Windows 11 Notepad is distributed through Microsoft Store, so you can install or reinstall it without downloading an installer from an unofficial website. The Microsoft Store listing is named Windows Notepad and has product ID 9MSMLRH6LZF3.
Before starting, connect the PC to the internet, install any pending Windows updates, restart if Windows requests it, and sign in to Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account. A pending restart or an unsigned-in Store session can prevent installation.
Install Notepad from Microsoft Store
- Select Start and open Microsoft Store.
- In the Store search box, enter Windows Notepad.
- Select the listing published by Microsoft. Confirm that its product ID is
9MSMLRH6LZF3if you want to verify that you have selected the official listing. - Select Install.
- When installation finishes, select Open, or search for Notepad from Start.
You can also open the official product page directly: Windows Notepad in Microsoft Store. If the link opens in a browser, select the option to open it in Microsoft Store when Windows offers one.
Install pending Windows updates first
Microsoft Store apps can fail to install when Windows itself is waiting for an update or restart. Check for updates before retrying:

- Select Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows offers updates, select Install now.
- Restart the PC if prompted. Even if the update has finished downloading, a pending restart can stop the Store from installing Notepad.
Reinstall Notepad on Windows 11
If Notepad was removed or its installation is damaged, use Microsoft Store’s Library rather than searching for an old standalone Windows component.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Notepad or Windows Notepad in the list.
- Select Install.
The current Store-based distribution means the claim that Notepad cannot be reinstalled because it is a built-in Windows component is outdated. Microsoft’s current Store-app guidance supports reinstalling it from the Library.
Update Notepad
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
If a Store update is available, Microsoft Store starts installing it automatically. Notepad updates delivered through the Store are handled through this Library update process.
If Microsoft Store is missing
Microsoft Store may be installed but not pinned to the Start menu. Select Start, type Microsoft Store, and select it from the search results. To make it easier to find next time, right-click the result and select Pin to Start.
If no result appears, the PC may be managed by an organization. A work or school administrator can disable Microsoft Store, including through the RemoveWindowsStore policy. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

Fix common installation problems
1. Sign in to Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store and sign in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft may not authorize the PC to use Store apps until the Store session is signed in. If the account prompt appears during installation, complete it and try the Notepad installation again.
2. Check the app-source setting
If Windows recommends another app source or blocks an installation choice, check the current Windows 11 setting:
- Select Start → Settings → Apps → Advanced app settings.
- Under Choose where to get apps, select one of the available options. To restrict installations to Store apps, choose The Microsoft Store only (Recommended). To allow other sources, choose Anywhere, or one of the warning options.
Do not follow older instructions that use Settings → Apps → Apps & features; that is an older Windows interface. The current Windows 11 menu is Advanced app settings.
3. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged Store cache can prevent the listing from loading or leave an installation stuck.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
A blank Command Prompt window appears. It normally closes after approximately 10 seconds, and Microsoft Store opens automatically. Search for Windows Notepad and retry the installation.

4. Check whether Store is registered for your account
If Microsoft Store is present but behaves as though it is unavailable, check its package registration from a non-elevated PowerShell window:

Do not select Run as administrator. Microsoft warns that registering Store from an elevated prompt registers it for the administrator account instead of the current user.
If the command shows that the Microsoft Store package exists but is not registered for your user, run this command in the same non-elevated PowerShell window:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbweAfter the command completes, open Microsoft Store again and retry the Notepad installation.
5. Check network and organization restrictions
A firewall, proxy, or enterprise policy can block Microsoft Store or the Windows Update endpoints it relies on. Symptoms include a download that remains at zero, an error immediately after selecting Install, or a Store page that loads without enabling the install button.

On a managed PC, ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store access, required update endpoints, or application installation has been restricted. A home user should also check whether a security product, proxy, VPN, or firewall is blocking the Store connection.
6. Check why the listing or Install button is unavailable
Microsoft Store can hide an app or disable its installation button when:
- the app is unavailable in your country or region;
- Microsoft family settings hide or restrict it;
- the device is incompatible;
- the signed-in account is not eligible to use the app; or
- an administrator has restricted Store access.
Verify that you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account and that the PC is running a supported Windows 11 configuration. If this is a work-managed computer, contact IT.

Therefore, use the Microsoft Store listing and its Install button as the reliable method instead of copying an unverified Notepad ID from another site.

What not to do
- Do not download a random
notepad.exereplacement from a third-party website. - Do not use an elevated PowerShell prompt for the Store registration commands above when fixing Store access for your own account.
- Do not assume that an old guide using Apps & features describes the current Windows 11 menus.
- Do not treat a missing Install button as proof that Notepad is permanently unavailable; region, account, device, family, and policy restrictions can all produce the same symptom.

Is Windows Notepad free?
Yes. The official Windows Notepad listing is available through Microsoft Store. Search for Windows Notepad and select the Microsoft-published result.
Why can’t I find Notepad in Microsoft Store?
Confirm that you searched for Windows Notepad, are signed in with a Microsoft account, and have installed pending Windows updates. The listing can also be hidden or unavailable because of region, family settings, device compatibility, account eligibility, or an administrator policy.
How do I reinstall Notepad after deleting it?
Open Microsoft Store → Library, find Notepad, and select Install.
