To change the keyboard on an Amazon Fire tablet, you must do two separate things: enable the keyboard in Fire OS and then choose it as the current keyboard. Installing a keyboard app alone does not activate it.
The menu names vary between Fire tablet generations and Fire OS versions. Start with Settings → Device Options → Keyboard & Language. If that option is not present, try Settings → System → Language & Input.
Before you start
There are two different kinds of keyboard you might want to change:

- Physical keyboard: a Bluetooth or USB keyboard. Its layout and hardware options are controlled separately in Fire OS.
The steps below apply to on-screen keyboards such as keyboards installed from the Amazon Appstore or from an APK.

Install a keyboard from the Amazon Appstore
- Open the Amazon Appstore on your Fire tablet.
- Search for the keyboard you want to use.
- Open the keyboard app’s listing and tap Get or Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
You do not need to enable sideloading permissions when installing the app directly through the Amazon Appstore. However, the keyboard will normally remain disabled until you turn it on in Fire OS settings.
Install a keyboard APK
Use an APK only when you trust its source and the APK is compatible with your Fire tablet and Fire OS version. Keyboard apps can potentially process everything you type, so avoid downloading them from unknown sites.
- Download the keyboard APK using Silk Browser or another browser.
- Open the downloaded APK from the browser’s downloads list or from a file manager.
- If Fire OS blocks the installation, open Settings.
- Go to Security & Privacy or Security.
- Find Apps from Unknown Sources or Install Unknown Apps.
- Allow installation for the browser or file-manager app that will open the APK.
- Return to the APK and tap it again.
- Follow the installation prompts.
The permission is granted to a particular app, not necessarily to the whole tablet. For example, allowing Silk Browser to install an APK does not automatically allow a file manager to do the same.
Enable the new keyboard
After installation, open the keyboard settings. On many current Fire tablets, use:
Settings → Device Options → Keyboard & Language

On other models, the route is:
Settings → System → Language & Input
Inside that section, look for one of these labels:
- Current Keyboard
- On-Screen Keyboard
- Manage Keyboards
- Open the keyboard-management screen.
- Find the keyboard you installed.
- Turn on the switch beside it.
- Read the warning and tap OK, Enable, or the equivalent confirmation button.
Fire OS displays a warning because an input method may be able to process typed text, including passwords. Only enable a keyboard from a developer and source you trust.
Set it as the active keyboard
Enabling a keyboard does not necessarily select it. Return to the language and input area and open Current Keyboard or Default Keyboard. Select the newly enabled keyboard from the list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe change should normally take effect immediately. A restart is not required for every keyboard change, although restarting can help if the new keyboard does not appear or Fire OS switches back to the Amazon keyboard.
Switch keyboards while typing
- Open an app with a text field, such as Silk Browser or Notes.
- Tap inside the text field so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the keyboard icon in the navigation bar, if one is shown.
- Select the keyboard you want to use.
Depending on the keyboard and Fire OS version, you may instead need to tap a keyboard or globe key on the keyboard, or press and hold the space bar. The available switch method is not identical on every Fire tablet.
If no keyboard-switch icon appears, check that at least two keyboards are enabled. Fire OS may hide the selector when only one input method is active.

Confirm that the change worked
Open a second app containing a text field after selecting the keyboard. Silk Browser and Notes are useful tests. Tap the field and check that the expected keyboard appears rather than relying only on the settings screen.
Troubleshooting
The keyboard is installed but missing from the keyboard list
Check the following:
- The APK installation completed rather than stopping partway through.
- The tablet has enough free storage.
- The keyboard supports your Fire OS version and device architecture.
- You are checking the keyboard settings in the same profile where it was installed.
Restart the tablet, then check Keyboard & Language or Language & Input again. If it is still absent, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard using a compatible package.
The enable switch turns itself off
This can happen in a restricted child profile or when the installation is incompatible or corrupted. Switch to the adult profile, if appropriate, and check whether the keyboard can be enabled there. Then restart the tablet and reinstall the keyboard if necessary.
Fire OS keeps returning to Amazon’s keyboard
Go back to the keyboard settings and confirm both of these conditions:
- The third-party keyboard is still enabled.
- It is still selected under Current Keyboard or Default Keyboard.
A force-stopped keyboard, background restriction, system update, or older Fire OS behavior can cause the selection to revert. Restart the tablet, update the keyboard if an update is available, and reinstall it if the problem continues.

The keyboard works in one profile but not another
Fire tablet profiles do not always share keyboard availability and settings. A keyboard installed or enabled in the adult profile may not be available in a child profile. Restricted profiles can also prevent a keyboard from remaining enabled.
I want to change the layout of a physical keyboard
Bluetooth and USB keyboards are managed separately from the on-screen keyboard. Pair or connect the physical keyboard first, then look for physical-keyboard or hardware-keyboard options in the tablet’s language and input settings. The exact labels depend on the Fire OS build and tablet model.
Fire tablet keyboard settings at a glance
| Task | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Install from Amazon | Amazon Appstore → search → Get or Download |
| Allow an APK | Settings → Security & Privacy or Security → Apps from Unknown Sources or Install Unknown Apps |
| Open keyboard settings | Settings → Device Options → Keyboard & Language |
| Alternative settings path | Settings → System → Language & Input |
| Enable a keyboard | Manage Keyboards or On-Screen Keyboard |
| Choose the active keyboard | Current Keyboard or Default Keyboard |
Do not rely on a single menu path copied from another Fire tablet. Fire OS labels and locations differ by model and software version, and Settings → System → Language & Input → Keyboard & Input Method is not a universal path.

No. On-screen input methods and physical Bluetooth or USB keyboards use separate Fire OS settings.
