On a typical Windows 11 installation, the personal OneDrive folder is located at C:Users<UserName>OneDrive. That is the standard path, not a fixed rule. During setup, OneDrive can use another folder or another local drive, so the location shown in the OneDrive setup window is more reliable than assuming it is on C:.
This guide shows how to find the folder, select a different location, move an existing OneDrive folder safely, and troubleshoot cases where files are not appearing or syncing.
Where is the OneDrive folder in Windows 11?
For a personal Microsoft account, the usual folder is:

The name shown in File Explorer depends on the account type:
| Account | Typical File Explorer name |

| Personal Microsoft account | OneDrive or OneDrive – Personal |
| Work or school account | OneDrive – [CompanyName] |
OneDrive does not have to stay on the C: drive. It can be configured on another local drive, such as D:. A mapped network drive cannot be used as the OneDrive sync location.
Find the OneDrive folder from File Explorer
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Look in the navigation pane on the left for OneDrive, OneDrive – Personal, or OneDrive – [CompanyName].
- Select that entry to open the synced folder.
If the navigation entry is not obvious, open the user-profile folder directly. Click the File Explorer address bar, enter:
C:Users<UserName>
Replace <UserName> with your Windows account name, then press Enter. Open the applicable OneDrive folder if it is present.
Another way to locate it is to open OneDrive’s settings:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area near the clock. Select the upward arrow first if the icon is hidden.
- Select Help and Settings.
- Select Settings.
- Use the account and sync settings to identify the account currently connected.
The folder displayed by File Explorer is the working local folder. It is not necessarily the same as the root of your online OneDrive shown at onedrive.live.com.
Choose the OneDrive folder during first setup
If OneDrive has not yet been configured on the PC, choose its location before synchronization begins:

- Open Start, type OneDrive, and select the OneDrive app.
- Sign in with your personal Microsoft account or work/school account.
- When the This is your OneDrive folder screen appears, review the displayed path.
- Select Change location to choose a different folder, or select Next to accept the displayed location.
- Continue through the setup screens. On All your files, ready and on-demand, select Next.
Do not assume that the default is always C:Users<UserName>OneDrive. The path shown in the setup wizard is authoritative because the folder may have been changed previously or the account may be configured differently.
Move an existing OneDrive folder from C: to another drive
Do not simply drag an active OneDrive folder to D: while OneDrive is syncing. Microsoft’s supported method is to unlink the PC, move the folder, and then link OneDrive to the moved folder.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area.
- Select Help and Settings, then Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC, then select Unlink account.
- Open File Explorer and move the existing OneDrive folder to the desired local drive. For example, you might move it to
D:OneDrive. - Start OneDrive again from Start by typing OneDrive and selecting the app.
- Select Get started and sign in with the same account.
- Continue until the screen displaying the OneDrive folder location appears.
- Select Change Location, select the folder you moved, and select OK.
- When OneDrive warns that the destination already contains files, select Use this location.
- Complete setup. If you previously synchronized only selected folders, repeat that folder-selection choice after relinking.
Unlinking does not delete your OneDrive files in the cloud. It disconnects the PC from the sync relationship. Files that were available locally remain in the local folder, and changes made while the account is unlinked are synchronized after the account is linked again.
What the OneDrive status icons mean
Finding a filename in the OneDrive folder does not necessarily mean that the complete file is stored on the computer. Windows 11 commonly uses Files On-Demand:
Recommended Free Tools
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Available when online | The file is a placeholder. It downloads when you open it and requires an internet connection. |
| Available on this device | The file is downloaded and remains locally available. |
| Always keep on this device | The file or folder is kept downloaded on the PC. |
To make a file or folder available offline, right-click it in File Explorer and select Always keep on this device. To remove the local copy while retaining the cloud copy, right-click it and select Free up space.
Deleting a file from the local OneDrive folder is not a local-only operation. Deletions, edits, and new files in the synced folder are synchronized with OneDrive and can affect the cloud copy and other connected devices.
Why OneDrive may not sync a folder
The folder is online-only
An online-only placeholder can be visible in File Explorer but may not be usable without an internet connection. Right-click the item and choose Always keep on this device if you need a local copy.

The path or filename is not supported
OneDrive rejects several characters and reserved names. File and folder names cannot contain:
" * : < > ? / |
Leading and trailing spaces are not allowed. These names are also blocked:
.lock
CON
PRN
AUX
NUL
COM0–COM9
LPT0–LPT9
_vti_
desktop.ini
Names beginning with ~$ are blocked as well. Long paths can cause errors: Microsoft’s folder-backup guidance requires the complete Windows path, including the filename, to be fewer than 260 characters for that operation. The broader OneDrive and SharePoint limitations also specify a maximum of 255 characters for an individual path segment and a combined OneDrive-root-plus-relative-path limit of 520 characters.

The local path uses an unsupported drive type
OneDrive cannot sync from a mapped network drive. It also does not support synchronization through symbolic links or junction points. Use a normal folder on a locally attached drive instead.
OneDrive is running with elevated privileges
Running OneDrive as an administrator can prevent OneDrive commands from appearing in File Explorer’s context menu. Start the normal OneDrive app rather than an elevated instance.

Reset OneDrive when the folder is stuck
Resetting OneDrive can repair a damaged sync configuration, but it disconnects the sync connections and causes a full resynchronization. It does not delete cloud data or files. Previously excluded folders may need to be selected again.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. A blank Command Prompt window may appear and close before Microsoft Store opens. - Open Run again and enter:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
If Windows cannot find that file, try:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
If that also fails, try:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
After the reset, open Start, type OneDrive, and select the OneDrive desktop app to start it again.
For a persistent sign-in problem, open Run and enter:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDrivesettings
Delete PreSignInSettingsConfig.json, then start OneDrive and sign in again.
Additional limits worth checking
- A single file larger than 250 GB cannot be synchronized by OneDrive.
- A Windows device can have one OneDrive for home account and up to nine OneDrive for work or school accounts signed in and syncing concurrently.
- Folder backup can be blocked when important Windows folders connected to a domain are protected using a personal OneDrive account.
- Error
0x80070005during folder backup can indicate that the Prohibit User from manually redirecting Profile Folders Group Policy is enabled.
Quick answer: is OneDrive always in C:Users?
No. C:Users<UserName>OneDrive is the common default for a personal account, but the folder can be placed on another local drive during setup or moved later using the unlink, move, and relink procedure. In File Explorer, the OneDrive entry and the path shown during setup are the best ways to identify its actual location.
