The Windows Update Assistant is for manually installing a Windows feature update when Windows Update has not offered it yet. It is not a tool for choosing and installing an individual monthly security update or a specific KB package.
For ordinary fixes and security updates, start with Settings > Windows Update. If you are moving a compatible PC to the current Windows 11 release, Microsoft’s download page calls the tool the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
What the Windows Update Assistant installs
Windows updates fall into two useful categories:

The Assistant does not let you enter a KB number and install that package manually. If you need a particular KB update, use Windows Update or obtain the package from the Microsoft Update Catalog instead.

Before starting, record the version already installed:

- Select the Search box on the taskbar.
- Type
winver. - Select winver in the search results.
The About Windows dialog shows the Windows edition and version, such as Windows 11 version 24H2 or Windows 10 version 22H2. You can also run the documented command from Run, Command Prompt, or PowerShell:
winverMicrosoft currently identifies Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2 as the current Windows 11 release. The final Windows 10 feature release is Windows 10 2022 Update, version 22H2.
Try Windows Update first
Microsoft recommends allowing Windows Update to offer the upgrade when possible. Install any pending updates and restart before trying the Assistant. A pending restart or unfinished update can prevent a new feature update from appearing.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If an update appears, select Download & install.
- Restart when Windows prompts you.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select Download & install if updates are available.
- Restart when prompted.
If the feature update still is not offered, Microsoft says you can obtain it manually through the Windows Update Assistant. A compatible device may not receive an offer immediately because Microsoft stages releases and can place a temporary compatibility hold on particular hardware, drivers, or software.
Requirements for the Windows 11 Installation Assistant
Before downloading the current tool, verify these requirements:

- The PC uses an x64 processor. The tool does not run on ARM-based PCs.
- The PC already runs Windows 10 version 2004 or higher, or Windows 11.
- At least 9 GB of free disk space is available for the Windows 11 download.
- You have a Windows 10 or Windows 11 license.
- You can approve an administrator prompt. Administrator privileges are required.
- The PC has an internet connection.
For a laptop or tablet, connect the charger before beginning. Do not rely on a nearly empty battery while Windows is downloading and installing a feature update.
Manually install Windows 11 with the Assistant
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Find Windows 11 Installation Assistant and select Download Now.
- When the download finishes, select Run. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Allow the Assistant to check the PC’s hardware and Windows installation.
- When the license terms appear, select Accept and install.
- Leave the Assistant running while it downloads and prepares Windows 11.
- When prompted, select Restart now.
The PC restarts several times during the upgrade. Do not turn it off, close the lid, disconnect its power, or interrupt the process. When the installation is complete, Windows displays the sign-in screen.
After signing in, run winver again to confirm the new version. You can also open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates to look for subsequent quality updates.
What the compatibility messages mean
“Install Windows 11”
This means the Assistant has determined that the PC meets the relevant hardware requirements. Select Accept and install, then Restart now when the tool is ready.
“Use the PC Health Check app to check compatibility”
The Assistant needs additional information before it can decide whether the PC qualifies. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, then return to the Installation Assistant and select Refresh.

“This PC doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements to install Windows 11”
The device failed Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements check. Microsoft recommends leaving that device on Windows 10 rather than forcing an unsupported installation through unofficial workarounds.

Microsoft may be waiting for the device’s rollout stage or holding the update because of a known compatibility issue. In that situation, waiting for Windows Update is the safer option.
Common problems before or during installation

| The download cannot start | Check the internet connection, available disk space, and whether the connection is metered. |
| There is not enough storage | Free at least 9 GB for the Windows 11 download, preferably more for temporary installation files. |
| The upgrade is not offered | Install pending updates, restart, check again, and consider a Microsoft compatibility hold. |
| The installation is waiting for a restart | Open Windows Update. The page may show Restart required and Pending restart. Select Restart now. |
Updates need an internet connection, and some updates are not installed automatically over a metered connection. On portable computers, keep the device connected to power throughout the process.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it after that date. The Windows 10 2022 Update, version 22H2, was its last feature release.
Consequently, using an Assistant to move a compatible PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is not the same as keeping Windows 10 current. Check hardware compatibility and licensing before planning the upgrade.

Undo an update if something goes wrong
If an installed update causes a problem, Microsoft provides these removal paths:
Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates
Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates
Select the update and choose Uninstall. Not every update can be removed, so this option is not a guaranteed rollback method.

Why is a compatible Windows 11 PC not being offered the update?
Microsoft stages feature updates and can delay an offer because the rollout is not ready for that device or because of a known compatibility issue. Pending updates and a required restart can also delay the offer.
Does the Windows 11 Installation Assistant work on ARM PCs?
No. Microsoft’s current tool supports x64 processors only and does not run on ARM-based PCs.
How much free space does the Windows 11 Installation Assistant need?
Microsoft lists 9 GB of free disk space as the requirement to download Windows 11. Having additional space available is sensible because the upgrade also needs temporary working space.

The Installation Assistant is an upgrade tool rather than a clean-install tool, but you should still back up important files before starting any major Windows version change.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows Update for routine security and quality updates. Use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant when you need to manually start a compatible Windows feature upgrade that has not yet appeared in Settings. Check the version with winver, install pending updates first, keep the computer powered and connected, and do not interrupt the repeated restarts.
