Minecraft Bedrock Edition does not install Java Edition .jar mods through a mods folder. Its supported customization system is called Add-Ons. Add-Ons are built from Resource Packs, Behavior Packs, Skin Packs, or combinations of them.
This guide explains how to install Bedrock Add-Ons on Windows, Android, and iPhone/iPad, how to activate them in a world, and how to move an Add-On-enabled world to a console through a Realm.
What counts as a “mod” in Bedrock Edition?
In Bedrock terminology, the files commonly called mods are usually Add-Ons:

Do not download a Java mod expecting it to work on Bedrock. A Java .jar file is made for a different edition and loader system.

Before installing an Add-On
- Check that the download is intended for Minecraft Bedrock, not Java Edition.
- Check the Minecraft version listed by the creator. Older packs may import but fail to work correctly after a game update.
- Keep a backup of any world before adding a Behavior Pack or replacing its files.
- Use a trusted download source. An Add-On is still a file downloaded from the internet, so scan unexpected executables and do not run files that are not part of the pack.
Install a Bedrock Add-On on Windows
Method 1: Open the downloaded file
This is the normal installation method for a valid .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld file.
- Download the Add-On using a browser.
- Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the download, usually Downloads.
- Double-click the
.mcpack,.mcaddon, or.mcworldfile. - Allow Windows to open it with Minecraft when prompted.
- Wait for Minecraft to display an import message. Large packs may take a little longer.
A .mcpack is added to the appropriate pack list. A .mcworld is imported as a world and should appear in the Play menu.
What to do with a ZIP download
A ZIP is not automatically recognized as an Add-On. First inspect it. If it contains a valid Bedrock pack or world, Microsoft’s documented procedure is to change the extension to the correct type before opening it.

- In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions.
- Right-click the ZIP and select Rename.
- Change only the ending, for example
my-pack.ziptomy-pack.mcpackormy-world.mcworld. - Accept the warning about changing the file extension.
- Open the renamed file.
Renaming an arbitrary ZIP does not convert it into a valid Add-On. If the archive has the wrong folder structure, no valid manifest, or contains a Java mod, Minecraft will not import it correctly.
Activate the Add-On in a new Windows world
Importing a pack and activating it are separate steps. Use the following menu path:
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and select Play.
- Select Create New World.
- In the world settings, scroll to Add-Ons.
- Select Behavior Packs or Resource Packs, depending on the Add-On.
- Open the MY PACKS drop-down.
- Select the imported pack and choose Activate.
- If the Add-On includes both types, activate the required Behavior Pack and Resource Pack.
- Select Create.
A Behavior Pack changes game logic, entities, recipes, loot, functions, or similar behavior. A Resource Pack changes textures, models, sounds, and other visual or audio assets. Some Behavior Packs declare a dependency on a Resource Pack; when that dependency is correct, activating the Behavior Pack can activate the linked Resource Pack automatically.

Activate an Add-On in an existing world
- Open Play.
- Find the world and select the pencil-shaped Edit button.
- Scroll to Add-Ons.
- Open Behavior Packs or Resource Packs.
- Select MY PACKS, choose the pack, and select Activate.
- Review any warning or dependency message before entering the world.
Make a copy of the world first if the Add-On changes entities, blocks, terrain, recipes, or world generation. Removing a pack later may not restore content that was already saved into the world.
Manual installation and development folders on Windows
Manual copying is mainly useful for packs you are creating or testing. Microsoft’s current Windows location for the Bedrock com.mojang folder is:
%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang- Press Win + R.
- Paste the path above into the Open box.
- Select OK.
Relevant folders inside com.mojang include:
development_behavior_packsdevelopment_resource_packsbehavior_packsresource_packsskin_packsminecraftWorlds
Use the development_ folders for packs being edited and tested. Finalized packs belong in their corresponding non-development folders. A manually copied pack must be unpacked into the correct folder; do not leave the pack buried inside several nested ZIP directories.
Install an Add-On on Android
- Download the
.mcpack,.mcaddon, or.mcworldfile. - Open Minecraft’s Settings.
- Select Storage > Explore.
- Open the download location, usually the Download folder.
- Select the Add-On or world file.
- Choose Minecraft if Android asks which app should open it.
- Wait for the import to finish.
For a pack, activate it from the world’s Add-Ons section. An imported .mcworld should be listed in Play.
Install an Add-On on iPhone or iPad
- Download the Add-On or world file in Safari or another supported browser.
- Tap the completed download.
- When iOS displays the share or open options, select Open in Minecraft.
- Wait for Minecraft to import the file.
- Activate the pack in the world settings, or open the imported world from Play.
If Open in Minecraft is not shown, tap the share button and look through the available apps. The file must also have a Bedrock extension such as .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld.

