The message “Application error: a client-side exception has occurred” usually means that JavaScript running on a website failed in your browser. It is not normally a Windows 11 system error, and reinstalling Windows or running sfc /scannow is unlikely to fix it.
The cause is commonly corrupted site data, an extension that changes page scripts, blocked cookies or JavaScript, Secure DNS or antivirus filtering, an outdated browser, or a problem with the website itself. Work through the fixes below in order so you can identify which category applies.
First, identify whether the problem is local
Before changing browser settings, open the same website in a different type of session:
Recommended Free Tools
- Try the page in another browser, such as Edge if you normally use Chrome.
- Try a private window in the same browser.
- If possible, try another device or network.
These results are useful:
| Test result | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| The page works in a private window | Normal-profile cookies, site data, extensions, or browser settings |
| The page fails in Chrome but works in Edge | Chrome profile, extension, cache, DNS, or Chrome-specific setting |
| The page fails in every browser on one PC | Security software, VPN, DNS filtering, network configuration, or the site |
| The page fails on several devices and networks | Website code, authentication, deployment, or an outage |
1. Test a private browsing window
Chrome
Open Chrome, select the three-dot menu, then choose New Incognito window. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + N.

Edge
Open Edge, select the three-dot menu, and choose New InPrivate window. Sign in to the affected website again and load the page.
A private window uses a separate temporary session. If the site works there, the normal profile is a strong suspect. However, Incognito is not a perfect extension test, and Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito. A site that depends on third-party sign-in or embedded content may therefore fail in private mode for a different reason.
2. Disable extensions and browser-injected tools
Ad blockers, cookie managers, translator tools, privacy extensions, script blockers, password managers, and security extensions can alter a page’s scripts, cookies, or network requests. A single blocked JavaScript bundle or authentication request can produce this error.
Disable extensions in Chrome
- Open
chrome://extensionsin the address bar. - Turn off every extension.
- Close and reopen Chrome, then test the website.
- If the error disappears, enable extensions one at a time until the problem returns.
Disable extensions in Edge
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot button).
- Choose Extensions, then Manage extensions.
- Turn off the extensions, restart Edge, and test the page.
- Re-enable them individually to locate the conflict.
Do not leave security software disabled permanently. If disabling its browser protection fixes the page, add the website to the product’s trusted or allowed list, or contact the software vendor for a safer configuration.
3. Clear the affected website’s data
Clearing browsing history alone may not remove the data causing the failure. Modern web applications also store cookies, cached JavaScript, local storage, IndexedDB data, and site permissions.
Prefer a targeted reset first, because deleting all browser data can sign you out of websites and remove saved application data.

Clear one site’s data in Chrome
- Open the affected website.
- Select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar.
- Choose Site settings.
- Select Reset permissions, if shown.
- Return to the site and reload it with Ctrl + F5.
Depending on the Chrome version, you can also open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → See all site data and permissions. Search for the domain, remove its stored data, and then reopen the site.

You will probably need to sign in again. If the site is a web application, clearing its data can also remove offline content, preferences, or an unsent local draft.
Clear browsing data more broadly
Use this when a targeted reset does not help:
- In Chrome, select the three-dot menu → Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range such as All time.
- Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
- Do not select saved passwords unless you have confirmed that they are stored elsewhere.
- Select Delete data, restart the browser, and try again.
In Edge, open Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Choose what to clear. Select cookies and cached files, then clear them.
4. Check JavaScript, cookies, and site permissions
Most interactive websites require JavaScript. Do not disable it globally as a general troubleshooting step; that will make many applications fail by design.
In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings. Check the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Third-party cookies: temporarily allow them for the affected site if its sign-in, payment, embedded content, or identity provider requires them.
- Pop-ups and redirects: allow them only for the affected site if its login or workflow uses a separate window.
- Insecure content: review this only if the application loads resources from another domain.
For a site-specific setting, open the website, select the icon to the left of the address, choose Site settings, and review or reset its permissions. After changing a permission, close the tab and open the site again.

