Twitter is now called X, and its official website is x.com. On Windows 11, X does not currently provide a standard official desktop .exe installer. The safest options are to use X in a browser or install x.com as a browser-powered web app, which gives you a separate window and Start-menu shortcut.
This tutorial covers Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, explains what to check in the Microsoft Store, and shows how to avoid unofficial downloads that may contain unwanted software.
Option 1: Use X directly in a Windows 11 browser
You do not need to install anything to use X on your PC.
- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another supported browser.
- Type
https://x.comin the address bar and press Enter. - Select Sign in to use an existing account.
- If you need an account, select Sign up. You can also go directly to
https://x.com/signupand register with an email address or phone number.
Before entering your password, check the address bar. It should begin with https://x.com, not a similarly named third-party domain.

Option 2: Install X as an app with Microsoft Edge
Edge can install a website as a web app. This creates a separate app-style window and can add X to the Start menu, taskbar, or desktop. It does not download a native Twitter or X Windows program; the app still uses Edge technology and needs an internet connection for the service.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Visit
https://x.com. - Select the Settings and more button, shown as …, in the upper-right corner.
- Choose More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app.
- Enter a name if Edge asks you to, then select Install.
Depending on the version of Edge and how X is recognized, an App available install icon may also appear at the right side of the address bar. The menu route above is the more reliable method if that icon is missing.
Pin the X web app to Start or the taskbar
- In Edge, enter
edge://appsin the address bar. - Find the X app card.
- Select Details.
- Choose one or more available options, such as Pin to taskbar, Pin to Start, or Create Desktop shortcut.
You may also see an Auto-start on device login option. Enable it only if you want X to launch whenever you sign in to Windows.

Option 3: Install X as a web app with Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to
https://x.com. - Select the three-dot More button in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share > Install page as app….
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the installation.
Chrome may instead show an install icon on the right side of the address bar. Select that icon if it appears, then confirm the installation.
To manage installed Chrome web apps, enter chrome://apps in the address bar. You can also open the app, select its menu button, and choose Uninstall [app name] > Remove.
Can you download X from the Microsoft Store?
Windows 11 normally installs Store apps through Start > Microsoft Store. You search for an app, select it, and choose Get. Windows may ask you to sign in with a Microsoft account.

However, X’s current official download documentation lists mobile downloads for iOS and Android, not a dedicated Windows installer. Therefore, do not assume that every Microsoft Store result named Twitter or X is official. If a result appears, inspect the publisher, description, permissions, reviews, and download source before installing it. For most Windows 11 users, the Edge or Chrome web-app method is the safer and more dependable choice.
Do not download a supposed “official Twitter for Windows” .exe from a random software-download site. A third-party program using the X name or logo may be outdated, ad-supported, or malicious.
Why the Amazon Appstore is not a current solution
The Amazon Appstore and Windows Subsystem for Android are no longer available through the Microsoft Store beginning March 5, 2025. They should not be presented as a current way to install the Android version of X on Windows 11.

How to uninstall the X web app
Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and go to
edge://apps. - Find the X app.
- Select Details.
- Select Uninstall, then confirm.
You can also remove its Start-menu or desktop shortcut without uninstalling the web app. Removing the shortcut does not necessarily remove the installed app.
Google Chrome
- Open the installed X app.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Uninstall [app name].
- Select Remove to confirm.

Can I install Twitter from the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11?
