Instagram does not document a consumer command that jumps to the first message, opens a conversation at a specific date, or loads an “old messages” view. If you keep swiping upward, Instagram may eventually load earlier messages, but long conversations can take a great deal of time and may stop loading because of connection, app, or chat-history limits.
The practical alternative is to export available end-to-end encrypted chat data on a computer and read the downloaded files offline. This does not restore the conversation or move the Instagram chat window to an earlier point, but it can provide messages and attachments without manually scrolling.
Use Instagram’s encrypted-data download instead of scrolling
Instagram’s current documented route for retrieving older end-to-end encrypted messages is available on a computer, not in the mobile app:

- Click Menu in the lower-left corner.
- Open Your activity.
- Select Download end-to-end encrypted data.
- Click Next.
- Enter your Instagram password.
- Click Request download.
Instagram prepares the export, then starts the download in the browser when it is ready. Preparation may not be immediate, so do not close the account or assume that clicking the button produces an instant file.

What the export can contain
If Secure Storage is enabled, Instagram says the download can include end-to-end encrypted messages sent and received, along with attachments such as images, files, and other media. Depending on the export format, you may need to open the downloaded folder and inspect the included files rather than expect a readable conversation window.
Instagram may ask for your Secure Storage PIN if the computer or browser session is not authenticated. Keep that PIN available before starting the request.

How to read the downloaded files
- Wait for Instagram’s export to finish and download the resulting file from the browser.
- Save a copy before extracting it.
- On Windows, right-click the ZIP file and choose Extract All. On macOS, double-click the ZIP file.
- Open the extracted folders and look for the message or conversation data and any media folders.
- Use your computer’s search function to look for a username, phrase, filename, or date shown in the exported data.
The exact filenames and layout can change. If a file opens as raw JSON, HTML, or another structured format, use a text editor or browser to inspect it. A large export may be easier to search in a code editor than in a basic text editor.

What if Secure Storage is not enabled?
The encrypted-message export depends on Secure Storage. Instagram’s documentation describes downloading encrypted messages when Secure Storage is turned on. If the option is missing, unavailable, or does not include the chat you need, check that you are using Instagram on a computer, that you are signed into the correct account, and that the account’s Secure Storage setup is complete.
Do not confuse this control with older instructions that say to open Settings → Security → Download Data. Instagram’s currently documented encrypted-chat procedure uses the separate label Download end-to-end encrypted data under Your activity. Menus can vary by account, but old guides should not be treated as a guaranteed current path.

Why some old Instagram chats may be missing
Instagram has warned about a historical-chat issue related to its end-to-end-encryption transition. Some older encrypted chats may be unavailable after June 23, 2025. Affected conversations may contain instructions for downloading the messages or media that remain available. If Instagram tells you to update the app before downloading the material, install the current version and follow the notice in the conversation.
This means an export is not guaranteed to contain every message ever exchanged. It can only provide data that Instagram still makes available to your account.

Some versions of Instagram and third-party guides mention a Search option inside a conversation’s information panel. It may help locate text in some chats, but it is not a documented universal full-history search. There is no reliable basis for promising that it indexes every old message, accepts a date, or behaves the same way in every current app version.
If you see a search option, it is reasonable to try it:
- Open the relevant Instagram conversation.
- Open the conversation details or information panel.
- If Search is shown, enter a distinctive word or phrase.
- Check the result in the chat, but verify that it is the message you need.
Do not treat the absence of a result as proof that the message never existed. It may be outside the feature’s searchable range, formatted differently, deleted, or unavailable because of the encryption transition.