5. Update the browser
Updating Windows does not necessarily install the latest Chrome or Edge update. Each browser has its own update process.
Update Chrome
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Help → About Google Chrome.
- Allow Chrome to check for updates.
- Select Relaunch if that button appears.
If Chrome does not offer Relaunch, it normally reports that the browser is up to date. Reopen the browser even if no update was shown, because a pending update may require a restart.
Update Edge
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Open Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge.
- Install the update if one is available, then select Restart.
6. Check Secure DNS, VPNs, and security filtering
A browser can display this message when a required JavaScript file, API call, authentication request, or third-party resource is blocked before the page finishes loading. Potential blockers include:
- Secure DNS providers and DNS filtering services;
- VPNs and corporate web filters;
- antivirus web protection;
- anti-tracking applications;
- router-level ad blocking or parental controls.
As a temporary diagnostic test, disconnect a VPN and pause web filtering, then reload the page. Do not disable protection while visiting unsafe websites or leave it disabled after testing.
In Chrome, Secure DNS is under Settings → Privacy and security → Security. Under Use secure DNS, temporarily switch to your current service provider or turn the option off for the test. If that fixes the error, restore the setting and investigate the selected DNS provider, local filtering software, or network administrator.
Secure DNS is only one documented cause, not a universal solution. Changing it unnecessarily can reduce DNS privacy or create other connection problems.

7. Reset Chrome settings
If the problem affects several websites or Chrome settings have been changed by unwanted software, reset Chrome:
- Open the three-dot menu → Settings.
- Select Reset settings.
- Choose Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings.
Chrome says this does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords. It does reset items such as the search engine, homepage, startup pages, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. You may need to enable trusted extensions again, so record the extensions you actually use before starting.
This is not a complete profile deletion: some settings, including certain font and accessibility settings, remain. If Chrome’s Settings page will not open, Google’s fallback is to uninstall Chrome and download it again from the official Chrome website.
8. Inspect the browser error when the problem continues
The visible message is generic; the browser console often contains the useful detail.
- Open the affected page.
- Press F12, or press Ctrl + Shift + J in Chrome and Edge.
- Open the Console tab and reload the page.
- Look for red errors, failed script files, blocked requests, or authentication errors.
- Open the Network tab, reload again, and check requests marked in red or returning status codes such as
401,403, or500.
For example, a failed request to an authentication domain suggests a cookie, privacy, DNS, or sign-in problem. A JavaScript TypeError occurring for every user is more likely a defect in the website’s own code. You do not need to fix console errors that belong to browser extensions or unrelated advertising frames.

When the website is the real problem
Contact the site owner or wait for a service update if the page still fails:
- in Chrome and Edge;
- in normal and private windows;
- with extensions disabled;
- after its site data is cleared;
- on another device or network.
Give the website’s support team the page URL, your browser and version, Windows version, approximate time of failure, and the exact console or Network error. Do not send passwords, session cookies, access tokens, or private customer data from developer tools.
What not to do
- Do not assume the message means Windows 11 is damaged.
- Do not run registry cleaners or random command-line “fixes.”
- Do not disable JavaScript globally.
- Do not assume Incognito always disables every extension.
- Do not delete all passwords and browser data before trying a site-specific reset.
- Do not reinstall Windows before testing the browser, profile, security software, and website.
FAQ
Is “a client-side exception has occurred” a Windows 11 error?
Usually not. It normally indicates that JavaScript in a web page failed in Chrome, Edge, or another browser. Windows 11 is the operating environment, but the immediate cause is generally the browser session, an extension, blocked resource, stored site data, or the website itself.
Will clearing browser history fix the error?
Not necessarily. History is separate from cookies, cached files, local storage, IndexedDB data, and site permissions. Clear the affected website’s data first, then clear cookies and cached files more broadly if needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does the website work in Incognito but not in Chrome normally?
The normal Chrome profile may contain a conflicting extension, corrupted site data, or a setting that blocks the page. Incognito also blocks third-party cookies by default, so a site that works there is not automatically proven to be extension-related.
Should I turn off JavaScript?
No. Modern web applications generally require JavaScript. Check that JavaScript is allowed for the affected site instead of disabling it globally.
Can Secure DNS cause this client-side exception?
It can. DNS filtering may prevent a required script or API endpoint from loading. Test Secure DNS, VPN, antivirus web protection, and other filtering tools one at a time, then restore protection and adjust the responsible service rather than leaving it disabled.
What if the error appears in every browser?
Test another device and network. If the failure follows the website across devices and networks, the website’s code, authentication service, deployment, or infrastructure is the likely cause. If it affects only one PC, investigate security software, VPNs, DNS filtering, and network policies.
The Bottom Line
Start with a private-window and second-browser test, then disable extensions, reset the affected site’s data, check JavaScript and cookies, update the browser, and investigate Secure DNS or security filtering. If the error survives those tests across multiple devices and networks, it is probably a website-side failure—not a Windows 11 problem.
