Windows copy-and-paste is usually a three-key operation: select content, press Ctrl+C, move to the destination, then press Ctrl+V. The same workflow works for text, files, folders, images, and many other items, although terminals, password fields, remote sessions, and individual applications can change the behavior.

This guide covers the standard keyboard shortcuts, Clipboard history, formatted and plain-text pasting, File Explorer, Command Prompt, PowerShell, and the most common reasons pasting fails.

The essential Windows copy-and-paste shortcuts

Shortcut What it does
Ctrl+C Copies the selected text, file, folder, image, or other content.
Ctrl+Insert Copies selected text or items. This is useful in some older applications and command-line windows.
Ctrl+X Cuts the selection. The original is removed or moved when you paste it successfully.
Ctrl+V Pastes the most recently copied or cut item.
Shift+Insert Pastes the most recently copied or cut item.
Ctrl+Shift+V Requests a plain-text paste in applications that support the shortcut.
Ctrl+A Selects all content in the active document, control, or folder.
Ctrl+Z Undoes the last action, including many accidental paste or move operations.

Ctrl+Shift+V is not a universal Windows command. Many browsers, editors, terminals, and web applications support it, but some do not.

How to copy and paste text with the keyboard

  1. Click inside the source application or document.
  2. Select the text. You can drag over it with the mouse or use keyboard selection shortcuts.
  3. Press Ctrl+C.
  4. Switch to the destination window. Alt+Tab moves between open windows.
  5. Click where the text should go, or place the insertion point with the arrow keys.
  6. Press Ctrl+V.

Copying leaves the original text unchanged. Cutting with Ctrl+X removes the selection from the source when the destination accepts the paste.

Useful keyboard selection shortcuts

Shortcut Selection or navigation action
Ctrl+A Select all text in the active document or field.
Shift+arrow key Extends the selection one character or line at a time.
Ctrl+Shift+Left Arrow Selects the previous word.
Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow Selects the next word.
Ctrl+Home Moves to the beginning of a document or text buffer.
Ctrl+End Moves to the end of a document or text buffer.

How to paste without formatting

When you copy from a web page, Word document, email, or formatted editor, the clipboard can contain several versions of the same content. A normal Ctrl+V paste lets the destination application choose a suitable format, often preserving fonts, colors, links, and spacing.

To request only the text, place the cursor in the destination and press Ctrl+Shift+V. This is useful when copying web content into:

  • Command-line windows
  • Plain-text editors
  • Forms that reject rich formatting
  • Documents with strict styles
  • Spreadsheets where unwanted web formatting causes layout problems

If nothing happens, the application probably does not implement that shortcut. Use its Edit or Paste menu, a paste-options button, or paste into Notepad first and then copy the cleaned text.

How to copy and paste files and folders

In File Explorer, the clipboard transfers the selected file or folder as a shell item. It does not mean that the file is stored in Clipboard history like a normal text entry.

Copy files or folders

  1. Press Windows+E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select one or more files or folders.
  3. Press Ctrl+C.
  4. Open the destination folder.
  5. Press Ctrl+V.

The original remains in its current location, and Windows creates a copy in the destination.

Move files or folders

  1. Open File Explorer and select the items.
  2. Press Ctrl+X.
  3. Navigate to the destination folder.
  4. Press Ctrl+V.

Use Ctrl+X when you want to move the item instead of creating a duplicate. The result can depend on permissions and whether the source and destination are on different drives or storage locations.

Helpful File Explorer shortcuts

Shortcut Action
Windows+E Open File Explorer.
Ctrl+N Open another File Explorer window.
Ctrl+Shift+N Create a new folder.
F2 Rename the selected item.
Alt+Enter Open Properties for the selected item.
Alt+D Select the address bar.
Ctrl+F or Ctrl+E Select the File Explorer search box.

Quick access can cause confusion because it is a navigation view rather than a normal folder. If an item is displayed under Quick access, open its actual location before cutting and pasting it.

Use Clipboard history to paste older items

Normal Ctrl+V pastes the latest clipboard item. Clipboard history lets you choose from several recent entries.

Turn on Clipboard history

  1. Press Windows+V.
  2. If history is disabled, select Turn on.

Clipboard history is not enabled by default. After enabling it, copy several text, HTML, or bitmap items and press Windows+V in a destination field. Select an entry in the panel to paste it.

Clipboard history limits

  • It stores up to 25 copied entries.
  • Each item is limited to 4 MB.
  • Older unpinned entries are removed as new entries are added.
  • Unpinned entries are cleared when the PC restarts.
  • Pinned entries are retained after a restart.
  • Supported history formats include text, HTML, and bitmap data.

These limits apply to Clipboard history. They do not necessarily describe every type of data that the normal Windows clipboard can transfer.

Pin, delete, or clear clipboard entries

  1. Press Windows+V.
  2. Select the See more (…) button beside an entry.
  3. Choose Pin or Delete, where available.

To remove all unpinned entries, open the panel with Windows+V and select Clear all.

In Windows 11, you can also clear clipboard data through Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Under Clear clipboard data, select Clear. Pinned entries are not removed by this operation.

Sync clipboard content between Windows devices

Clipboard synchronization requires the same Microsoft account or work account on the devices. It primarily synchronizes copied text, not every possible clipboard format.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Clipboard.
  3. Turn on Clipboard history across your devices.
  4. Choose Automatically sync text that I copy, or select Manually sync text that I copy.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
  2. Turn on Sync across devices.

