The quickest way to open the System32 folder in Windows 11 or Windows 10 is to open Run with Windows + R, enter %windir%System32, and press Enter.

Using %windir% is more reliable than typing C:Windows. It resolves to the actual Windows installation directory, even when Windows is installed on another drive or in a non-standard folder.

2. Open System32 with the Run dialog

This is usually the fastest method.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type %windir%System32.
  3. Press Enter or select OK.

Windows passes the path to the shell and opens it in File Explorer. You do not normally need administrator privileges just to view the folder.

You can also explicitly tell Run to start File Explorer:

explorer.exe "%windir%System32"

The quotation marks are useful when a path could contain spaces. They are not normally necessary for the standard Windows directory, but keeping them makes the command safer to reuse.

3. Open System32 through Windows Search

Windows Search does not reliably open the folder if you simply search for System32. It may show individual files or results affected by indexing. Use Search to launch File Explorer, then navigate directly to the folder.

  2. Run this command:
explorer.exe "%windir%System32"
  1. Press Enter.

You can also use the Command Prompt start command:

start "" "%windir%System32"

The empty quoted string is intentional. With start, the first quoted argument can be interpreted as the window title. Supplying "" first ensures that the quoted path is treated as the folder to open. See Microsoft’s documentation for the start command.

5. Open System32 with PowerShell or Windows Terminal

PowerShell uses the $env: notation to read Windows environment variables.

Important System32 details

System32 is not the 32-bit folder

On 64-bit Windows, %windir%System32 contains the native 64-bit system files. The 32-bit system files are generally in %windir%SysWOW64. The names are historical and can be confusing.

There is another complication: a 32-bit program accessing %windir%System32 may be redirected to %windir%SysWOW64. Microsoft provides %windir%Sysnative as a special alias that lets a 32-bit process access the native system directory. Sysnative is a virtual alias, not a normal folder that 64-bit applications can browse to.

Opening the folder does not grant permission to modify it

You can normally browse System32 without elevation. Replacing, deleting, or changing protected files is different and may require administrator approval or additional access rights. Do not broadly take ownership of the folder or change its permissions: doing so can interfere with Windows servicing and system stability.

If File Explorer will not start

Use the Task Manager method and run:

explorer.exe "%windir%System32"

If Explorer continues to fail, Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for Windows updates and restarting the device, among other troubleshooting steps.

The command to remember

For Run, Command Prompt, or Task Manager, use:

explorer.exe "%windir%System32"

For PowerShell, use:

explorer.exe "$env:windirSystem32"

Both commands open the actual System32 directory without assuming that Windows is installed at C:Windows.

FAQ

What is the quickest way to open System32 in Windows 10 or 11?

Press Windows + R, enter %windir%System32, and press Enter. File Explorer will open the folder.

Do I need administrator permission to open System32?

No. Administrator permission is normally not required to browse the folder. Windows may require elevation when you try to modify, replace, delete, or run certain protected files.

Why does System32 contain 64-bit files?

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. The 32-bit files are generally stored in SysWOW64, despite the historical names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use C:WindowsSystem32 instead?

Usually, yes, but that path assumes Windows is installed in C:Windows. %windir%System32 is safer because it resolves to the Windows directory configured on that computer.

What should I do if File Explorer is not working?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, choose Run new task in Windows 11 or File > Run new task in Windows 10, then run explorer.exe "%windir%System32".

The Bottom Line

For most users, press Windows + R and run %windir%System32. If you are working from a shell or Task Manager, use explorer.exe "%windir%System32". These commands work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 and do not assume a fixed Windows installation path.
