Windows 11 does not provide a ClearType switch in the Settings app. The control is still available in the separate ClearType Text Tuner, which you can open from Start search or by running cttune.exe.
ClearType affects how Windows renders text on LCD and similar displays. It is separate from installed-font management, screen scaling, and display resolution.
Turn ClearType on or off from Start search
- Select Start, or press the Windows key.
- Type
Adjust ClearType text. - Select the result named Adjust ClearType text. This opens ClearType Text Tuner.
- To enable ClearType, select Turn on ClearType. To disable it, clear the checkbox.
- Select Next and follow the sample-text wizard to finish applying the setting.
The sample pages are part of the tuner. Complete the wizard rather than closing it immediately after changing the checkbox.

| Commonly suggested location | What is actually there |
|---|---|
| Settings > Personalization > Fonts | Installed-font management, including font previews, hiding fonts, uninstalling fonts, and installing new fonts. It does not turn ClearType on or off. |
| Settings > System > Display > Advanced display | Display information and refresh-rate-related controls. Current Windows 11 display settings do not provide a ClearType toggle there. |
| Settings > System > Display > Scale & layout | Scaling and resolution controls. These affect the size and sharpness of the whole display, not the ClearType setting. |
Microsoft’s current documentation separates font management under Personalization > Fonts and display controls under System > Display. The ClearType setting remains in the legacy tuner.
What to check if text is still blurry
Turning ClearType off will not fix every type of blurry text. Check these settings and hardware conditions:
Rank #3
- Vibrant Images: Crisp, true-to-life colors come alive in Full HD 1080p resolution. Movies and games appear more real and dramatic, and small details and text are clear with 1920x1080 resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Up 100Hz Refresh Rate: The 100Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 100Hz, Acer Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. Fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a KB220Q monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
- Use the monitor’s native resolution. Open Settings > System > Display and inspect Display resolution. Microsoft notes that a resolution below the monitor’s native resolution makes text less sharp.
- Check display scaling. Under Scale & layout, try the recommended scale first. Extreme or application-specific scaling can make some text appear soft.
- Check the cable and monitor input. A loose or damaged cable, an unsuitable adapter, or an incorrect monitor input mode can affect image quality.
- Check the viewing angle and monitor settings. Panel characteristics, contrast, brightness, gamma, and color calibration can change how text appears.
- Retune ClearType. Run
cttune.exeagain and choose the sharpest sample at each stage. The best choices can differ between monitors.
ClearType is only one part of text rendering. Resolution, monitor hardware, cabling, viewing angle, contrast, and color or gamma calibration are separate possible causes of blur.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 support
The current Microsoft pages covering fonts and display settings apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. They do not identify an edition-specific restriction for the ClearType Text Tuner. The fact that Microsoft’s explicitly worded ClearType support article originated in the Windows 8 era does not mean that ClearType has moved into a Windows 11 Settings page.

- ALL-EXPANSIVE VIEW: The three-sided borderless display brings a clean and modern aesthetic to any working environment; In a multi-monitor setup, the displays line up seamlessly for a virtually gapless view without distractions
- SYNCHRONIZED ACTION: AMD FreeSync keeps your monitor and graphics card refresh rate in sync to reduce image tearing; Watch movies and play games without any interruptions; Even fast scenes look seamless and smooth.
- SEAMLESS, SMOOTH VISUALS: The 75Hz refresh rate ensures every frame on screen moves smoothly for fluid scenes without lag; Whether finalizing a work presentation, watching a video or playing a game, content is projected without any ghosting effect
- MORE GAMING POWER: Optimized game settings instantly give you the edge; View games with vivid color and greater image contrast to spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view
- SUPERIOR EYE CARE: Advanced eye comfort technology reduces eye strain for less strenuous extended computing; Flicker Free technology continuously removes tiring and irritating screen flicker, while Eye Saver Mode minimizes emitted blue light
In short, use Adjust ClearType text or cttune.exe; do not look for a ClearType switch under Fonts or Advanced display.
