The browser error Failed to load resource: net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT means a request was stopped on your device before the page received the resource. The “client” is usually your browser, an ad blocker, a privacy extension, a browser shield, or security software—not the website’s server.
It commonly appears in Chrome or Chromium-based browsers when a script, image, stylesheet, iframe, analytics request, or advertising URL matches a blocking rule. You may see it only in Developer Tools > Console, while the page appears to work normally.
What causes ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT?
Typical causes include:
- Ad blockers such as uBlock Origin, AdBlock, or Adblock Plus.
- Privacy extensions that block trackers, cookies, scripts, or fingerprinting services.
- Built-in browser protections, including Brave Shields or enhanced tracking protection.
- Antivirus or internet-security software filtering web traffic.
- A custom hosts file that redirects advertising or tracking domains.
- A browser profile with outdated or corrupted extension rules.
- A page that requests a resource whose URL contains terms such as
ads,banner,analytics, ortracker.
The error does not necessarily indicate a broken page. A blocked advertising pixel may produce the message without affecting the article, login form, or checkout. A blocked JavaScript file, CSS file, or authentication request can cause visible problems.
1. Reload the page and identify what was blocked
- Reload the page with Ctrl + R on Windows or Linux, or Command + R on macOS.
- If the issue remains, open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl + Shift + I.
- Open the Console tab and locate the
net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENTentry. - Note the blocked URL and the file type. A URL containing
adsordoubleclickis likely an advertising request. A URL ending in.js,.css, or an application API path may be required for the page to work.
Do not assume every console error is the cause of the visible problem. If the blocked request is for an advertisement or tracking service, you can usually leave it blocked.

2. Test the page in a private window
Open an Incognito window in Chrome or another private window in your browser, then visit the page again. In Chrome, use Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + N on macOS.
Extensions are commonly disabled in private windows unless you explicitly allowed them. If the page works there, an extension or its filtering list is the most likely cause. Private browsing is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix; it does not automatically disable every browser protection or security product.
3. Disable extensions one at a time
Turn off the suspected extension temporarily, reload the page, and check whether the error disappears.

Chrome and other Chromium browsers
- Open the browser menu.
- Choose Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, coupon extensions, and security extensions.
- Reload the affected page after disabling each extension.
Disable one extension at a time rather than all of them. This identifies the rule source and avoids leaving unrelated extensions disabled.
Firefox
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose Add-ons and themes.
- Open Extensions.
- Use the switch beside an extension to disable it, then reload the page.
If you find the culprit, update it and its filter lists before deciding whether to remove it. An old blocking list can incorrectly match a legitimate resource.
4. Allow the website in your ad blocker
If you trust the site and need the missing feature, add only that site to the blocker’s allowlist. Most blockers provide a toolbar icon with an option such as Pause on this site, Disable on this site, or Trust this site.

After changing the setting, reload the page. If the site uses more than one domain—for example, a main site and a separate login or content-delivery domain—you may need to allow the specific domain shown in the blocked URL.

Allowlisting the site is safer than turning off the blocker globally. Re-enable blocking on sites you do not trust, and avoid allowing a domain merely because doing so removes a warning.
5. Check built-in browser shields and tracking protection
Brave
On the affected page, select the Brave lion icon in the address bar and temporarily lower or disable Shields. Reload the page. If that fixes the problem, restore Shields and adjust the individual script, cookie, or tracker setting instead of leaving all protections disabled.
Firefox
Select the shield icon beside the address bar and temporarily turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for the site. Reload the page, then decide whether the site is worth adding as an exception.
Microsoft Edge
Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services and review tracking-prevention settings. You can also test the page with extensions disabled. The exact blocking source is more often an extension than Edge itself.

A stale permission, cached script, or corrupted site setting can make a previously working page fail after its resources change.

In Chrome or Edge, open the affected site, select the controls beside the address bar, open the site’s permissions or site-data settings, and delete the stored data for that site. Alternatively, use Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data and clear cached images and files.
Clearing cookies may sign you out and remove saved preferences. Reload the site after clearing data and test it before deleting data for every website.
7. Update the browser and extensions
Install pending browser updates, then update the blocking extension and its filter lists. In Chromium browsers, open chrome://extensions or the equivalent extensions page, enable Developer mode if necessary, and select Update. Do not install an extension from an unofficial download site simply because it claims to fix the error.

Some antivirus products inspect web traffic or block advertising, tracking, scripts, and suspicious domains. Temporarily pause the product’s web shield only long enough to test the page. If the error stops, create a narrowly scoped exception or contact the security vendor for guidance.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make an unfamiliar website load. If the blocked resource is reported as malicious, leave it blocked and investigate the site instead.
9. Inspect the hosts file if every browser is affected
If the same resource is blocked in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, a browser extension is less likely. A hosts-file block or security application may be responsible.

/etc/hostsOnly remove an entry if you know which application created it. Ad-blocking tools often maintain these entries deliberately. After making a legitimate change, flush DNS:
Windows: ipconfig /flushdns
macOS: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

When the website owner must fix it
A site owner may need to change the resource URL, hosting arrangement, or page code if an essential file is routinely classified as an advertisement or tracker. Renaming a file alone is not a reliable solution, and deliberately bypassing users’ security tools can create trust and maintenance problems.
If the page fails for many users, the owner should check the browser’s blocked URL, the Network tab’s request details, Content Security Policy errors, and whether the resource is being served from a reputable HTTPS domain.
Quickest fix
- Open the page in a private window.
- If it works, disable extensions one at a time.
- Allowlist the site in the responsible blocker, or leave the resource blocked if the page still works.
- If every browser fails, check browser shields, security software, and the hosts file.
- Clear site data and update the browser if the problem began after a site or browser change.
FAQ
Is ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT caused by my internet connection?
Usually not. It normally means the browser or software on your device blocked a web request. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, browser shields, antivirus tools, and hosts-file rules are common causes.
Does ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT mean the website is dangerous?
No. The error only says that a client-side rule blocked a request. The request may be an ordinary advertisement or analytics call, although you should investigate a resource that security software specifically identifies as malicious.

Why does the error appear only in Developer Tools?
Many blocked requests are optional resources such as ads, tracking pixels, or social widgets. The browser reports them in the Console even when the main page continues to work.
How do I fix it without disabling my ad blocker?
Keep the blocker enabled and allowlist only the affected website, or adjust the specific rule if your blocker shows one. If the blocked resource is optional, no fix is necessary.
Why does the page work in Incognito but not in a normal window?
An extension enabled in the normal browser profile is probably blocking the request. Disable extensions one at a time to identify it.
