Lunar Client supports user-installed Fabric mods for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 and newer. The safest setup is to create a Fabric profile, add the mod through that profile’s Mods tab, and verify that the mod matches both your Minecraft version and loader.
You can also install supported mods from Lunar Client’s Explore page or import complete Modrinth modpacks. Forge and NeoForge modpacks can be imported, but Lunar’s built-in Forge module is not a general-purpose way to run arbitrary Forge mods.
Before installing a mod
Check these details on the mod’s official Modrinth, CurseForge, or project page:
- Minecraft version: It must match the version selected in your Lunar profile.
- Loader: For manually added mods, use a Fabric version unless the modpack specifically requires Forge or NeoForge.
- Edition: Lunar Client runs Minecraft Java Edition mods, not Bedrock Edition add-ons.
- Dependencies: The mod may require Fabric API or another library.
A Fabric mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 is not automatically compatible with 1.20.4, and a Fabric .jar cannot normally be used in a Forge or NeoForge profile. Download the mod from a source you trust and avoid files that are actually installers, source archives, shader packs, or resource packs.

Method 1: Add a Fabric mod manually
1. Create or select a compatible profile
- Open the Lunar Client Launcher.
- Click Create Profile, or select an existing profile that you want to modify.
- If you are creating a profile from scratch, choose Wizard.
- Click Select Game Version.
- Choose Fabric, then select the Minecraft version required by the mod. Lunar’s supported custom-mod workflow applies to Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer.
- Select Lunar Client if you want Lunar features, cosmetics, and related client functionality enabled.
- Finish creating the profile, or open the existing profile.
Do not choose Vanilla for a Fabric mod. Also remember that selecting Lunar Client features is separate from selecting the Fabric loader.
2. Open the profile’s Mods tab
- Click the profile’s gear icon.
- Open the Mods tab.
- Drag the downloaded mod’s
.jarfile into the launcher window. - Leave the mod’s Enabled option selected.
- Install any dependency requested by the launcher or the mod’s documentation.
- Launch the profile.
The Mods tab also includes a folder icon. Use it to open the actual mods directory for the selected Lunar profile. This is more reliable than guessing that Lunar uses your standard Minecraft directory.
Lunar may already bundle components such as Fabric API, Sodium, Replay Mod, Noxesium, Iris, or Phosphor, depending on the Minecraft version and profile. Do not add duplicate copies unless Lunar or the mod specifically requires one.

- Disable it: Clear the mod’s Enabled checkbox in the Mods tab.
- Remove it: Open the mod’s … menu and choose Uninstall Mod.
- Open the files: Click the folder icon and remove or inspect the corresponding file in the profile’s mods directory.
Method 2: Install a mod from Explore
Lunar’s Explore page can browse content from Modrinth and CurseForge. This method is useful when you want Lunar to handle dependencies and place the files in the correct profile.
- Open the Lunar Client Launcher.
- Click the blocks icon on the left side to open Explore.
- Use the content selector in the top-left and choose Mods.
- Select CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Find the mod and click the green Install button.
- Select the compatible profile.
- Choose a mod version. Prefer versions marked Recommended.
- Click Next.
- Review the listed dependencies, then click Install.
The mod’s appearance in Explore does not guarantee that it will work with every Lunar profile. Confirm the selected Minecraft version and loader before installing. A mod can still conflict with Lunar, another mod, or a required library.
Method 3: Install a listed modpack
- Open Explore or the launcher’s profile and modpack area.
- Select Modpacks.
- Choose a modpack.
- Click Install & Play, or open its settings first if you want to edit its contents.
- In the modpack settings, enable or disable available mods and change versions where the launcher permits it.
- Launch the installed profile.
Lunar’s curated modpacks are sourced from Modrinth. A modpack may use Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, so do not assume that its loader is Fabric just because manually installed Lunar mods normally use Fabric.

Import a Modrinth .mrpack file
- Download the
.mrpackfile from a trusted project page. - Open the launcher’s Modpacks area.
- Drag the
.mrpackfile into the launcher. - Click Install Modpack.
- Open the resulting profile’s settings if you need to adjust mods, the game version, or Lunar features.
- Launch the profile.
Current Lunar releases can also import profiles or modpacks from services and launchers including CurseForge, Prism, MultiMC, GDLauncher, ATLauncher, and Dawn. Dawn pack files can be imported by dragging them into the launcher or, where supported, double-clicking them.

Use Lunar features with a modded profile
When you create or install a profile, Lunar may show a Use Lunar Features option. This controls whether Lunar’s client features, cosmetics, and related functionality are active for that profile.
If a modded profile crashes or behaves incorrectly while this option is enabled:
- Open the profile settings with the gear icon.
- Find Use Lunar Features.
- Disable it.
- Launch the profile again.
This can make the profile behave more like a standard modded Minecraft installation, but Lunar-specific features may no longer be available.
Forge and NeoForge: an important limitation
Lunar’s older built-in Forge module is not equivalent to installing a normal Forge instance and adding any mods you want. Lunar’s documentation states that arbitrary user-provided Forge mods cannot be added to that module.

That support mainly applies to compatible imported or installed modpacks. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that a random Forge or NeoForge .jar can be dropped into a Lunar profile and run.

