Windows 11 does not include a single supported CMD command that finds and installs every newer driver for every device. Command Prompt can scan for newly connected hardware, list installed driver packages, and install driver packages that you have already downloaded. It cannot reliably search every manufacturer’s website and choose the correct graphics, chipset, audio, Wi-Fi, and firmware packages automatically.
The safest command-line method is therefore:
- Identify devices and installed drivers.
- Download the correct driver package from the PC or device manufacturer.
- Install its
.infpackage withpnputil. - Restart and verify the result.
What CMD can do for Windows 11 drivers
Windows 11 stores driver packages in the Driver Store. The built-in pnputil.exe utility can work with that store from an elevated Command Prompt.

Run these commands from Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Without elevation, installation and export operations may fail with an access-denied message.

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
You can also press Win+X and select Terminal (Admin). To use the Command Prompt profile in Terminal, type cmd and press Enter.

2. Scan for hardware changes
To make Windows re-enumerate connected hardware, run:
pnputil /scan-devicesThis is useful after connecting a device or after installing a driver package. It is not an online driver update command. It does not download drivers from the internet, and a successful scan does not mean that newer drivers were installed.
3. Find devices with driver problems
Windows can list devices that currently report a problem:

pnputil /enum-devices /problemLook for the device instance, problem code, and any listed driver information. This is more useful than blindly replacing every driver, particularly when the computer is working normally.
For a fuller view of installed third-party packages, run:
pnputil /enum-driversThe output includes published names such as oem42.inf, the original INF name, provider, class, date, and version. The published name is an identifier in Windows; it is not necessarily the filename you should download or install manually.

4. Download the correct driver packages
Use the support page for the exact computer model or the manufacturer’s official device page. For a custom PC, obtain drivers from the motherboard, graphics-card, laptop, or peripheral manufacturer.
Check these details before downloading:
- Windows 11 compatibility
- 64-bit architecture
- Exact model or hardware ID
- Correct revision, if the device has one
- Whether the download is an installer, ZIP archive, or extracted INF package
Do not treat a random “driver updater” website as a source for system drivers. An incorrect chipset, storage, network, or display driver can cause boot failures, loss of networking, or instability.
5. Install a downloaded INF driver with CMD
Extract the downloaded package first if it is a ZIP file. Suppose the extracted files are in C:DriversIntelWiFi. If you know the relevant INF file, install it with:
pnputil /add-driver "C:DriversIntelWiFiNetwtw08.inf" /installTo search that folder and its subfolders for INF files, use:
pnputil /add-driver "C:DriversIntelWiFi*.inf" /subdirs /install/add-driver adds the package to the Driver Store. /install tells Windows to install it on matching devices. Windows still decides whether the package applies to the hardware; this command does not force an incompatible driver onto a device.
Some manufacturer downloads contain a setup program instead of directly usable INF files. In that case, run the vendor installer from CMD, for example:

6. Install every INF in a driver folder
If a manufacturer supplied a complete driver bundle and its documentation says the INF files can be installed directly, use:
pnputil /add-driver "C:DriversWindows11*.inf" /subdirs /installReview the output. PnPUtil may report that a package was added, that no matching device was found, or that the driver was not installed because a better or newer driver is already present.

7. Update one device instead of all devices
When only one device is broken, target its downloaded package rather than updating the entire system:
pnputil /add-driver "C:DriversAudioaudio.inf" /installThen scan again:
pnputil /scan-devicesRestart Windows if the installer or device requires it. A restart is particularly important for storage, chipset, graphics, Bluetooth, and network-driver changes.

8. Back up installed drivers before changing them
To export driver packages currently in the Driver Store to another disk, run:
mkdir "D:DriverBackup"
pnputil /export-driver * "D:DriverBackup"This creates a copy of installed packages; it does not create a full system image and does not guarantee that every vendor control panel or companion application is included. Use a drive that will still be available if Windows must be repaired.
Why a “update all drivers” CMD command does not exist
Drivers are supplied through several different channels: Windows Update, the PC manufacturer, the component manufacturer, and vendor-specific installers. Windows also uses hardware IDs, driver ranking, compatibility rules, and sometimes firmware dependencies when selecting a package.
For that reason, commands such as wmic, wuauclt, or random UsoClient switches should not be presented as a dependable way to update all Windows 11 drivers. They do not provide a supported, universal driver-update workflow. wmic is also deprecated in current Windows releases.
For drivers delivered through Microsoft, use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates when that category is available. CMD can open Settings, but it cannot replace the selection and installation process with a documented “install every driver” command.

pnputil /delete-driver oem42.inf /uninstallUse deletion cautiously. Removing a package that Windows needs can disable a device or make recovery harder. Create a restore point or keep the exported backup before removing anything.

Can I update all Windows 11 drivers with one CMD command?
No. Windows 11 has no universal, supported CMD command that searches all driver sources and installs every available update. PnPUtil installs driver packages that you already downloaded.
What is the best CMD command to install a driver?
For an extracted INF package, use pnputil /add-driver "C:Pathdriver.inf" /install. Use /subdirs with a wildcard when the supported package contains multiple INF files.

No. It scans for hardware changes. It does not contact a driver catalog or install newer packages.
How do I check whether a device has a driver problem?
Open an elevated terminal and run pnputil /enum-devices /problem. For the complete third-party Driver Store list, run pnputil /enum-drivers.
Can I install an EXE driver installer from CMD?
Usually, yes, by launching it with a command such as start "" "C:Driverssetup.exe". Silent switches and other options depend on the manufacturer and should be taken from its documentation.
