Seeing Secure System in Task Manager is usually normal. It is a Windows process representation for the isolated security environment created by Virtualization-based Security (VBS) and Virtual Secure Mode (VSM). Features such as Memory integrity and, on supported editions, Credential Guard can cause it to appear.
It is not normally a third-party program, and its presence does not by itself indicate malware, a rootkit, Hyper-V, WSL, an Android emulator, or another virtual machine. The useful checks are to confirm that Windows security features are responsible and look for other signs of compromise—not to end the process.
What is Secure System in Task Manager?
Secure System represents Windows’ protected security environment. VBS uses the Windows hypervisor to create an isolated virtual environment separate from the normal Windows kernel. Security-sensitive functions can run there with stronger protection against tampering.

Memory integrity, also called Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI), performs kernel-mode code-integrity checks inside that isolated environment. It also restricts certain types of kernel-memory allocation that could otherwise be abused by malicious or vulnerable drivers.

Task Manager can display this protected environment as a process with its own process ID and memory usage. Microsoft also includes Secure System in example output for the tasklist command, so the name is not inherently suspicious.
Why did it suddenly appear?
The most common explanation is that a Windows update, hardware change, security recommendation, or policy change enabled a virtualization-based protection feature. Check these features first:
- Memory integrity in Windows Security.
- Credential Guard, where supported. Microsoft limits Credential Guard to Windows Enterprise and Education editions.
- Other VBS configuration applied by an organization through Group Policy or device management.
Memory integrity can also appear on Windows Home. You do not need Windows Server, Enterprise, or Education—and you do not need to have installed Hyper-V, WSL, or an emulator—for Secure System to be present. Those products may use virtualization infrastructure, but they are not the only explanation.
How to check whether Memory integrity is enabled
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security → Windows Security.
- Select Open Windows Security.
- Choose Device security.
- Open Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity switch.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security → Windows Security.
- Select Open Windows Security.
- Choose Device security → Core isolation details.
- Check Memory integrity.
The exact Settings entry point can vary slightly by Windows build, but the Windows Security app is the authoritative place to inspect the toggle. The Device security page may also show Security processor, Secure boot, Data encryption, and Hardware security capability. Which sections appear depends on the Windows version and the computer’s hardware.
Memory integrity requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If the switch cannot operate normally, check the firmware virtualization setting as well as driver compatibility.
How to verify the process
Use Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Open the Details tab.
- Find Secure System and note the PID column.
The PID is variable; there is no special fixed number that every computer should show. A normal instance may use roughly 100–300 MB of RAM while showing little or no CPU, disk, or network activity. That range is only an example, not a malware test or a hard limit. Usage varies with the Windows build, hardware, and protections enabled.

List it from Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt and run:
tasklist
Microsoft documents Secure System as a normal entry in process-list output. To see the command’s available options, run:
tasklist /?
Inspect VBS status with System Information
- Press Win + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Summary, look for Virtualization-based security.
- Also check VBS-related entries such as Hypervisor enforced Code Integrity or Credential Guard.
These entries help explain why Secure System is present. They are more useful than judging the process by its memory number alone.
Is Secure System malware?
The name alone is not evidence of malware, a rootkit, or a hijacked process. Windows itself creates the protected environment and exposes it in process listings.
Be cautious if your investigation finds something different from the normal Windows representation—for example, an unrelated executable launched from a user-writable folder such as a temporary directory or a user’s profile, unexpected startup persistence, an unknown publisher, or other security alerts. Some systems associate the displayed item with core kernel components such as ntoskrnl.exe. That does not mean Secure System is an independently launched copy of that file.
Do not treat a right-click path in Task Manager as conclusive proof either. Secure System is not an ordinary application process with a normal standalone executable workflow. Confirm the VBS status in Windows Security and System Information, then run a Microsoft Defender scan if you have additional warning signs.

If Task Manager shows high CPU, disk, or network use, investigate the other processes responsible for that activity rather than assuming Secure System is the cause. A normal Secure System instance commonly uses memory while remaining close to idle in the other activity columns.
What if Memory integrity causes problems?
Memory integrity can expose incompatible kernel drivers and applications. A device may stop working, an older driver may fail to load, or—rarely—enabling the feature may cause a boot failure or blue screen. Windows can also block known vulnerable drivers.
On Windows 11, the Microsoft vulnerable-driver blocklist is enabled when Memory integrity, Smart App Control, or Windows S mode is enabled. If a driver will not load, use this order of operations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Install pending updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Install an updated driver from the device manufacturer’s support site.
- Check Device Manager for the affected device and update its driver there if appropriate.
- Update or remove the application or hardware that depends on the incompatible driver.
Disabling Memory integrity may restore compatibility, but it reduces protection against malicious or vulnerable kernel code. On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Windows Security warns when Memory integrity is turned off; the warning can also appear on the taskbar Windows Security icon and in Windows Notification Center.
How to disable Memory integrity temporarily
If Windows is stable and you are troubleshooting a known incompatible driver, use the same Windows Security path:
Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details → turn Memory integrity off.

Restart if Windows requests it, test the affected hardware or application, and then install a compatible driver before turning the protection back on. Do not disable the feature merely because Secure System uses RAM.
Managed computers and Group Policy
If the setting keeps reverting or is unavailable, an organization may be enforcing VBS. The current Group Policy location is:
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Device Guard → Turn on Virtualization Based Security
Although “Device Guard” remains in the policy path, Microsoft no longer uses it as the active product name. Set the policy to Enabled, then configure Virtualization Based Protection of Code Integrity as Enabled without UEFI lock or Enabled with UEFI lock.
After a new domain policy is configured, Microsoft documents this elevated Command Prompt command for applying it without restarting:
gpupdate /force
Be careful with the UEFI-lock option. If Memory integrity is enabled with UEFI lock, Microsoft states that disabling it later requires access to the computer’s UEFI/BIOS menu and disabling Secure Boot. That is substantially different from the without-UEFI-lock configuration, which can be changed through policy or Windows settings.

Bottom line
Secure System is normally a legitimate Windows representation of the isolated environment used by VBS/VSM. Check Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details → Memory integrity, and use msinfo32 to confirm VBS-related status. A variable PID and moderate RAM use are expected; ending the item is not.
Investigate further only when the entry is accompanied by unrelated executable details, unexpected persistence, security alerts, or other signs of compromise. If Memory integrity creates a hardware or driver problem, update the driver or affected software first, and treat disabling the feature as a temporary compatibility measure rather than a routine fix.
FAQ
Is Secure System a real Windows process?
Yes. Windows can display Secure System as a process representation for the VBS/VSM isolated security environment. Microsoft also includes it in example tasklist output.
How much RAM should Secure System use?
A Microsoft moderator gives approximately 100–300 MB as a normal example, often with 0% CPU and no disk or network activity. It is not a fixed limit; usage varies by build, hardware, and enabled security features.
Does Secure System mean I installed Hyper-V or WSL?
No. Hyper-V, WSL, emulators, and virtual machines can use virtualization, but Secure System is primarily explained by VBS features such as Memory integrity and Credential Guard. Those features can be enabled without installing those products.
Can I delete or end Secure System?
No. It is not an ordinary application process, and Microsoft does not provide a supported End task procedure. If necessary, inspect or change Memory integrity through Windows Security instead.
Is Memory integrity available on Windows Home?
Yes. Memory integrity and the Secure System representation are not restricted to Enterprise, Education, or Server editions. Credential Guard has separate edition requirements and is available on Enterprise and Education.
