you already have a station’s stream URL. Spotify focuses on personalized music radio, while Audials Play adds recording and library features.

1. TuneIn Radio

TuneIn is the strongest all-purpose option if you want more than a list of live FM stations. Its current service includes Listen Now, Sports, Music, News & Talk, Podcasts, and Audiobooks. You can search for stations, podcasts, audiobooks, or events from one search field.

The web player also exposes Sign In and Sign Up, but you can open the site and use basic playback without first creating an account.

2. iHeart: Radio, Music, Podcasts

iHeart is a particularly useful choice for listeners looking for US radio stations, podcasts, artist-based stations, news, and events. Its website currently includes For You, Your Library, Live Radio, Podcasts, Artist Radio, News, Features, Events, and Contests.

The Microsoft Store lists iHeart: Radio, Music, Podcasts. Install it through Start → Microsoft Store → search “iHeart” → select the app → Get. On the website, the direct path to a live station is Live Radio → All Cities → select a station. You can also choose View More Live Stations.

Artist Radio is different from listening to a particular terrestrial station. It creates a custom station based on an artist or band, so it is closer to personalized streaming than to an AM/FM broadcast. iHeart describes its live stations as being from around the country, not as a worldwide directory. Some stations, songs, podcasts, or features may be unavailable outside supported markets.

3. Radio Garden

Radio Garden turns station discovery into an interactive globe. Open radio.garden, drag or rotate the globe, select a location, and choose an available station. It is a browser-based service rather than a verified native Windows Store radio application.

Radio Garden requires JavaScript. If JavaScript is disabled by the browser, the site shows a JavaScript-required message and the globe and player do not load.

You can make it feel like a Windows app in Microsoft Edge:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Radio Garden in Edge.
  2. Click … (Settings and more).
  3. Select Apps → Install this site as an app.
  4. Click Install. Edge may display the site-specific wording Install Radio Garden as an app.

This creates a standalone browser window and Start-menu entry. It does not download stations or provide offline radio. A city marker also does not guarantee that every station in that city is available or currently streaming.

4. VLC media player

VLC is not a station directory. It is the best option when you already know the direct internet-stream URL and want a simple, flexible player with broad format support.

Download the Windows installer from VideoLAN’s VLC page. Then open VLC and use:

  1. Select Media → Open Network Stream…, or press Ctrl+N.
  2. Paste the station’s direct stream URL into Network URL.
  3. Click Play.

You can also launch a stream from Command Prompt:

vlc.exe "https://example.com/stream.mp3"

If VLC is not on your PATH, use its full installation path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"C:Program FilesVideoLANVLCvlc.exe" "https://example.com/stream.mp3"

A station’s webpage is not necessarily a playable stream. VLC may fail when the URL has expired, the server requires a browser referer or authentication, the stream is geo-blocked, the certificate is invalid, or the codec is unsupported. Recording is also not guaranteed for every feed; it depends on the stream format and VLC configuration.

5. Audials Play

Audials Play – Radio & Podcasts is listed in the Microsoft Store. Install it through Start → Microsoft Store → search “Audials Play” → select Audials Play – Radio & Podcasts → Get.

Unlike a bare stream player, Audials is designed around radio and podcast discovery with additional recording and library functionality. That makes it a better fit if you want to collect programs or organize listening rather than simply open one station.

Do not assume that every station can be recorded. Recording can fail when a broadcaster uses protected or dynamically generated playback, geo-restrictions, or a browser-dependent player. The Store edition and desktop editions may also have different interfaces, licensing, or features, so check the edition you install before relying on a particular recording option.

6. myTuner Radio

myTuner is useful when you know roughly where a station is located or which genre you want. Its website includes a Search for radios worldwide field, plus Radio Stations and Podcasts sections.

For structured browsing, use Find your radio station → Search by country → select a country or region → Filter by State/Region → Filter by City → Filter by Genre. The available genre labels include Pop / Top 40, 80s, Oldies, News, Talk, Local, Classical, Jazz, Sports, and World Music.

The site exposes Sign In, but public station pages and basic browsing do not require an account. myTuner presents itself as a cross-device service, so it should not be described as a Windows-only application. As with other directories, an entry can remain visible after a broadcaster’s stream goes offline, changes URL, or becomes geo-blocked.

7. Simple Radio by Streema

Streema’s website is a practical browser directory for regional station discovery. Open Streema’s Radio Stations page and browse by region, including North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The website should not be treated as proof that a native Windows 11 Store app exists. Android or iOS availability for the Simple Radio product does not establish Windows availability.

