The Windows 11 message “The RPC server is unavailable” is error 0x6BA (decimal 1722). It means Windows could not reach the RPC endpoint required by an operation. It does not necessarily mean that the core Remote Procedure Call service is stopped.
The cause may instead be DNS resolution, a blocked firewall port, a network path failure, incorrect domain time settings, or a service used by a particular application. Work through the checks below in order, stopping when the operation works again.
1. Identify when the error occurs
The context narrows the likely cause:

This distinction matters. Restarting the RPC service cannot repair a bad DNS record or a firewall blocking the dynamically assigned RPC port used after the initial connection.

Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Check these services:

- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- RPC Endpoint Mapper
- DCOM Server Process Launcher
- TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
- Remote Registry
For the first three, confirm that the service is running and that Startup type is not Disabled. Do not change core RPC services casually; many Windows components depend on them.
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper and Remote Registry are particularly relevant to Microsoft’s documented domain-logon failure scenario. They are not universal requirements for every RPC error on Windows 11. A local printer, DFS, WMI, or backup problem may have a different cause.
- Double-click the service.
- Check Service status.
- If it is stopped, select Start.
- For the domain-logon scenario, set the relevant Microsoft-identified services to Automatic, select Apply, then Start.
- Select OK and restart Windows if you changed service settings.
You can inspect a service from an elevated Command Prompt with:
sc.exe query <servicename>sc.exe requires the service name, which may differ from the display name shown in Services. Running sc.exe query without a service name displays installed services and their states.
3. Repair the Windows image and system files
Use an elevated Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt. Open Start, type Terminal, right-click Windows Terminal, and select Run as administrator.
Run DISM first, then System File Checker:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowDISM repairs the running Windows component store. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces damaged files where possible. Let each command finish before starting the next one.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth/CheckHealth reports whether corruption has already been detected and whether the image is repairable. /ScanHealth performs a more extensive scan.

If RestoreHealth cannot obtain repair files, use a compatible Windows repair source supplied by your organization or installation media:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:testmountwindows /LimitAccessThat path is only an example. The source must contain a compatible Windows repair image; an arbitrary Windows folder will not work. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from using Windows Update.
4. Verify DNS and network configuration
RPC commonly fails because the client resolves the target computer to the wrong address or cannot resolve it at all. In an Active Directory environment, the computer should normally use the organization’s domain DNS infrastructure, not an arbitrary public DNS server.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and display the complete configuration:
ipconfig /allCheck the active adapter’s IP address, default gateway, and DNS server addresses. Confirm that the computer is connected to the intended network or VPN.
Test the target computer or domain controller by name:
nslookup <server-name>For example:
nslookup dc01.example.comIf this returns no address, an unexpected address, or a DNS-server error, fix DNS before changing RPC settings. Contact the network or domain administrator if the DNS server addresses are centrally managed.
You can clear stale local DNS entries with:
ipconfig /flushdnsThis also removes cached negative responses, but it does not correct an incorrectly configured DNS server. If the computer’s dynamic DNS registration has failed, request registration again:

ipconfig /registerdnsFor domain operations, also check the computer’s clock and time zone. A significant time difference between a domain member and the domain controller can cause authentication and domain-logon failures that appear alongside RPC errors.
5. Check Windows Firewall and the RPC ports
Press Start, type wf.msc, and press Enter to open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
RPC is not limited to one port. On current Windows versions, the client commonly needs:

Port 135 tells the client which dynamic port hosts the requested RPC service. Therefore, opening TCP 135 alone may not solve the problem: the endpoint mapper can respond while the subsequent dynamic-port connection remains blocked.
Check both Windows Firewall and anything between the computers, including:
- Third-party endpoint-security or firewall software
- A VPN client
- Router or switch ACLs
- Network segmentation between client and server
- Firewall rules on the destination computer
Do not permanently disable the firewall as a generic test or fix. If a rule is required, use the advanced firewall console:
- Select Inbound Rules.
- Select Action → New Rule.
- Choose the appropriate rule type, such as Port or Custom.
- Specify the required protocol and ports.
- Restrict Scope to the required computers or network ranges.
- Choose the correct network Profile.
- Select Allow the connection only where appropriate.
- Give the rule a descriptive name and save it.
Firewall changes should be made by an administrator who understands the network’s security policy. Broadly allowing the entire dynamic range from untrusted networks creates unnecessary exposure.
6. Test a domain-join or domain-controller failure
If the error appears while joining a domain, inspect:

