A Minecraft texture pack can fail in several different ways: it may not appear in the pack list, appear but leave the graphics unchanged, show pink-and-black missing textures, or become incompatible after an update. The correct fix depends first on whether you are using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. Their resource-pack formats are different, so copying a Java pack into a Bedrock folder will not convert it.

1. Check which Minecraft edition you are using

Java and Bedrock resource packs are not interchangeable:

Edition Required pack metadata Typical problem
Java Edition pack.mcmeta Outdated metadata, wrong asset paths, incompatible models or shaders
Bedrock Edition manifest.json Malformed manifest, duplicate UUIDs, incorrect folder structure or pack order

A Java pack must be converted before it can work in Bedrock. Conversion involves structural changes, including different animation definitions; changing the folder or file extension is not enough.

2. If the pack does not appear in Minecraft Bedrock

Start with the pack’s location and manifest. On current main Minecraft releases for Windows, open the Run dialog with Win + R and enter:

%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang

Development packs belong in:

%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojangdevelopment_resource_packs

The folder you place there should contain manifest.json directly. Avoid an extra nested folder such as:

development_resource_packsMyPackMyPackmanifest.json

Unless the pack was deliberately packaged that way, Minecraft may not find it.

Check that the file is really named manifest.json

Windows can hide known file extensions, making a file called manifest.json.txt look like manifest.json. In File Explorer, select View → Show → File name extensions, then check the complete filename.

Validate the Bedrock manifest

A Bedrock resource pack needs a valid JSON manifest containing a format version, header, and resources module. A basic structure looks like this:

{
  "format_version": 2,
  "header": {
    "name": "My Resource Pack",
    "description": "A test resource pack",
    "uuid": "11111111-1111-4111-8111-111111111111",
    "version": [1, 0, 0],
    "min_engine_version": [1, 20, 0]
  },
  "modules": [
    {
      "description": "Resource files",
      "type": "resources",
      "uuid": "22222222-2222-4222-8222-222222222222",
      "version": [1, 0, 0]
    }
  ]
}

The example is a template, not a finished identity for publishing. Replace the UUIDs with valid UUIDs, and make sure the header.uuid and modules[0].uuid values are different. Duplicate UUIDs can stop the pack loading correctly.

Look for ordinary JSON errors as well:

  • Missing or extra curly braces
  • Missing commas between properties
  • Unmatched quotation marks
  • Comments inside the JSON file
  • Incorrect property names or value types

Open the file in a code editor or JSON validator. Do not use a word processor, which may add formatting that breaks the file.

3. Activate the Bedrock pack for the world

A pack installed on the device is not automatically active in every world. To apply it to a new Bedrock world, use:

  1. Select Play.
  2. Choose Create New World.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Open Add-Ons → Resource Packs.
  5. Select MY PACKS.
  6. Choose the pack and click Activate.
  7. Create the world.

You can also apply a pack through Bedrock’s global resource-pack settings. Global activation and world-level activation are separate, so activating a pack for one world does not automatically activate it in existing or future worlds.

4. The Bedrock pack is active, but nothing changes

When the pack appears in the active list but the vanilla texture remains, check these items in order.

Move the pack above competing packs

Bedrock uses pack stacking. If two active packs contain the same asset, the pack loaded later or placed higher in the active-pack order takes precedence. Move your pack above other texture packs, then test again.

For a reliable test, temporarily disable unrelated resource and add-on packs. Multiple active add-ons can conflict, cause visual problems, display errors, or crash the game. Disabling an add-on only stops it from being used; it does not remove its files from device storage.

Check the exact folder hierarchy

Names and paths must match the asset Minecraft expects. For example, a dirt texture replacement should be arranged like this:

MyPack
├── manifest.json
└── textures
    └── blocks
        └── dirt.png

The path must use texturesblocks, and the replacement must use the expected filename, dirt.png. These small differences will prevent the replacement from being found:

textureblockdirt.png
texturesblocksDirt.png
texturesblocksdirt.jpg
texturesblocksdirt.png.png

Bedrock paths, identifiers, and names are case-sensitive. Treat custom_mob and Custom_Mob as different names.

Make sure you are replacing the asset you are actually looking at

Changing dirt.png changes ordinary dirt, but it does not necessarily change grass-covered dirt. Different blocks and block states can use different texture assets. If only one variation changes, compare your pack with Microsoft’s vanilla resource pack and identify the exact vanilla file used by the block, item, or entity.

Verify that the image is a real PNG

Renaming a JPG, GIF, or another file to .png does not convert it into a PNG. Open the image in an image editor and export it as PNG. Also check that the file is not accidentally named dirt.png.png.

5. Bedrock entities show a pink-and-black texture

The pink-and-black checkerboard usually means Minecraft cannot resolve an entity texture. Check all four links in the chain:

  1. The client entity’s texture path
  2. The resource-pack identifier
  3. The render-controller reference
  4. The actual image file and its location

Confirm that the image is a valid PNG and that every path uses the same spelling and capitalization. A valid image in the wrong folder is still unavailable to the entity.

6. Use Bedrock’s Content Log

Enable the Content Log in Minecraft’s creator settings. It is the main diagnostic tool for resource-pack and add-on errors. Look for messages about:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • JSON parsing
  • Missing files
  • Invalid texture paths
  • Unknown identifiers
  • Duplicate UUIDs
  • Invalid images

Fix the first relevant error rather than changing several files at once. A single malformed manifest can prevent Minecraft from loading the rest of the pack.