Basic station discovery does not necessarily require an account, although Streema currently offers Login and Create an account for account-based functions. A directory page may load successfully while playback fails because the broadcaster’s underlying feed is down or has changed.

8. radio.net

radio.net is a browser-based station service. Open radio.net, search for a station, and use its categories and playback controls. If you prefer a separate window, Microsoft Edge can install the site as an app:

  1. Open radio.net in Edge.
  2. Click … → Apps → Install this site as an app.
  3. Click Install.

The resulting shortcut is a Progressive Web App-style browser wrapper, not a native Win32 or Microsoft Store radio program. It still needs an internet connection.

Playback can be affected by privacy extensions, autoplay blocking, third-party-cookie restrictions, geo-blocking, or a dead broadcaster feed. Directory size and station availability change over time, so fixed station-count claims are not useful.

9. Spotify

Spotify is the right choice when “radio” means continuous, personalized music rather than live AM/FM broadcasts. Its radio feature creates recommendations from an artist, album, song, or playlist.

Download the official Windows installer from Spotify’s Windows download page. After installation, launch it from Start → All → Spotify and sign in to a Spotify account.

In the desktop app, open an artist, album, song, or playlist, click its … menu, and choose Go to radio when that option is offered. Menu labels and available controls can vary by content type, country, account tier, and client version. Spotify’s radio feature is not a general directory of live terrestrial station streams. Offline playback, where available with an eligible paid plan, also does not make live radio available offline.

10. Online Radio Box

Online Radio Box is a web-based directory. Open it in a browser, search for a station, and select the station’s play control. Like radio.net, it can be installed as an Edge web app using … → Apps → Install this site as an app → Install.

That installation only creates a convenient standalone window. It does not add an FM tuner or cache live streams for offline use. Online directories may show multiple feeds for one station; if one fails, another may work. Playback can also fail because of a changed stream URL, server downtime, geo-restriction, or browser autoplay policy.

How to choose the right Windows 11 radio app

Your priority Best starting point
Live radio plus podcasts, sports, and news TuneIn
US live stations and artist-based radio iHeart
Exploring stations by location on a globe Radio Garden
Playing a direct stream URL VLC
Recording and organizing radio content Audials Play
Filtering by country, city, and genre myTuner
Personalized music rather than live stations Spotify

Fixing common playback problems

  1. Test another station. If one feed fails but others play, the problem is probably the broadcaster’s stream rather than Windows.
  2. Check autoplay permissions. In Edge, open the site permissions for the radio website and allow audio playback if the browser has blocked it.
  3. Disable extensions temporarily. Ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers can prevent web players from loading.
  4. Try the station’s official website. A directory listing may be outdated even when the broadcaster has a replacement player or stream.
  5. Repair a Store app. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, open the app’s … menu, select Advanced options → Repair, and test it again.
  6. Reset the app if Repair fails. Reset removes the app’s local data, so you may need to sign in again.
  7. Update Store apps. Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates. Some Store versions label this button Check for updates.

FAQ

Are these Windows 11 radio apps free?

The services listed have free access or free entry points, but some offer advertising, premium plans, account-only features, or market-specific restrictions. Check the current app or service listing before subscribing.

Can Windows 11 receive FM radio without the internet?

Not with ordinary built-in PC hardware. These apps stream internet audio. An offline or over-the-air setup would require separate compatible radio hardware and software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which app has the most local stations?

There is no permanent winner because directories and broadcaster feeds change by country and city. Try TuneIn, myTuner, Streema, and radio.net, then compare the station’s official stream if an entry does not play.

Why does a station appear in search but not play?

The broadcaster may be offline, the directory entry may contain an old URL, or the stream may be geo-blocked, authenticated, protected, or restricted to a browser player. Try another feed or the station’s official website.

Can I install Radio Garden or radio.net from the Microsoft Store?

Treat both as browser services unless a current Microsoft Store listing specifically confirms a native app. Edge can install either website as an app-like shortcut, but that remains a web wrapper and still needs internet access.

Does VLC find radio stations automatically?

No. VLC plays a direct network stream URL that you provide; it does not supply TuneIn-style station discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

TuneIn is the best general-purpose pick for live radio and on-demand audio, while iHeart is a strong choice for supported US stations and artist radio. Use Radio Garden for location-based exploration, myTuner for detailed country and genre filtering, and VLC when you already have a direct stream URL. Choose Audials Play if recording and organizing content matters. For personalized music rather than live broadcasting, use Spotify.

Whichever service you choose, expect availability to vary by location and broadcaster. A station directory is only an index; the underlying stream can still be offline, changed, restricted, or unavailable in your country.
