Microsoft Edge now labels this option Use graphics acceleration when available. It controls whether Edge uses the computer’s GPU for tasks such as video decoding, page rendering, animations, and graphics-heavy web applications. The setting can improve performance, but an incompatible GPU driver or graphics stack can also cause black video, flickering, freezes, crashes, or display problems.
This guide shows how to enable or disable it through Edge Settings, how to test the change from the command line, and how to verify which video decoder Edge is actually using.
Enable or disable graphics acceleration from Edge Settings
This is the standard and persistent method. It works on desktop versions of Edge, including Windows and macOS.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Settings and more button (the three dots) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open System and performance.
- Under System, find Use graphics acceleration when available.
- Turn the switch on to enable acceleration or off to disable it.
- Select Restart when Edge displays the restart prompt. If no prompt appears, close all Edge windows and open the browser again.
You can go directly to the setting by entering this address in Edge’s address bar:
#1 Best Overall
edge://settings/system
Changing the switch without restarting Edge does not fully apply the new graphics configuration.
What the setting does
When graphics acceleration is enabled, Edge can offload supported work to the GPU instead of performing everything on the CPU. Video playback is one of the most visible examples. Depending on the system, Edge may use a hardware decoder for formats such as H.264, reducing CPU usage during playback.
Acceleration is not an all-or-nothing guarantee. Edge chooses the rendering or decoding path separately for different features. A computer may use hardware acceleration for compositing while using software decoding for a particular video format.
| Setting | Typical result | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Enabled | Edge uses the GPU for supported graphics and video tasks. | Video playback is smooth and the GPU driver works correctly. |
| Disabled | Edge avoids GPU acceleration and relies more heavily on software processing. | You see flickering, black video, crashes, tearing, or problems with a dock or external monitor. |
Check whether Edge is using hardware acceleration
- Enter
edge://gpuin the address bar. - Find the Graphics Feature Status section.
- For video playback, inspect Video Decode.
If Video Decode says Hardware accelerated, Edge is using the GPU for that feature. Other entries may say Software only, Disabled, or Unavailable. That mixture is normal: every feature does not have to report hardware acceleration for the GPU to be working.
The result depends on the operating system, Edge’s compatibility rules, the GPU model, and the installed graphics driver. If acceleration is enabled but Video Decode remains software-only, update the GPU driver, restart Edge, and check the page again.
Use --disable-gpu for a temporary test
Chromium-based browsers support the --disable-gpu command-line switch. It starts Edge with GPU acceleration disabled for that launch. This is useful for confirming whether a visual problem is GPU-related.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows Run dialog
- Close Edge completely.
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter:
msedge.exe --disable-gpu
If Windows cannot find the executable, use its full path. Common paths are:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu
On some 64-bit installations, use:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu
Windows shortcut
- Right-click an Edge shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Click in the Target field and add a space followed by
--disable-gpuafter the closing quotation mark.
For example:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start Edge using that shortcut.
Do not put the switch inside the quotation marks surrounding the executable path.
macOS Terminal
Close Edge, open Terminal, and run:
open -a "Microsoft Edge" --args --disable-gpu
Linux Terminal
For the stable channel, run:
microsoft-edge --disable-gpu
Depending on the installed channel, the command may instead be:
microsoft-edge-stable --disable-gpu
microsoft-edge-beta --disable-gpu
microsoft-edge-dev --disable-gpu
The command-line switch does not permanently change the Edge Settings toggle. To make GPU acceleration remain disabled, start Edge with the switch, open edge://settings/system, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, and restart Edge normally.
When should you disable acceleration?
Try disabling it if Edge exhibits problems that disappear in another browser or after starting Edge with --disable-gpu, including:

Disabling acceleration may increase CPU use, reduce battery life, make animations less smooth, and move video decoding from the GPU to software. If the problem is caused by an old or faulty driver, updating the driver is usually a better long-term fix than leaving acceleration disabled.
Find the video decoder Edge is using
If the setting appears correct but video playback still behaves unexpectedly, open:
edge://media-internals
Look for the active video player and its decoder. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies these common entries:
| Decoder | Meaning |
|---|---|
FFmpegVideoDecoder |
Software video decoding. |
D3D11VideoDecoder |
Hardware decoding through Direct3D 11 on supported Windows systems. |
MediaFoundationVideoDecoder |
Hardware or operating-system media decoding, depending on the format and system. |
Hardware acceleration can be enabled while a specific video uses software decoding. This can happen when the GPU driver does not support the required profile, when the format is unsupported, or when Edge has blocked a hardware path for compatibility.
HEVC playback is a separate issue
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) does not always behave like H.264. On Windows, Edge relies on the Windows Media Foundation path for HEVC. A missing, invalid, or third-party HEVC Video Extension license can prevent Edge from decoding HEVC video, even if the same content plays in another browser.
One possible diagnostic message in edge://gpu is:
Failed to create HEVC decoder instance, License check for app failed (0xC00DB3B3)
That error points to an HEVC licensing or Windows media-component problem rather than simply an enabled-or-disabled acceleration setting.

Windows Group Policy
In the Group Policy editor, go to:
Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge
Configure Use graphics acceleration when available. The policy uses the MSEdge.admx template and applies to Edge 77 and later on Windows and macOS.
Windows Registry
The corresponding Windows policy value is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
Create or edit this value:
Name: HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled
Type: REG_DWORD
1 = enabled
0 = disabled
Registry changes require an Edge restart. Do not edit the registry unless you are comfortable restoring it or your organization’s administrator has provided the policy.
macOS managed preferences
Managed macOS deployments use the key:
HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled
An enabled value is represented as:
<true/>
This policy is not supported on Edge for Android or iOS. Those mobile versions do not expose the same desktop graphics-acceleration switch.
Quick troubleshooting sequence
- Open
edge://settings/system. - Toggle Use graphics acceleration when available off or on.
- Restart Edge completely.
- Open
edge://gpuand inspect Video Decode. - Open
edge://media-internalswhile a video is playing and identify the decoder. - Update the GPU driver if the result is unexpected.
- Test Edge with
--disable-gpuif you need to isolate a graphics-driver problem.
FAQ
Is “Use hardware acceleration when available” still the name of the Edge setting?
Microsoft’s current label is Use graphics acceleration when available. Older Edge instructions may use the former “hardware acceleration” wording, but they refer to the same general browser setting.

Why does edge://gpu show both hardware and software entries?
Edge evaluates graphics features independently. Some features may be hardware accelerated while others are software-only, disabled, or unavailable. You do not need every entry to say “Hardware accelerated.”
Does –disable-gpu permanently disable acceleration?
No. The switch affects the Edge session started with that command. For a persistent change, use edge://settings/system and turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
Why is Edge still using software video decoding when acceleration is enabled?
The GPU driver may not support the video format or required decode profile, or Edge may have disabled that path for compatibility. Check edge://gpu, inspect edge://media-internals, and update the graphics driver.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I change this setting in Edge for Android or iPhone?
No. The desktop graphics-acceleration setting and the HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled management policy are not supported on Android or iOS.
The Bottom Line
For the normal, persistent change, open edge://settings/system, change Use graphics acceleration when available, and restart Edge. Use --disable-gpu only as a temporary diagnostic or launch-specific override. Verify the result in edge://gpu, remembering that Edge can legitimately combine hardware and software paths.