7. Reload the Bedrock pack after making changes

With cheats enabled, run:

/reload

This reloads behavior and resource packs. Restarting the world is the alternative when the command is unavailable or does not refresh the change. However, /reload cannot repair malformed JSON, wrong paths, duplicate UUIDs, invalid PNG files, or a pack built for the wrong edition. It only reloads files that are already valid.

8. Fix a Java Edition pack that does not appear or says “Incompatible”

Java resource packs use pack.mcmeta, not manifest.json. Check that pack.mcmeta is in the top level of the pack folder or archive, alongside folders such as assets. If it is buried inside a second folder, Minecraft may not recognize the pack correctly.

After a Minecraft update, an incompatible label does not always mean that changing one number will fix the pack. The metadata, asset paths, filenames, models, shaders, and other resources must match the target version.

Important change in Java 1.21.9

Java Edition 1.21.9 changed resource-pack metadata. The resource-pack version became 69.0, and pack versions gained minor versions. A minor-version increment is backward-compatible within the same major version.

For the new metadata format:

  • supported_formats was removed.
  • pack_format is optional when using the new format.
  • min_format is required.
  • max_format is required.
  • min_format and max_format can contain a major version or a two-number version such as [74, 1].

The older metadata fields remain required when a pack declares support for the previous-format range, meaning resource-pack versions below 65. Otherwise, using the old supported_formats field is not valid under the 1.21.9 format.

Do not blindly change the displayed pack version. A pack may still fail because its block models, item models, texture paths, animation files, or shaders are outdated. Java 1.21.9 also warns that overriding core shaders is unsupported and can break as the game changes.

9. Test Java packs without conflicts

  1. Temporarily disable every other resource pack.
  2. Activate only the problem pack.
  3. Reload the resource packs from Minecraft’s resource-pack settings or restart the game.
  4. Test the specific block or item the pack was meant to change.

If the pack works alone, another pack is overriding its files. Re-enable packs one at a time until the conflict returns. If it fails alone, inspect its pack.mcmeta, the top-level folder structure, and the exact path of the asset.

10. Fast diagnosis checklist

Symptom Most likely cause What to do
Pack is missing from Bedrock’s MY PACKS list Wrong folder, invalid manifest.json, hidden .txt extension, or duplicate UUIDs Check the folder level, validate JSON, show extensions, and use different UUIDs
Pack is active but the texture is unchanged Pack order, wrong filename, wrong path, or wrong target asset Move it higher, check case and folders, and identify the vanilla asset being used
Entity is pink and black Broken entity texture path, identifier, render-controller reference, or PNG Verify all four references and export a real PNG
Java pack says incompatible Outdated metadata or content that changed between versions Update pack.mcmeta and inspect models, assets, and shaders
Pack works alone but not with other packs Another pack overrides the same file or the packs conflict Change pack order and isolate the conflicting pack

11. The cleanest way to isolate the problem

Create a minimal test instead of troubleshooting a large pack all at once:

  1. Make a copy of the pack.
  2. Leave its metadata and one replacement texture in place.
  3. Disable every other resource pack and add-on.
  4. Confirm that the replacement file is in the exact vanilla-equivalent folder.
  5. Load the world and test one block or entity.
  6. Use the Content Log on Bedrock, or inspect pack.mcmeta and the asset paths on Java.
  7. Add the remaining files back in small groups.

This identifies whether the problem is the pack identity, one image, one model, a conflict, or a version-specific file. It is more dependable than repeatedly reinstalling the complete pack.

FAQ

Can I use a Java texture pack in Bedrock by copying it to the Bedrock folder?

No. Java and Bedrock use different resource-pack structures and metadata. A Java pack must be converted, including changes such as Bedrock-specific animation definitions.

Why does my Bedrock texture pack appear but not change anything?

The pack may be below another pack that replaces the same file, or the texture may be in the wrong folder, have the wrong case or filename, target a different asset, or not be a real PNG. Move it higher in the active-pack order and verify the exact vanilla path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Bedrock pack not listed?

Check that manifest.json is directly inside the pack folder, is not actually named manifest.json.txt, contains valid JSON, and uses different UUIDs for the header and resource module.

Does /reload fix a broken Minecraft resource pack?

It reloads valid behavior and resource-pack data, but it does not repair malformed JSON, incorrect paths, duplicate UUIDs, invalid PNG files, or a pack made for the wrong edition.

Can changing Java’s pack_format number fix an incompatible pack?

Not necessarily. Java 1.21.9 changed the metadata rules, including required min_format and max_format fields for the new format. The pack’s models, assets, paths, and shaders may also need updates.

Why does changing dirt.png not change grass-covered dirt?

Those blocks can use different texture assets. The file for ordinary dirt does not automatically replace every dirt-related block or block state.

The Bottom Line

Find the edition first, then check the pack’s required metadata: manifest.json for Bedrock or pack.mcmeta for Java. For Bedrock, verify the manifest, distinct UUIDs, exact texturesblocks paths, valid PNG files, activation scope, and pack order. For Java, check the current metadata rules and update content—not just the version number—when Minecraft changes. Finally, test with other packs disabled and use the Bedrock Content Log or a minimal one-texture test to identify the exact failing file.
