Microsoft Edge does not have one setting named Full Dark Mode for InPrivate. Its built-in dark theme changes the Edge interface—tabs, address bar, menus, Settings, and other browser surfaces—but it does not force every website to use dark colors.
For the closest available result, enable Edge’s dark appearance, apply Windows’ dark app mode if InPrivate still opens light, and separately allow a trusted dark-mode extension to run in InPrivate if you need websites themselves to be dark.
What Edge’s dark mode does—and does not do
Edge’s dark theme controls the browser frame. It can make the InPrivate window, toolbar, menus, and internal Edge pages dark. A website can still display a white page if it does not support dark mode.
| What you want to darken | Correct solution |
|---|---|
| Tabs, toolbar, menus, and Edge settings | Set Edge’s Overall appearance to Dark. |
| InPrivate’s interface when it ignores Edge’s theme | Set Windows’ default app mode to Dark, then restart Edge. |
| Website backgrounds, text, and page controls | Use the site’s own dark-mode option or a dark-mode extension. |
| All websites without relying on an extension | The experimental Force Dark Mode for Web Contents flag may work in some builds, but it is not a guaranteed current feature. |
Method 1: Set Edge’s overall appearance to Dark
Make this change from a regular Edge window, not an InPrivate window.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- Open Microsoft Edge normally.
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Select Appearance in the left pane.
- Under Overall appearance, select Dark.
You can open the same page directly by entering edge://settings/appearance in the address bar.
Now open InPrivate by selecting Settings and more (…) > New InPrivate window, or press Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows.
This changes Edge’s interface only. For example, a supported website may follow the dark preference, while a site with fixed white CSS colors may remain white.
Method 2: Fix an InPrivate window that still opens light
Some recent Edge installations have been reported to keep normal windows dark while opening InPrivate windows with a light interface. In that situation, changing Edge’s Overall appearance alone may not be enough.
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Colors.
- Find the setting for the default Windows app mode.
- Set it to Dark.
Depending on your Windows version, you may first need to set the main mode selector to Custom or Dark before the app-mode controls appear. If Windows separately exposes a Windows mode and an app mode, set the app mode to Dark; setting both to Dark is also appropriate if InPrivate continues to use the light theme.

The Windows setting affects Edge’s interface. It does not automatically recolor every webpage.

If your goal is a dark webpage—not merely a dark InPrivate toolbar—use a reputable dark-mode extension or the website’s built-in dark theme.
- Install a dark-mode extension from the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store.
- Enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar. - Locate the extension and select Details.
- Turn on Allow in InPrivate.
- Open a new InPrivate window and test the websites you use.
Edge does not automatically run extensions in InPrivate. The permission must be enabled for each extension.
Consider this permission carefully. An extension allowed in InPrivate can read and modify page content while active. Microsoft also warns that Edge cannot prevent an extension from saving browsing history during InPrivate browsing. Only enable the permission for an extension you trust, and disable it again from edge://extensions when you no longer need it.

What about Force Dark Mode for Web Contents?
Older guides commonly recommend Edge’s experimental Force Dark Mode for Web Contents flag. Where the flag is present, the reported procedure is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open
edge://flags. - Search for Force Dark Mode for Web Contents.
- Change the option from Default to Enabled.
- Select Restart.
This is a browser-level color transformation, not a dedicated InPrivate setting. It can produce inverted logos, strange image colors, incorrect form colors, poor contrast, and broken layouts. More importantly, recent Edge builds and user reports indicate that the flag or its effect may no longer be available. Treat it as an optional experiment, not as the recommended or guaranteed solution.
If the flag is missing, do not replace it with command-line switches copied from an old guide. There is no Microsoft-verified current command-line option that enables full dark mode specifically for InPrivate.
Troubleshooting
Edge is dark, but websites are still white
This is expected when a website has no native dark theme. Select the site’s own theme control, if available, or use a dark-mode extension with permission to run in InPrivate.
Normal Edge windows are dark but InPrivate is light
Set Windows’ app mode to Dark under Settings > Personalization > Colors. Close all Edge windows and reopen the browser before testing a new InPrivate window.

The extension works normally but not in InPrivate
Open edge://extensions, select the extension’s Details, and enable Allow in InPrivate. If the switch is unavailable, the extension may not support InPrivate use or may be restricted by an administrator.
The appearance setting keeps changing back
The Edge profile may be managed by an organization. Open edge://policy to view policies applied to the browser. A company-managed profile can override appearance settings, restrict extensions, or control whether InPrivate is available.
There is no New InPrivate window option
An organization may have disabled InPrivate through policy. Microsoft Edge’s InPrivateModeAvailability policy uses these values:
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
0 |
InPrivate available |
1 |
InPrivate disabled |
2 |
InPrivate forced |
On Windows, the policy is under SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, with the REG_DWORD value name InPrivateModeAvailability. Do not change a work or school computer’s policy without administrator approval.
Remember what InPrivate does
InPrivate is a browsing-session privacy feature, not a dark-mode feature. After all InPrivate windows are closed, Edge removes items such as browsing history, cookies, site data, cached files, passwords, autofill data, site permissions, and hosted-app data from that session. InPrivate does not provide additional ad blocking or general protection from malicious websites.

FAQ
Is there a full dark mode setting specifically for Edge InPrivate?
No. Edge has no single setting called Full Dark Mode for InPrivate. Its dark appearance changes the browser interface, while webpage colors depend on the site, an extension, or an optional rendering feature.
Why is my normal Edge window dark but my InPrivate window light?
A recent Edge update or stale window styling can cause this behavior. Set Windows default app mode to Dark under Settings > Personalization > Colors, close all Edge windows, reopen Edge, and create a new InPrivate window.
How do I make websites dark in InPrivate?
Use each website’s own dark theme or install a trusted dark-mode extension. Open edge://extensions, select the extension’s Details page, and enable Allow in InPrivate.
Does InPrivate automatically enable dark mode?
No. InPrivate manages a temporary browsing session and its stored data. It does not change website colors or add general security protection.
Can I use Force Dark Mode for Web Contents?
Possibly, if your Edge build still exposes the experimental flag at edge://flags. It is not a reliable current solution and can distort images, logos, forms, contrast, and page layouts.
The Bottom Line
Start with Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Overall appearance > Dark. If InPrivate remains light, set Windows’ default app mode to Dark, close all Edge windows, and reopen the browser. To darken the actual webpages, use native site controls or allow a carefully chosen dark-mode extension in InPrivate. There is no guaranteed built-in “full dark mode” switch for every InPrivate page.
