The Steam client can show “No Internet Connection” even when websites load normally. That is because Steam’s desktop client does not connect to your account in exactly the same way as a web browser. A successful sign-in at steampowered.com is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the client can reach Steam’s services.
Work through these fixes in order. The first steps separate a Steam outage from a problem on your PC; the later ones address firewalls, VPNs, DNS, and damaged client data.
1. Check whether Steam is experiencing an outage
Before changing Windows settings, check whether the problem affects Steam itself. Steam maintenance, regional service problems, or an ISP issue can produce the same message as a local connection failure.
- Check the Steam status page and Steam’s official announcements.
- Ask someone on a different connection whether Steam is working.
- Try a phone hotspot for a short test. If Steam connects through the hotspot but not your home network, the problem is probably your router, ISP, DNS, or network filtering—not your Steam account.
Steam’s own support guidance notes that persistent connection problems may involve maintenance, the local network, or the ISP. Do not assume every “No Internet Connection” error is caused by the Steam installation.

2. Fully restart Steam, your PC, and the router
Closing the Steam window may leave Steam processes running in the background. A complete restart clears a stuck client session and renews the computer’s network connection.
- Exit Steam with Steam → Exit.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- End any remaining Steam Client WebHelper or Steam Client Bootstrapper processes.
- Restart Windows.
- Unplug your router and modem for about 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the connection to return.
- Open Steam again.
If other devices also lost internet access, fix the network before troubleshooting Steam further.
3. Test Steam on another network
This is one of the fastest ways to identify the failing part. Connect the PC to a phone hotspot or another trusted network, then launch Steam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Result | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Steam works on the hotspot | Home router, ISP, DNS, VPN, or network-level filtering |
| Steam fails on both networks | Steam client, Windows firewall/security software, or the PC’s network configuration |
| Only one Steam feature fails | A service-specific issue, such as downloads, Community, or the store |
Testing the Steam website alone is not equivalent. Valve specifically says the Steam client accesses the account differently from a web browser.
4. Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, and filtering software
VPN clients, corporate proxies, DNS filters, traffic monitors, and some antivirus products can block or reroute Steam connections. Steam lists third-party software conflicts as a possible cause of client connection problems.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Disconnect any VPN.
- In Windows, open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy and turn off a manual proxy unless your network requires it.
- Temporarily pause web protection or network inspection in third-party antivirus software.
- Restart Steam and test again.
Do not leave security software disabled permanently. If disabling it solves the problem, re-enable it and add Steam to that product’s allowed applications instead. Test one change at a time so you know which program caused the conflict.
5. Allow Steam through Windows Firewall
A firewall rule can block the client while ordinary web browsing continues to work.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Press Win+R, type
control firewall.cpl, and press Enter. - Select Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Choose Change settings.
- Make sure Steam is allowed on the network types you actually use, usually Private. If you use public Wi-Fi, check whether the network profile is appropriate before enabling access.
- If Steam is not listed, select Allow another app and browse to the Steam installation folder, commonly
C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteam.exe.
Third-party security suites have their own firewall rules, so allowing Steam in Windows Firewall may not be enough. Never create a blanket rule that allows every program.
6. Repair the Windows network connection
If other applications are also having trouble, repair Windows networking rather than modifying Steam files first.
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings.
- Disable and re-enable the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter.
- Open Network troubleshooter if it is available on your Windows version.
- As a last Windows-level step, use Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset, then restart the PC. This removes and reinstalls network adapters and may require you to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Some troubleshooting guides recommend commands such as ipconfig /flushdns or netsh winsock reset. They can be legitimate Windows diagnostics in the right situation, but Steam’s current support page does not document them as official fixes for this error. Treat them as operating-system troubleshooting, not Steam-endorsed remedies.

7. Try a different DNS server
DNS problems can prevent Steam from resolving service addresses even though some websites still load. This is especially worth testing when Steam works on a mobile hotspot but not on your normal connection.
- Open Settings → Network & internet and select Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open the connected network’s properties and edit DNS server assignment.
- Choose Manual, enable IPv4, and enter either
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1, or8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4. - Save the change, restart Steam, and test.
If this makes no difference, restore the setting to automatic. DNS will not fix a Steam outage, a blocked firewall connection, or a failed ISP route.
8. Update Steam and Windows
An outdated client or unsupported Windows installation can cause connection and sign-in problems.
- Restart Steam and allow it to install any pending client update.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install available updates.
- Restart the PC after updating.
The current Steam client supports Windows 10 and newer; support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ended on January 1, 2024. Guides that tell users to solve this error with Windows 7 or Windows 8-specific steps may no longer apply to the supported client.
9. Clear Steam’s download cache, then repair or reinstall the client
A damaged download cache can interfere with content-server connections and updates. It is not a universal repair for account sign-in, but it is a reasonable final client-side step.

- Open Steam, if the interface is available.
- Go to Steam → Settings → Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm. Steam may sign you out.
- Sign in again and test the connection.
If Steam still cannot connect, reinstall the Steam client. Back up important saves first, especially games that do not use Steam Cloud. Keep the steamapps folder if possible so you do not have to download every game again, and download the installer from Steam’s official page.
Do not randomly delete Steam folders or rely on old instructions for steam://flushconfig unless a current Valve document specifically directs you to do so. Valve’s current support material does not list that command as an official fix for this error.
When to contact Steam Support
Use the current support route: Steam Support → Steam Client or other Steam Features → I can’t sign in to the Steam Client. Steam directs connection problems to its Troubleshooting Network Connectivity FAQ and maintains a separate Programs Which May Interfere with Steam FAQ.
Include the exact error, when it began, whether a hotspot works, your Windows version, and which steps you tried. Steam’s support flow also allows screenshots and files to be attached, so capture the error before submitting the request.

FAQ
Why does Steam say there is no internet when my browser works?
The Steam client and a web browser use different connection paths and services. Browser access proves that some internet traffic works, but it does not prove that the Steam client can reach the Steam Network.

Will Steam Offline Mode fix the no-internet error?
No. Offline Mode is a separate feature that lets supported games run without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time. It does not restore online connectivity, downloads, multiplayer, or store access. Find it through Steam Support → Steam Client or other Steam Features → Offline mode → Offline Mode FAQ.
Should I use steam://flushconfig to repair Steam?
Steam’s current support pages do not document steam://flushconfig as an official fix for this error. Prefer the supported steps above, such as checking network causes, clearing the download cache from Steam Settings, updating the client, or contacting Steam Support.
What is the quickest test for a router or ISP problem?
Connect the computer to a phone hotspot and try Steam. If Steam works there, investigate the home router, DNS, ISP, VPN, or network filtering. If it fails on both connections, focus on the PC, Steam, firewall, or security software.
The Bottom Line
Start by checking Steam’s status and testing a different network. Then restart the client and router, remove VPN or firewall interference, repair Windows networking, try DNS changes, update Windows and Steam, and clear Steam’s download cache. Offline Mode is not an online repair. If the error persists across multiple networks, use Steam Support’s “I can’t sign in to the Steam Client” route and attach a screenshot of the message.