The labels differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 PCs continue to operate, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it.

Some applications intentionally mark sensitive data so it is not saved in Clipboard history or uploaded to another device.

Copy and paste in Windows Terminal

Windows Terminal has configurable key bindings, so its behavior is not identical to an ordinary text editor.

Shortcut Typical Terminal action
Ctrl+Shift+C Copy the selected terminal text.
Ctrl+C Copies selected text in configurations that use it; without a selection, it can be sent to the shell as an interrupt.
Ctrl+Insert Copy selected text.
Enter Copy an active selection in Mark mode.
Ctrl+V Paste.
Ctrl+Shift+V Paste in configurations that assign this binding.
Shift+Insert Paste.

To select terminal text, drag across it. Double-click selects a word, triple-click selects a line, and holding Alt while selecting creates a rectangular block selection. Right-click behavior depends on Terminal’s interaction settings.

Do not press Ctrl+C in a terminal assuming it always copies. With no selection, it may interrupt a running command.

Copy and paste in Command Prompt and PowerShell

Command Prompt

In traditional Command Prompt, Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Insert copies selected text. Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert pastes. Ctrl+M enters Mark mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no text is selected, Ctrl+C can interrupt a running command. Select the output first if your intention is to copy it.

PowerShell

In PowerShell’s Windows editing mode, Ctrl+V and Shift+Insert paste clipboard contents into the command line. Keyboard paste inserts the clipboard into the input buffer before parsing. Some console right-click paste behavior can insert text one character at a time and may cause input to be processed line by line, so keyboard paste is generally the safer choice for multi-line commands.

Copy text to the clipboard from the command line

Command Prompt: use clip

The clip command copies command output or the contents of a file to the Windows clipboard:

dir | clip

To copy a text file:

clip < readme.txt

clip copies text to the clipboard; it does not paste clipboard contents into a file or application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PowerShell: use Set-Clipboard

To place a string in the clipboard:

Set-Clipboard -Value "This is a test string"

To copy a public SSH key:

Get-Content C:Usersuser1.sshid_ed25519.pub | Set-Clipboard

By default, Set-Clipboard replaces the current clipboard contents. The -Append option adds content after the existing contents with a newline. PowerShell 7.4 and later also support -AsOSC52 for sending clipboard data to the local machine during a supported SSH session.

Why copy and paste may not work

Symptom Likely cause or fix
Paste is unavailable Nothing was copied, the copy operation failed, or the destination does not accept that item.
File copy reports access denied You do not have write permission, or the destination is protected.
Windows asks about duplicate names A file or folder with the same name already exists. Choose to replace, skip, or rename it.
Cloud or network files behave differently The file may be an offline placeholder, or the source or destination may be disconnected.
Clipboard history does not show an item The item may exceed 4 MB, use an unsupported format, be excluded by the application, or be a file object rather than a history-supported text/image entry.
Paste fails between local and remote sessions Remote Desktop, virtual-machine settings, or organization policy may disable clipboard redirection.

Also check that the destination has focus. A shortcut affects the active window or control, so pressing Ctrl+V while the wrong window is active can appear to do nothing.

Secure password fields

Some password fields deliberately block paste. In particular, pasting into a UAC password box on the secure desktop is blocked by design because clipboard access there could expose clipboard contents to an unauthorized user. Password managers and websites may impose their own restrictions as well.

That behavior does not necessarily indicate a damaged clipboard. Try pasting into a harmless text editor to determine whether the clipboard itself works, but do not paste sensitive passwords into an untrusted application just for testing.

  2. Select the exact text or item you need.
  3. Press Ctrl+C to copy or Ctrl+X to cut.
  4. Use Alt+Tab or open the destination.
  5. Focus the destination field or folder.
  6. Press Ctrl+V.
  7. Use Windows+V if you need an older clipboard entry.
  8. Use Ctrl+Shift+V for plain text when the destination supports it.

How do I paste something I copied earlier?

Press Windows+V to open Clipboard history, then select the older entry. Clipboard history must be enabled first, and it normally stores up to 25 entries.

How do I paste without formatting in Windows?

Press Ctrl+Shift+V in an application that supports plain-text paste. The shortcut is not implemented everywhere.

Why does Ctrl+C stop my Command Prompt command?

In Command Prompt and some terminal configurations, Ctrl+C interrupts a running command when no text is selected. Select the output first, or use Ctrl+Insert where supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a copied item missing from Clipboard history?

Clipboard history has a 4 MB per-item limit and supports documented formats such as text, HTML, and bitmap data. The application may also exclude sensitive content, or the copied item may be a File Explorer shell object rather than a history entry.

Can I copy and paste between two Windows PCs?

Yes, Clipboard synchronization can share copied text between devices using the same Microsoft or work account. In Windows 11, use Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history across your devices. In Windows 10, enable Sync across devices in the same Clipboard settings area.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows applications, the reliable sequence is Ctrl+C, switch windows, then Ctrl+V. Use Ctrl+X to move files or text, Windows+V to retrieve an older item, and Ctrl+Shift+V for plain text where supported. If a shortcut fails, check the active window, the application’s own key bindings, permissions, security restrictions, and any Remote Desktop or organizational policy.