For a Forge or NeoForge project, use the loader and installation method specified by the modpack or project author. Do not put a Fabric mod into a Forge profile or treat Fabric, Forge, Quilt, and NeoForge as interchangeable.
Fix Lunar Client mod problems
“Unexpected Error” or a crash during launch
An incompatible or faulty mod is a common cause. Disable or remove recently added mods one at a time, launching the profile after each change. When the profile starts normally, the last disabled file is a likely cause. Check its version and dependencies before reinstalling it.
If the cause is not clear, preserve the relevant logs and contact Lunar support.

Incompatible-version or dependency message
If Lunar displays Show Conflicts, open it. The launcher may identify the conflicting mod or tell you which dependency version needs changing. Common causes include:
- The mod targets a different Minecraft version.
- A Fabric mod was placed in a Forge or NeoForge profile.
- A required dependency is missing.
- Two mods require incompatible versions of the same library.
The mod is installed but does not load
- Confirm that you are launching the profile where the mod was installed.
- Verify that the profile uses Fabric, rather than Vanilla or Forge.
- Compare the mod’s Minecraft version with the profile’s exact version.
- Make sure the file is a mod
.jar, not a ZIP, installer, source archive, shader, or resource pack. - Check that the mod is enabled in the Mods tab.
- Install all dependencies in the same profile.
Update Lunar Client before doing extensive troubleshooting. Recent launcher fixes addressed cases where installed mods were not shown in the Mods tab even though they worked, and cases where files added directly to custom game directories did not refresh correctly.
Dragging the file does nothing
Update Lunar Client first. Recent releases fixed drag-and-drop failures across launcher drop zones, including a Windows-specific issue.

If drag-and-drop still fails, open the profile settings, click the profile’s folder icon, copy the .jar directly into that profile’s mods folder, and reopen the Mods tab.
The mod is in %appdata%.minecraftmods, but Lunar cannot see it
Lunar may use a profile-specific or custom game directory instead of the directory used by the standard Minecraft Launcher. Open the selected profile’s settings and use its folder icon to locate the correct mods directory. Copying files into the ordinary %appdata%.minecraftmods folder is therefore not a universal solution.
Mods disappear after a modpack update
Update Lunar Client. Recent fixes addressed modpack updates removing user-added mods, resource packs, and shaders. Even with the fix, back up important profile files before updating a heavily customized modpack.
The profile launches as plain Vanilla
Check the profile’s selected loader and Minecraft version. Make sure you are launching the Fabric or modpack profile rather than a separate Vanilla profile. Also update Lunar Client; recent releases fixed cases where Fabric profiles and modpacks launched as plain Vanilla when Lunar features were disabled.
A Forge or NeoForge modpack crashes immediately
Update Lunar Client before replacing the modpack. Recent releases included fixes for Forge and NeoForge modpacks that crashed immediately or launched with the wrong loader version. If the problem remains, check the modpack’s required Minecraft and loader versions.

| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Fabric install | One or a few trusted .jar mods |
You must verify versions and dependencies yourself |
| Explore | Installing a Modrinth or CurseForge mod into an existing profile | Listing a mod does not guarantee compatibility |
| Listed modpack | Installing a complete tested collection | Its loader and included versions are determined by the pack |
.mrpack import |
Using a modpack downloaded outside Lunar | The pack may require profile adjustments or a different loader |
Bottom line
For a standalone mod, create a Lunar Fabric profile for Minecraft 1.16.5 or newer, open its gear icon, and add the matching .jar from the Mods tab. Use Explore when you want Lunar to install a listed mod and its dependencies, or import a .mrpack when you are using a complete Modrinth modpack.

Always check the exact Minecraft version, loader, dependencies, and profile directory. The most common mistakes are using the wrong loader, installing a mod for a different game version, placing the file in the standard Minecraft folder instead of Lunar’s profile folder, and assuming that Lunar’s Forge module supports arbitrary Forge mods.
FAQ
Can Lunar Client use custom mods?
Yes. Lunar Client supports user-provided Fabric mods for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 and newer. The mod must match the profile’s exact Minecraft version and use the Fabric loader.
Where do I put mods in Lunar Client?
Open the profile’s settings with the gear icon, go to the Mods tab, and drag the mod’s .jar file into the launcher. You can also click the folder icon to open the correct profile-specific mods directory.
Can I use Forge mods with Lunar Client?
Do not assume you can add arbitrary Forge mods to Lunar’s built-in Forge module; Lunar says that this is not supported. Forge and NeoForge support in the current launcher primarily applies to compatible imported or installed modpacks.
Do I need to install Fabric API manually?
Not always. Some Lunar Fabric profiles already bundle Fabric API or other components, and Explore can install dependencies. Check the profile’s installed content and the mod’s dependency requirements before adding another copy.
Why is my Lunar mod installed but not working?
Confirm that you launched the correct profile, selected Fabric, matched the exact Minecraft version, enabled the mod, used a .jar file, and installed its dependencies. If Lunar shows Show Conflicts, open it to identify version or dependency problems.
Can I install CurseForge mods in Lunar Client?
You can browse CurseForge through Explore and install compatible entries into a selected profile. However, a CurseForge listing does not guarantee compatibility with Lunar, your loader, or your Minecraft version.
The Bottom Line
Use Fabric for individual Lunar Client mods: select the matching Minecraft version, add the mod from the profile’s Mods tab, and verify dependencies. Use Explore or modpack import for larger collections, and use the profile’s folder icon whenever you need to inspect the actual files.
