Windows 11 can send audio to built-in speakers, wired headphones, a USB headset, a monitor, or a Bluetooth device. The quickest way to change the destination is through Quick Settings, but Settings > System > Sound gives you more control over default devices, app-specific routing, enhancements, and audio formats.
Change the audio output from Quick Settings
Use this method when you simply want to switch all current system audio to another connected device.
- Select the Speakers icon on the right side of the Windows 11 taskbar. This opens Quick Settings.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider. The tooltip should say Select a sound output.
- Select the headphones, speakers, monitor, or other output device you want to use.
- Adjust the volume slider and confirm that the speaker icon is not muted.
Windows immediately routes system audio to the selected device. If the device does not appear, make sure it is connected and powered on, then see the troubleshooting sections below.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Change the output device in Windows 11 Settings
The Settings app shows the same output choices as Quick Settings and is useful when you need to inspect a device’s properties.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound. You can also press
Windows + Iand select Sound. - Under Output, select the device you want to use.
- Use the volume control on the device page to set the output level.
Selecting a device under Output also makes it the default playback device. This means Windows uses it for system sounds and for applications that follow the Windows default.
Set headphones as the default playback device
If Windows keeps switching back to speakers, set the headphones explicitly in the classic playback-device interface:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings.
- Open the Playback tab.
- Right-click the headphones.
- Select Set as default.
If the headphones are disabled, right-click them and choose Enable first. You can also open Properties, select the Levels tab, and check that the device is not muted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSend only one app’s audio to the headphones
Windows allows an application to use a different output from the system default. This is useful if, for example, you want a game in your headset while music continues through speakers.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the application.
- Set its Output device to the headphones or another connected device.
- Check the app’s individual volume slider and confirm it is not muted.
If the application is already running, close and reopen it after changing its output. Some programs do not detect a new playback device until they restart.

When the headphones do not appear
If Windows shows No audio output device is installed, or the headphones are missing from the Output list, the problem may involve a disabled device, a missing driver, or a hardware connection.
Check the connection
- For wired headphones, push the plug firmly into the headphone or line-out jack, not a microphone jack.
- If the headphones use USB, try a different USB port.
- For Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are powered on, paired, and connected rather than merely remembered by Windows.
- Unplug the headphones and test the speakers. If the speakers work, the issue is more likely related to the headphone connection or device selection.
Enable or rediscover the device
- Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device. If Enable device is available, select it.
- If the device is missing, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
If the driver is missing or incompatible, download the current Windows 11 audio driver from the computer manufacturer or sound-card manufacturer. Install it and restart the PC. Avoid using a driver intended for a different model unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.

If Windows system sounds work but a specific app is silent, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Check all three app-level controls:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The app is not muted.
- The app’s volume slider is above zero.
- The app’s Output device is the headphones or the device you intended.
Applications can retain an old output selection even after you change the Windows default. Close the app completely and reopen it. If that does not help, restart the audio services: press Windows + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart, then do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
Bluetooth headphones connected but silent
A Bluetooth headset can show as connected while Windows continues sending sound to another device. Go to Settings > System > Sound and select the Bluetooth headphones under Output.
If the headset is connected but audio is missing, low quality, or repeatedly disconnects, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Also check that the headphones are not connected to another phone or computer, since many models switch their active audio connection automatically.
Run Windows 11’s audio troubleshooter
For a general diagnosis, open the Get Help app and run the automated audio troubleshooter. Windows can check the selected output, volume settings, services, and common driver problems.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windows 11 versus the old Control Panel method
The primary Windows 11 route is Settings > System > Sound, not Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. The older Control Panel interface has not disappeared completely: More sound settings > Playback still opens the classic list for enabling devices and setting a default.
The procedure is the same on Windows 11 Home and Pro. There is no separate output-selection process based on the edition.