C:WindowsDebugNetSetup.logThis log can show whether Windows located a domain controller and then failed while binding to it with status 0x6BA. A successful domain-controller lookup followed by a failed bind points toward later RPC, directory, firewall, or network communication—not necessarily a stopped local RPC service.
Microsoft’s PortQry checks can help identify blocked ports. PortQry is a separate Microsoft tool and is not included with every Windows 11 installation. After installing it, replace <problem_server> with the domain controller’s name:
portqry -n <problem_server> -e 135
portqry -n <problem_server> -e 445
portqry -n <problem_server> -e 389
portqry -n <problem_server> -p UDP -e 389
portqry -n <problem_server> -r 49152:65535Results showing that a port is filtered or unreachable should be investigated on the relevant host firewall, network firewall, VPN, or ACL.
7. Check the service belonging to the affected application
Some applications use RPC but fail because their own service is stopped. In that situation, the generic RPC service may be healthy.
DFS Management
For a DFS Namespace error, open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
Get-Service -Name Dfs
Start-Service -Name DfsAfter starting the service, remove and re-add the namespace in DFS Management, or close and reopen the console.
WMI, backup, and remote-management tools
Check the product’s service requirements and firewall documentation. Remote WMI and backup operations may depend on WMI, Remote Registry, SMB, DNS, and application-specific firewall rules. A failure in one of those areas can produce the same RPC message.

- Do not assume the RPC service is the cause. The message identifies an unreachable RPC endpoint, not a single failed service.
- Do not open only TCP 135. Dynamic RPC ports may also be required.
- Do not enable Remote Registry and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper on every PC. Those services are relevant to a specific Microsoft-documented domain-logon pattern, not every Windows 11 RPC failure.
- Do not disable Windows Firewall permanently. Create narrowly scoped rules and investigate third-party firewalls and network devices.
- Do not expect SFC to repair networking. SFC and DISM address Windows file or image corruption; they do not fix DNS, routing, ports, or domain-controller availability.
Recommended order for a quick diagnosis
- Record which application or operation displays the message.
- Check the relevant service and the application-specific service in
services.msc. - Run
nslookupagainst the target computer or domain controller. - Check
ipconfig /all, the network connection, VPN, and domain time settings. - Verify TCP 135, the dynamic RPC range, and any required SMB or LDAP ports.
- Review
C:WindowsDebugNetSetup.logfor domain-join failures. - Run DISM and SFC if Windows system-file corruption is plausible.
- Escalate to the network or domain administrator when the blocked endpoint is outside your Windows 11 computer.
Microsoft’s references for the error are written for supported Windows Server scenarios, particularly Active Directory. The same RPC, DNS, firewall, and command-line principles apply to Windows 11 clients, but domain-controller and enterprise firewall changes may require an administrator.

What does “The RPC server is unavailable” mean on Windows 11?
It is error 0x6BA, meaning Windows could not contact the RPC endpoint required by an operation. The RPC service itself may still be running; DNS, firewall ports, network routing, time settings, or an application-specific service can also be responsible.
Will restarting the Remote Procedure Call service fix the error?
Only if that service or a related core service is actually stopped or malfunctioning. Restarting it does not repair incorrect DNS, blocked dynamic RPC ports, a failed domain controller, or a stopped service belonging to the affected application.
Which RPC ports need to be open?
TCP 135 is used by the RPC Endpoint Mapper, and current Windows versions commonly use TCP 49152–65535 for dynamically assigned RPC ports. Domain and remote-management operations may additionally need TCP 445 and TCP/UDP 389, depending on the operation.

No. Use Windows Firewall with Advanced Security to create a narrowly scoped rule with the correct port, profile, and source scope. Also check third-party firewalls, VPN software, router ACLs, and firewalls on the destination computer.
Why does RPC fail when joining a domain?
Common causes include incorrect domain DNS, a blocked connection to the domain controller, incorrect time or time-zone settings, and blocked RPC, SMB, or LDAP traffic. Review C:WindowsDebugNetSetup.log and test the domain controller’s required ports.
The Bottom Line
Start with the affected application and its service, then verify DNS and network reachability before changing firewall rules. For domain operations, check the domain DNS server, clock, domain-controller ports, and NetSetup.log. Use DISM and SFC only when Windows image or system-file corruption is a realistic possibility. The error is a connectivity symptom, not proof that the core RPC service is stopped.
