You cannot enable Kids Mode in current Microsoft Edge. Microsoft deprecated the feature in Edge 117.0.2045.9, released on August 25, 2023, and now lists it as no longer supported. The former Browse in Kids Mode option, age selections, child-friendly themes, allowlist, and authentication-protected exit screen are no longer part of supported Edge releases.

For safe child browsing today, use Microsoft Family Safety web and search filters with the child’s Microsoft account and Edge.

Why “Browse in Kids Mode” is missing

Older Edge instructions tell you to open the profile menu and select Browse in Kids Mode. That was the correct path when Kids Mode was available, but it is now obsolete. Microsoft removed the feature from the supported product rather than moving it to another Settings page.

Microsoft’s Edge 117 release notes recorded Kids Mode’s deprecation alongside other retired items, including Math Solver, Picture Dictionary, Citations, and Grammar Tools. Microsoft’s current support page is more direct: Kids Mode is no longer supported in Microsoft Edge.

Can an update, registry change, or command restore it?

No supported method restores Kids Mode. Updating Edge will not bring it back, and downgrading to an old build is a poor workaround: it leaves the browser without current security fixes and is not supported by Microsoft.

You may also find advice involving the FamilySafetySettingsEnabled policy. This is an administrative policy documented for managed Edge installations. Its Windows policy location is:

Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge

On Windows, the corresponding registry location is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge

The value is a REG_DWORD named FamilySafetySettingsEnabled. However, this policy is not a consumer switch for reinstalling or resurrecting Kids Mode. Microsoft’s policy documentation describes whether family settings and Kids Mode are hidden in managed deployments, while Microsoft’s current support position is that Kids Mode itself is deprecated.

  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 75 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds

For the same reason, do not treat this command as an enablement command:

reg add HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge /v FamilySafetySettingsEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0

That historical command disables the related policy. It does not restore Kids Mode. There is also no current edge://flags setting or supported command-line switch that enables the retired feature.

Use Microsoft Family Safety instead

Microsoft Family Safety provides the supported way to filter websites and searches for a child using Edge. It is account-based rather than a separate Edge browsing mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements

  • The child must have a Microsoft account.
  • The child’s account must be a member of the Microsoft family group.
  • The child must sign in to Edge with that Microsoft account.
  • The child must use Microsoft Edge for Family Safety web and search filtering to apply.

Set up filtering from the Family Safety website

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Family Safety website using the family organizer’s account.
  2. Select Family Safety in the left-hand menu.
  3. Find the child’s account and select More.
  4. Select Go to overview.
  5. Select Edge as the platform.
  6. Turn on Filter inappropriate websites and searches.
  7. Add individual domains under Blocked Sites or Allowed sites, as appropriate.
  8. For a strict allowlist, turn on Only use allowed websites.
  9. If appropriate, enable Always allow educational websites to permit education-related sites while keeping the other restrictions active.

The exact labels can change as Microsoft updates Family Safety, but the child profile and Content filters are the relevant areas—not Edge’s retired Kids Mode settings.

Set up filtering in the Family Safety app

  1. Open the Microsoft Family Safety app.
  2. Select the child’s profile.
  3. Select Content filters.
  4. Turn on Only use allowed websites if you want an allowlist-only setup.
  5. Add the websites the child is allowed to visit, or configure the available blocked-site options.

Important limitations of Family Safety

It filters Edge, not every browser

Family Safety’s website and search filters work with Microsoft Edge. They do not automatically create a browser-wide web filter across Chrome, Firefox, or other browsers. If the child can install or open another browser, use Family Safety’s App and game filters to restrict those applications as well.

Use a standard child account

The child’s Windows account should not be an administrator account. Microsoft warns that Family Safety may not work properly when a child has administrator privileges, because the child may be able to change settings or bypass restrictions. Use a standard account and keep administrative credentials with the parent or organizer.

Check the signed-in account when filtering appears ineffective

Restrictions can appear not to work when the child is signed in with the wrong Microsoft account, is not signed in to Edge, or is not correctly connected to the family group. Check all three before changing the filter rules:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the child is listed in the organizer’s Microsoft family group.
  2. Confirm Windows is using the child’s account rather than a parent’s account.
  3. Open Edge’s profile menu and verify that the child’s Microsoft account is signed in.
  4. Make sure the child is using Edge, not an unrestricted browser.
  5. Review the child’s Content filters and test both a blocked site and an allowed site.

What happened to the old Kids Mode instructions?

Kids Mode was introduced as a simplified, child-oriented Edge environment. Its former workflow included choosing an age range such as 5–8 or 9–12, applying a child-friendly theme, limiting browsing to an allowlist, and requiring authentication to leave the mode. Those instructions describe the old product and should not be used as current setup guidance.

If the profile menu does not show Browse in Kids Mode, that normally means the installed Edge version no longer contains the deprecated feature. It does not mean that a hidden Settings toggle needs to be switched on.

What should replace Edge Kids Mode?

Use Microsoft Family Safety with the child’s Microsoft account. Configure Edge web and search filters, blocked or allowed sites, and—when needed—restrictions on other browsers through App and game filters.

Why can my child still browse an unrestricted site?

Check that the child is signed in to the correct Microsoft account in Edge, belongs to the family group, uses a standard Windows account, and is not using another browser. Family Safety web filtering applies to Edge, not automatically to every browser.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Edge Kids Mode cannot be enabled in current Microsoft Edge because Microsoft deprecated and removed the supported feature. Do not downgrade Edge or use old registry commands. Set up the child’s Microsoft account in Microsoft Family Safety, enable Edge content filters, and restrict other browsers separately if necessary.
