A .DAT file does not have one universal format. The extension only tells Windows how the filename ends; it does not identify whether the file contains text, video, email data, game data, an installer resource, or a database. The right way to open it depends mainly on where the file came from.
Do not rename file.dat to file.txt or file.mp4 and expect it to convert. Renaming changes the filename, not the file’s contents.
Before opening the file, show its real extension
Windows can hide known file extensions. That can make a file named report.dat.txt appear as report.dat, or conceal another extension that explains what the file really is.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View.
- In the Show or Show/hide section, enable File name extensions.
Now check the complete filename before deciding which application to use.

1. Identify where the DAT file came from
Its source is usually more useful than the extension. Use this guide:
| Where it came from | What to try |
|---|---|
An email attachment named winmail.dat |
Use a TNEF-compatible decoder or ask the sender to resend the message using HTML or plain text. |
| A video recorder, camera, disc, or video download | Try the device’s software or a media player that supports the file’s actual container and codecs. |
| A game, application, installer, or database | Open it with the program that created it. It may be proprietary data and not intended for direct viewing. |
| A text export or configuration file | Try Notepad or another text editor. |
| An unknown download or attachment | Do not execute it. Scan it and inspect it only with a suitable viewer or editor. |
A generic “DAT opener” cannot reliably read every file with a .DAT extension because two DAT files can contain completely different data.
2. Try an installed application with Open with
If you know or suspect which program created the file, use Windows’ file-opening menu:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click the
.DATfile. - Select Open with and then Choose another app.
- Select the appropriate installed application.
- If it is not listed, choose Choose an app on your PC and browse to that application’s executable.
- Click Just once or clear the option to make it the default if you only want to test the program.
For example, a DAT file produced by a particular recorder should be opened with that recorder’s playback software, not automatically with Notepad or a random media player.
3. Search the Microsoft Store for an application
Windows can search the Microsoft Store for applications associated with the extension:
- Right-click the file.
- Choose Open with → Search the Microsoft Store.
- Select OK.
This may show applications associated with .DAT, but the result is not proof that an application understands your particular file’s internal format. Confirm the file’s source and check the application’s description before installing anything.

4. Open a text-based DAT file with Notepad
Some DAT files are ordinary text or structured text. You can inspect one without changing it:
- Right-click the file and select Open with → Choose another app.
- Select Notepad. If necessary, choose Choose an app on your PC and browse to
C:WindowsSystem32notepad.exe. - Read the contents without saving changes.
You can also open Notepad first, press Ctrl+O, change the file filter to show all files, and select the DAT file.
Readable words, lines, commas, XML-style tags, or JSON-like braces suggest that the file may be text-based. Random symbols, blank-looking output, or apparent garbage usually means it is binary or encoded for a particular application. Notepad is not a universal DAT reader, and unreadable output does not necessarily mean the file is damaged.
5. If the DAT file is a video
Some video-related programs use .DAT for video data. First try the player or software supplied with the recorder, camera, disc, or download. You can also test a media player already installed on Windows, but the extension alone does not establish that the file is a video or that the player supports its container and codecs.
Do not rename the file to .MP4 as a first step. If the file is actually a supported video in a container with an unusual extension, a conversion or remuxing tool may help, but you should identify the format first and keep an untouched backup.
6. Special case: opening winmail.dat
winmail.dat is commonly an Outlook or Exchange TNEF attachment. It may contain the original email attachments and message-formatting information. It is not normally useful to open it as plain text.

To recover its contents, use an application or service that specifically supports TNEF decoding. On Windows, you can right-click the file and select Open with to choose an installed TNEF decoder. If you received it by email, another option is to ask the sender to resend the message using HTML or plain text, with the original files attached separately.
Be cautious with confidential email attachments. Uploading winmail.dat to an online decoder sends its contents to a third party, so use an offline decoder when the attachment contains private, financial, work, or personal information.
7. Check the current DAT association from Command Prompt
Windows may have an existing association for .DAT. To inspect it, open Command Prompt and run:
Recommended Free Tools
assoc .dat
The command displays the file type associated with the extension. If it returns a type name, you can inspect the command Windows uses to open that type:
assoc .dat
ftype FileTypeName
Replace FileTypeName with the value returned by the first command. For example, if the output is .dat=SomeFileType, run:
ftype SomeFileType
These commands show an association; they do not identify the internal format of every DAT file. Also, assoc is a cmd.exe command, not a native PowerShell command. From PowerShell, use:

cmd /c assoc .dat
Do not change the association merely to force every DAT file to open in one program. If you deliberately modify associations with assoc, use an elevated Command Prompt and understand that the change affects how Windows handles that extension.

If you have confirmed that this type of DAT always belongs to a particular program, configure the default from Windows Settings:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → Default apps.
- Search for the application, or search for
.datunder file-type associations. - Select the current association and choose the application you want to use.
Using Open with on one known file is safer than assigning every .DAT file to the same application, because the extension is shared by many unrelated formats.
What to do when Windows will not open the file
- “Windows cannot open this file”: identify the creating application instead of repeatedly trying unrelated programs.
- Notepad shows nonsense: the file is probably binary, encoded, compressed, or application-specific. Close it without saving.
- A media player rejects it: it may not be video, or the player may lack support for its actual container or codecs. Try the source device’s software.
- The file is zero bytes: it contains no usable data. Download or export it again.
- The file came from a failed download: obtain a fresh copy from the original source and compare its size if the source provides one.
- The file is locked or in use: close the application that created it, copy it to another folder, and inspect the copy.
- The file contains sensitive data: avoid uploading it to an online viewer or decoder.
Safety precautions
A DAT file is not automatically safe just because it does not end in .EXE. Treat an unknown file as untrusted:
- Keep the original file unchanged and make a copy before testing it.
- Scan the file with your security software.
- Do not rename it to
.EXEor try to execute it. - Do not open application data in a database, game, or recorder program unless you trust the source and understand what that program may do.
- Download viewers and decoders only from reputable sources.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The steps above apply to Windows 11; on an unsupported Windows 10 installation, avoid downloading unknown utilities simply to open an unidentified file.

Can I open a DAT file in Windows 11 without special software?
Sometimes. If it contains plain text, Notepad can display it. Other DAT files require the application that created them, a compatible media player, or a TNEF decoder for winmail.dat attachments.

Will renaming a DAT file to TXT or MP4 convert it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename extension. It does not convert the data or make the file a text document or video.
Why does Notepad show unreadable characters in my DAT file?
The file is likely binary, compressed, encoded, or stored in an application-specific format. Notepad can inspect text-based DAT files but cannot interpret arbitrary binary data.
How do I open a winmail.dat attachment?
Use a TNEF-compatible decoder or ask the sender to resend the email in HTML or plain text with the original attachments included separately. Opening it in Notepad normally will not recover the attachments.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is there one program that opens every DAT file?
No. DAT is a generic extension rather than a single file format. The correct program depends on the file’s source and internal structure.
How can I see which program Windows currently uses for DAT files?
Open Command Prompt and run assoc .dat. If it returns a file type, run ftype FileTypeName with that returned name to view its registered open command.
The Bottom Line
The dependable method is to trace the DAT file to the program or service that created it. Use Notepad only for suspected text files, a media player only for suspected video, and a TNEF decoder for winmail.dat. Keep a backup, avoid renaming the file as a supposed conversion, and do not execute an unknown DAT file.