Consoles do not use the Windows-style process of opening arbitrary .mcpack or .mcaddon files from a file manager. The documented cross-device route is to use a Bedrock world and a Realm:

- Install the Add-On on Windows, Android, or iOS.
- Create or edit a Bedrock world and activate the Add-On.
- Upload that Add-On-enabled world to a Realm.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the console.
- Open the Realm world from Minecraft on the console.
The Add-On is part of the uploaded world, so the console can load the world with its enabled content. This does not mean that the original pack file has been directly installed into the console’s storage.
Fix an Add-On that does not appear
If the pack is missing from MY PACKS, the problem is usually the file type, manifest, or folder structure.
Check the extension
Turn on visible file extensions in File Explorer. A file named manifest.json.json is not the same as manifest.json. Similarly, a downloaded file that is really pack.mcpack.zip may need to be extracted or renamed correctly.

A valid pack normally has manifest.json at the pack’s top level. It should not be hidden under an extra folder such as:
my-packmy-packmanifest.jsonPack directories are exact. For example, a function directory is named function, not functions, and it contains .mcfunction files. Incorrect names and locations prevent Bedrock from finding the content.
Check the manifest
Open manifest.json in a code editor and check that:

- The JSON braces, brackets, commas, and quotation marks are valid.
- The file is actually named
manifest.json. - The header UUID and module UUID are different.
- Any declared dependency uses the correct UUID for the related pack.
Preview Minecraft 1.21.110 and later introduced manifest interface version 3. That version has additional requirements, including metadata.author in the current documented Preview behavior. Do not change a stable pack to version 3 merely because it fails to import; first check which game version and manifest format the pack was built for.

Fix an Add-On that appears but does nothing
An activated pack can still fail at runtime. Work through these checks:
- Look for a red exclamation point. An active Behavior Pack with one has a load or dependency error. Open its diagnostic information for details.
- Check dependencies. A Behavior Pack that expects a Resource Pack will not work correctly if the dependency UUID is wrong or the related pack is missing.
- Check pack stacking. Another pack may override the same entity, texture, or behavior. Move the intended pack above competing packs where the game allows pack ordering.
- Check names and paths. Misspelled folders such as an incorrectly placed
entitiesfolder, or incorrect entity and file names, can make a pack appear active while its content is ignored. - Test in a new world. Some changes do not apply cleanly to an existing world, especially changes involving generation or saved entities.
- Check the creator’s version notes. A pack made for an older Bedrock release may need an update.
Do you need commands or Experimental Features?
No command is required to install or activate a normal Add-On. The import process uses the file association, and activation uses the world settings menus. Commands such as /give and /setblock may be useful for testing custom items or blocks after installation, but they do not import a pack.
Experimental Features are not a universal requirement for every Bedrock Add-On. Use them only when the Add-On’s documentation specifically requires them and when you understand that experimental settings can affect world compatibility.
FAQ
Can I install Java .jar mods on Minecraft Bedrock?
No. Java .jar mods are made for Java Edition and its mod-loader ecosystem. Bedrock uses Add-Ons, including Resource Packs and Behavior Packs.
Where does an imported Bedrock pack appear?
A Resource Pack appears in the world’s Resource Packs tab, and a Behavior Pack appears in the Behavior Packs tab under Add-Ons > MY PACKS. An imported .mcworld appears in the Play menu.

Why does my Add-On not appear in Minecraft?
Check that the file has a valid .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld extension, that manifest.json is correctly named, that the JSON is valid, and that the pack is not buried inside an extra folder.
Can I install a Bedrock Add-On directly on Xbox or PlayStation?
The documented cross-device method is to activate the Add-On in a Bedrock world on Windows or mobile, upload that world to a Realm, and open the Realm world on the console. Directly importing arbitrary pack files on consoles is not the standard documented procedure.
Do all Bedrock Add-Ons require Experimental Features?
No. Experimental Features are not required universally. Follow the specific Add-On’s instructions and enable them only when required.
What is the current Windows com.mojang folder?
Open Run with Win + R and use %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang. This is the current path documented by Microsoft; older guides may show a different location.
The Bottom Line
For Bedrock Edition, download a valid .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld, open it with Minecraft, and activate the imported pack from Play > Create New World > Settings > Add-Ons. Do not use Java .jar files or assume that renaming any ZIP will make it an Add-On. If the pack is missing or inactive, inspect its extension, manifest, dependencies, folder names, and pack order.
