To download GlobalProtect for Windows 11, use your organization’s GlobalProtect portal rather than searching for a public installer. Palo Alto Networks does not provide a universal direct download link for the standard enterprise Windows client. Your employer, school, or VPN administrator must provide the portal address and the version approved for its firewall or Prisma Access deployment.
The current compatibility matrix lists GlobalProtect app versions 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3 as supporting Windows 11 on 64-bit x64 and ARM64 devices. GlobalProtect 5.x releases are end-of-life, including 5.1.x on December 31, 2024, and 5.2.x on February 28, 2024.
What you need before downloading
Ask your GlobalProtect administrator for the following information:
- The GlobalProtect portal IP address or fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
- The username and password used to sign in to the portal and VPN gateways.
- The Windows installer version required by your organization.
- Whether your Windows 11 PC uses x64 or ARM64 architecture, if the portal offers separate downloads.
The portal address normally uses this format:
https://<portal IP address or FQDN>You also need administrator rights on Windows for the initial installation. You do not normally need administrator rights for later GlobalProtect upgrades.

Check whether your Windows 11 PC is x64 or ARM64
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Look at System type.
Most Intel- and AMD-based PCs use x64. Windows 11 devices with ARM processors use ARM64. Select the matching installer on the portal. If your organization supplies only one approved package, use that package instead of choosing a different version yourself.
Download GlobalProtect from your organization’s portal
- Open a web browser and go to your portal address, such as
https://vpn.example.com. - On the portal login page, enter your Name and Password.
- Click LOG IN.
- When the app download page appears, select the software link for your Windows architecture.
Some organizations enable GlobalProtect Clientless VPN access. In that configuration, signing in first opens an applications page rather than the installer page. Select GlobalProtect Agent to open the download page, then select the Windows download.
Download only from the portal supplied by your organization. A random installer from a third-party download site may be the wrong release, may not support your Windows architecture, or may not be compatible with the organization’s gateway.

- Open the downloaded installation file from your browser’s download list or the Downloads folder.
- When Windows asks whether to run the file, click Run.
- When the GlobalProtect Setup Wizard prompt appears, click Run again.
- In the setup wizard, click Next.
- Leave the default installation folder selected and click Next. The default path is:
C:Program FilesPalo Alto NetworksGlobalProtect - Click Next twice more.
- When setup completes, click Close.
The default folder is recommended by Palo Alto Networks because it is read-only for non-privileged users, which helps reduce unauthorized modification of the application. The official installation procedure does not require a Command Prompt, PowerShell command, or other command-line instruction.
Connect to the VPN for the first time
- Find the GlobalProtect icon in the Windows system tray. If it is hidden, click the small up-arrow beside the tray icons.
- Click the GlobalProtect icon to open its status panel.
- For the first connection, enter the organization’s portal IP address or domain.
- Click Connect.
- If prompted, enter your Username and Password, then click Sign In. Depending on the portal configuration, you may also need to click Connect after entering your credentials.
A successful connection shows Connected or Connected – Internal. The external connection icon uses a shield, while an internal connection uses a house. A gray icon showing Not Connected when you hover over it means the VPN is not active.
If the organization requires acceptance of terms of service, accept the terms when the page appears. GlobalProtect cannot connect until the required terms are accepted.
Change the portal or gateway
In GlobalProtect 6.3, the current labels are:
- Change Portal — select this when more than one portal has been configured.
- Change Gateway — select this when the administrator permits manual gateway selection.
The app normally selects the most recently connected portal. The gateway defaults to Best Available. You will not necessarily see a gateway list: manual gateway selection is available only if the administrator has enabled it.
To open the app settings, click the GlobalProtect tray icon, open the hamburger menu, and select Settings. The settings panel can include Connections, Preferences, and Troubleshooting. The Preferences tab appears only when the administrator has enabled at least one preference-related option.

Fix common Windows 11 installation problems
Windows blocks the installer with SmartScreen
Windows Defender SmartScreen may display a warning for a GlobalProtect installer. If you obtained the installer from the organization’s genuine portal and have confirmed it with your administrator, select More Info, then Run.
The installer reports a Visual C++ problem
GlobalProtect requires Visual C++ Redistributables 12.0.3 for Visual Studio 2013. If no compatible redistributable is installed, GlobalProtect can install version 12.0.3 automatically.
If the PC already has Visual C++ Redistributables version 12.0.2 or earlier, uninstall the older package or upgrade it to version 12.0.3 before installing GlobalProtect. Restart the installer after making that change.

On systems configured with Enforce GlobalProtect for Network Access, an upgrade can fail if multiple msiexec.exe processes are running at the same time. This is an installer conflict, not necessarily an incorrect portal address.

- Restart the PC.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then select Task Manager.
- Look for third-party
msiexecinstaller processes. - Select the applicable third-party installer and click End Task.
- If needed, restore or reinstall the older GlobalProtect version, then retry the upgrade.
Contact the administrator before removing a managed VPN client if the device is company-owned or enforcement has blocked all network traffic.
When GlobalProtect installs but will not connect

For portal, credential, certificate, gateway, or policy errors, the organization’s GlobalProtect administrator is the right point of contact. Those settings are controlled on the firewall or Prisma Access deployment and cannot normally be fixed by reinstalling the Windows app.

Do not assume that the newest installer is automatically correct. The required app version depends on the organization’s deployment. Although GlobalProtect 6.0 through 6.3 support Windows 11 on x64 and ARM64, the firewall or Prisma Access service may require a specific release.

What is the GlobalProtect portal address?

Why do I not see a GlobalProtect download after signing in?
If Clientless VPN access is enabled, the portal may open an applications page. Select GlobalProtect Agent there to open the Windows download page.