Why browser Find does not solve a long chat
Pressing Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS only searches text currently loaded in the browser page. Instagram’s web interface does not necessarily load the entire conversation at once. If older messages have not been fetched, browser Find cannot discover them.
The same limitation applies to scripts or browser extensions that merely scroll the page. They may automate swiping, but they cannot recover content that Instagram no longer supplies to the session, and giving an extension access to private messages creates a security and privacy risk.
Why the Instagram Graph API is not a solution for personal old DMs
The Instagram Graph API is intended for supported integrations and does not provide a general way to download an entire consumer Direct Message history. A documented message request has a form such as:
GET https://graph.instagram.com/v23.0/{message_id}?fields=id,created_time,from,to,messageThe API documentation says a conversation query can return message IDs, but message details are available only for the 20 most recent messages. Requesting an older message can produce an error indicating that the message was deleted. You also need the appropriate account type, permissions, access token, and integration setup. Installing an app that claims to bypass these restrictions is not a safe shortcut.
Deleted, unsent, and missing messages
Deleting a chat is not the same as unsending a message
Deleting a conversation from your inbox removes the chat from your view. Unsend is a message-level action that removes a sent message from visibility for people in the conversation, although someone may already have seen it. These actions should not be treated as interchangeable.

Unsent messages cannot be recovered through export
Instagram explicitly says that its downloaded account data does not include messages unsent from the account. An export therefore cannot be used to retrieve a message after you chose Unsend.
Recently Deleted has a limited window
Instagram says deleted Direct Messages move to Recently Deleted and are automatically deleted after 30 days. If a deleted item is still within that period, check Instagram’s Recently Deleted area rather than assuming that a data export will restore it. Once it is permanently removed, export is not a guaranteed recovery method.
Reports can contain deleted or unsent material
If a chat or nearby message is reported, Instagram says unsent messages may be included in the report. That does not make the material available as a normal message in your inbox, but it explains why a message can remain relevant to a report even after it is no longer visible in the conversation.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- The download option is missing: use a computer at Instagram.com and open Menu → Your activity, rather than relying on an old mobile-app guide.
- Instagram requests a PIN: enter the Secure Storage PIN if the device is not authenticated.
- The export contains no old chat: confirm that you requested the export for the correct account and remember that unavailable, deleted, or unsent content may not be included.
- An old encrypted chat displays a warning: follow the download instructions inside the chat and update Instagram if requested.
- The downloaded file looks unreadable: extract the ZIP completely and open the included structured files with a browser or text/code editor.
- The chat still loads slowly: use a stable connection and the latest Instagram app or browser, but do not expect that repeated scrolling can recover data Instagram no longer serves.
Bottom line
Instagram currently offers no documented “jump to first message,” “jump to date,” or “view old messages” command for consumer DMs. For a long conversation, request Instagram.com → Menu → Your activity → Download end-to-end encrypted data on a computer, provided Secure Storage is enabled. Use the resulting files for offline reference. Treat message search as an optional, version-dependent convenience—not a guaranteed full-history tool—and remember that unsent, permanently deleted, or affected legacy encrypted messages may not be recoverable.

Can I jump to the first message on Instagram?
Instagram does not document a consumer control that jumps to the first message or a selected date. You can scroll manually, try an available in-chat Search option, or request an encrypted-data export for offline reading.

How do I download old Instagram messages without scrolling?
On a computer, go to Instagram.com → Menu → Your activity → Download end-to-end encrypted data → Next, enter your password, and select Request download. Secure Storage must be enabled, and Instagram may also request your PIN.
Can Instagram data export recover unsent messages?
No. Instagram says messages unsent from the account are not included in the downloaded data.
Can I recover deleted Instagram DMs from an export?
Not reliably. Deleted Direct Messages are moved to Recently Deleted and are automatically deleted after 30 days. An export is not a guaranteed recovery method for permanently deleted content.
Does Instagram have an Archive folder for old DMs?
Do not rely on the profile-content Archive as a DM archive. Current official help information does not establish a universal Instagram “Archived messages” location for reading old Direct conversations.
Can the Instagram Graph API download my entire personal DM history?
No. The documented API is not a general consumer-history downloader. Although conversation queries can return message IDs, message details are limited to the 20 most recent messages in the documented endpoint behavior.
The Bottom Line
Use the computer export, not a supposed hidden jump command. Go to Instagram.com → Menu → Your activity → Download end-to-end encrypted data. Secure Storage is required, the result is an offline download rather than a restored chat, and Instagram cannot guarantee recovery of unsent, permanently deleted, or unavailable legacy messages.
