Outlook normally saves an unfinished email as a draft, so you can close it and return to it later. The exact controls depend on whether you use new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook, Outlook on the web, or the mobile app.
For an immediate manual save, use the save command available in your version of Outlook, or close the message window and choose to save the changes when prompted. The message will then be available in the Drafts folder.
How to save an email as a draft in Outlook
Use the section that matches your Outlook app. Microsoft currently uses different labels in the new and classic Windows versions.
New Outlook for Windows
- Select New > Mail from the ribbon, or press Ctrl + N.
- Enter any recipients, a subject, and the message text. You do not need to complete the email.
- To save it immediately, select Options > Save draft.
- If you simply leave the message open, Outlook automatically saves it to Drafts every 30 seconds.
- Close the compose window when you are finished. Later, open Drafts in the Folder pane and select the message.
New Outlook’s 30-second automatic-save interval cannot be changed. If you have just typed important content and need to close Outlook immediately, use Options > Save draft rather than relying on the next automatic save.

Classic Outlook for Windows
- In Mail, select New Email, or press Ctrl + N.
- Write part or all of the message. If more than one account is configured, use the From field to choose the account that should send it.
- Select File > Save, or select Save on the Quick Access Toolbar.
- Close the message window. The unsent email is stored in the Drafts folder.
Classic Outlook also saves an unsent message automatically after you stop typing for several seconds. Its automatic-save interval is configurable: go to File > Options > Mail, find Automatically save items that have not been sent after this many minutes, and enter a value from 1 to 99 minutes.
Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
- Open Outlook in your browser and select New message.
- Enter the recipient on the To line, add a subject in Add a subject, and type your message.
- Add an attachment with Attach, if needed.
- Leave the message window or close it. Outlook saves the unfinished message in Drafts.
- To continue later, open Drafts, select the message, finish editing it, and select Send when it is ready.
If your contacts do not appear after selecting To or Cc, type the person’s name or complete email address directly into the field. This is a documented workaround for a contact-list issue affecting some Outlook.com users.
Outlook for iPhone and Android
- Open the Outlook mobile app and tap the New Mail button.
- Enter the recipient, subject, and message text.
- Go back or close the compose screen. Outlook saves the unfinished email in Drafts.
- Open the Drafts folder and tap the message to continue working on it.
When the draft is ready, tap the Send icon, shown as a triangle at the top right of a new message. When replying within a conversation, the Send icon appears at the bottom right.
How to open and send a saved draft
Saving a draft does not send it. You must reopen the message and select Send.
| Outlook version | Where to find the draft | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| New Outlook for Windows | Folder pane > Drafts | Select the draft. Double-click it if you need a separate message window, then select Send. |
| Classic Outlook for Windows | Mail > Drafts | Double-click the message, complete it, and select Send. |
| Outlook on the web | Drafts | Select the draft, finish editing, and select Send. |
| iPhone or Android | Drafts | Open the message and tap the triangular Send icon. |
How to save a draft before closing Outlook

- Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)
- New Outlook: select Options > Save draft.
- Classic Outlook: select File > Save or use Save on the Quick Access Toolbar.
- Web and mobile: allow the message to finish synchronizing, then close the compose window and verify that it appears in Drafts.
Do not assume that every keystroke is saved instantly. New Outlook uses a 30-second automatic-save cycle, while classic Outlook waits until you stop typing for several seconds. A manual save is the safer choice before switching devices, closing the app, or restarting a computer.
Move a draft between devices
Drafts associated with an Outlook account synchronize across supported Outlook apps. For example, you can begin a message in Outlook on a computer, open Drafts on an iPhone or Android device, and finish it there. Synchronization may take a moment, particularly when the message contains a large attachment or the device has a weak connection.

Schedule a draft instead of sending it now
Outlook.com can schedule a message for later rather than leaving it as an ordinary draft:
- Compose the email and select the arrow beside Send.
- Select Send later.
- Choose the date and time.
- Select Send again to confirm the schedule.
Availability of Send later may vary because Microsoft is rolling out the feature. A scheduled message may appear in Drafts or Sent Items, depending on the device. You can edit or delete it before the scheduled time, and the device does not need to remain online when the message is due to send.

Why an Outlook draft is not appearing
The message was closed too quickly
New Outlook may not have reached its 30-second automatic-save point. Reopen the message if it is still available, select Options > Save draft, and then close it.
You are using the other Windows Outlook interface
The buttons differ between new and classic Outlook. If you cannot find New > Mail, Options > Save draft, or the Folder pane described for new Outlook, try the classic Outlook steps. Classic Outlook uses New Email and saves manually through File > Save.
You are checking the wrong mailbox
Each account has its own folders. Expand the account list and check the Drafts folder belonging to the account used in the message’s From field.
The app has not synchronized
On the web and mobile apps, check your internet connection and wait briefly. Refresh the folder, then look again under Drafts. Large attachments can delay synchronization.

- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
The draft was accidentally sent
Once you select Send, the message leaves Drafts. Check Sent Items to confirm whether it was sent. If it was sent accidentally, contact the recipient promptly; removing it from your Sent Items folder does not normally recall it from the recipient’s mailbox.
What Outlook cannot save in every version
Saving an email as a draft is different from exporting it as a file. Microsoft documents saving a draft as a Word document or template as unsupported in new Outlook. If you need a reusable document, copy the content to Word or use a supported template feature in the Outlook version you are using.
Also note that a draft is stored in the mailbox, not as a standalone file on your computer. If you need an independent copy, use an export or print-to-PDF option where available, but that copy will not behave like a live Outlook draft.
