Most apps on an Amazon Fire HD tablet update through the Amazon Appstore. You can update them manually from the Appstore, enable automatic updates, or update one app when a particular feature or problem requires it.
Updating the tablet’s software is a separate process. App updates are managed in Appstore; Fire OS updates are managed through Settings > Device Options > System Updates.
Update apps manually on a Fire HD tablet
Use this method when you want to install available updates immediately.
- Connect the Fire HD tablet to Wi-Fi. App updates can consume a significant amount of data, especially for games and streaming apps.
- Open Appstore from the Home screen.
- Tap your profile icon or the account menu in the upper-right corner.
- Open App Updates, My Apps, or the equivalent updates section shown on your Fire OS version.
- Tap Update beside an individual app, or tap Update All if that option is available.
- Leave the tablet connected to Wi-Fi while the downloads and installations finish.
The wording and location of the updates screen can vary between Fire OS versions and tablet generations. If you cannot find an updates list, search for the app in the Appstore instead. Open its listing and tap Update when the button appears.

Update a single app from its Appstore listing
This is useful when one app is malfunctioning or you know that a particular update has been released.
- Open Appstore.
- Tap Search.
- Enter the name of the app, such as Netflix, Max, or Kindle.
- Select the correct app from the results.
- Tap Update.
If the button says Open rather than Update, the Appstore may consider the installed version current. It can also mean that the newest version is not available for that tablet, Fire OS version, or Amazon marketplace.
Turn on automatic app updates
Fire tablets can download updates automatically through the Amazon Appstore. The exact menu label differs by Fire OS version, but the setting is normally inside the Appstore’s account or settings menu.

- Tap the profile icon or account menu.
- Open Appstore Settings.
- Find Automatic Updates or Auto-update apps.
- Turn the setting on.
Automatic updates may wait for Wi-Fi, charging, or suitable battery level. An update may also be delayed if the tablet is low on storage, offline, restricted by a child profile, or unable to contact Amazon’s servers.
To avoid mobile-data charges on a Fire tablet with cellular connectivity, check whether the automatic-download setting allows updates over mobile data. Wi-Fi-only updating is the safer choice.
Update Fire OS separately
An app can fail to update because the tablet itself is running an old Fire OS version. Check for system updates with this path:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Device Options.
- Tap System Updates.
- Tap Check Now.
- Install the update if one is offered.
Keep the tablet connected to its charger or ensure that it has plenty of battery power. Restart the tablet after the Fire OS update, then check the Appstore again.
Fire OS compatibility matters. Amazon maps Fire OS 5, 6, 7, and 8 to different Android API levels, and developers can set minimum requirements for their apps. Consequently, an app may appear in the Appstore on a newer Fire HD 10 but not on an older Fire HD 8.
What to do when an app will not update
1. Check the internet connection
Open Silk or another installed app and load a website. If pages do not load, reconnect to Wi-Fi from Settings > Wi-Fi. You can also toggle Wi-Fi off and on, restart the router, and retry the update.
2. Check available storage
Large updates need temporary working space in addition to the final app size. Open Settings > Storage and remove downloads, unused games, or videos if the tablet is nearly full. Then restart the tablet and try again.
3. Restart the tablet
Hold the power button, choose Restart if shown, and wait for Fire OS to load completely. A restart can clear a stalled Appstore download or installation queue.

Amazon filters Appstore listings by tablet model, Fire OS version, hardware features, and marketplace. If an app has no Update or Download button, the latest release may not support your Fire HD model. Fire TV support does not prove that the same app supports Fire tablets.

5. Check the Amazon account and parental controls
Make sure the tablet is registered to the Amazon account that obtained the app. In an Amazon Kids child profile, an adult may need to approve or share the app from the parent profile. Amazon Kids controls can restrict apps by age, content type, screen time, or profile permissions.
6. Clear Appstore cache
If the Appstore opens but repeatedly fails to download updates, try clearing its temporary data:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & Notifications or Apps & Permissions.
- Tap Manage All Applications.
- Select Amazon Appstore.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache.
Restart the tablet and test the update. Menu names vary by Fire OS release. Avoid tapping Clear Data unless necessary, because it can reset the Appstore’s local settings and require sign-in or reconfiguration.
Why an app may be missing from the Appstore
Amazon Appstore availability is not universal across every Fire HD tablet. Common reasons include:

| The update starts and then fails | Low storage, unstable Wi-Fi, an interrupted Appstore process, or an account problem may be responsible. |
| The app installs but crashes | The new build may expose an older Fire OS, memory, graphics, or compatibility issue. |
Older tablets are especially affected. For example, Netflix’s current Fire-tablet guidance requires Fire OS 7 or later for its supported app experience. A tablet running an older Fire OS may therefore be unable to install or update Netflix even if the app is available on newer Fire HD models.
Should you install updates from APK websites?
Do not use a random APK website as the normal way to update Fire tablet apps. Sideloaded packages can be outdated, modified, incompatible with the tablet, or missing required Amazon or Google services. They can also cause sign-in, notifications, payment, location, or digital-rights-management failures.

adb install <APK_path>That is a developer-testing procedure, not a general consumer update method. For ordinary apps, use the Amazon Appstore or the service’s official web version in Silk when no compatible native app exists.
App updates versus web apps
Some services do not offer a native Fire-tablet app in every marketplace. Amazon Silk is preinstalled and can provide browser access to services such as YouTube, Gmail, Google Drive, and Khan Academy.
A Silk shortcut is not the same as a native app update. It may not provide background notifications, full account integration, offline downloads, or all features of an Android or iPad app. Google’s Amazon Appstore YouTube instructions apply to Fire TV; on Fire tablets, use Silk and visit youtube.com when the native app is unavailable.

- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Open Appstore and check the app update list.
- Search for an individual app if it is not listed under updates.
- Free storage if the update fails.
- Restart the tablet.
- Check Settings > Device Options > System Updates > Check Now.
- Confirm that the app supports your Fire HD model and Fire OS version.
- Use Amazon Kids’ parent profile if a child profile cannot update the app.

How do I update all apps on a Fire HD tablet?
Open Appstore, go to the updates or My Apps area, and tap Update All if that button is available. If it is not shown, update apps individually from their Appstore listings.
Are app updates and Fire OS updates the same thing?
No. App updates are handled by the Amazon Appstore. Fire OS updates are checked under Settings > Device Options > System Updates > Check Now.
Can I update Fire tablet apps without Wi-Fi?
